The crossover between jazz and country music was at its peak in the late 1930s with the rise of Western swing, which was essentially swinging jazz that utilized the instruments (and sometimes the melodies) of rural white America. However a decade earlier, a few vocalists who helped pioneer country music sometimes sang blues and used jazz musicians. This CD has eight numbers by Jimmie Rodgers (including "Blue Yodel No. 9" with Louis Armstrong), nine songs from Roy Evans (assisted along the way by pianist James P. Johnson, the Dorsey Brothers and Benny Goodman), and the final rare session by minstrel singer Emmett Miller from 1936. Although it can be a bit disconcerting to hear occasional yodels in these settings, the performances generally work quite well and certainly hold one's interest. ~ Scott Yanow

$10.05 Among the scariest movies ever put on celluloid, like its similarly styled sister, RINGU, this tale of death-by-curse is nothing short of blood chilling. With chapters named after each subsequent victim, it plays like a series of increasingly daunting, deadly vignettes. All of the stories surround a haunted house where the evil spirit of a 5-year-old boy still lurks. The first to enter the residence ...

Blue Yodelers: 1928-1936
$26.49 One of the all-time great guitarists, Chet Atkins had a formidable technique and an utterly individual style that influenced generations of successive axeslingers. Atkins's chops were well in place in the early years of his career, as this superb five-disc box set attests. Beginning in 1946, the year he made his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, THE EARLY YEARS traces the first decade of Atkins' solo work.

| | Touch My Heart: A Tribute To Johnny Paycheck CD (2004)
Blue Yodelers: 1928-1936
$14.79 Johnny Paycheck is best remembered as the likably ornery Nashville outlaw who scored a major crossover hit with David Allan Coe's "Take This Job and Shove it" and made the title a household phrase. Unfortunately, as is often the case, Paycheck's biggest hit also created a one-dimensional image that he was never able to escape, and did no justice to the full scope of his talent. Paycheck was a fine singer, a gifted songwriter, a respected journeyman musician who anchored road bands for George Jones and Porter Wagoner, and an artist whose work could be bitingly funny, heart-wrenching, intensely personal, or a little disturbing depending on which tune from which point of his career you chose to cue up. In short, the late Johnny Paycheck is a guy whose public profile could stand an overhaul, and thankfully ace songwriter and noted fan Robbie Fulks has been given the opportunity to ...

| | Umoya Tribal Beatz Of Africa CD (2006)
Blue Yodelers: 1928-1936
$22.09 Tribal Beatz of Africa is an album of ambient African music, if such a genre exists. The band Umoya is based around Barry Van Zyl, the drummer for Johnny Clegg, and Robin Hogarth, a world music producer with a fair amount of crossover success under his belt. The rest of the band is comprised largely of other members of Johnny Clegg's band, and in at least one instance, Clegg himself (on "Sihamba Nawe"). Despite this strong influence of musicians well versed in Zulu-related sounds, the focus of the album shifts uncontrollably from one regional beat and type to another. After ...
