After scoring the hit "Popular" off its successful 1996 debut record, HIGH/LOW, Nada Surf ran into the hardest of brick walls. While THE PROXIMITY EFFECT built on the fiery, jagged indie power pop of its predecessor, life after a novelty hit can be rough. Their major label, unsure how to market the record, decided not to release it, but also refused to relinquish the masters to the band. After years of dispute, the band could easily have retreated into cynicism and depression, and rumor has it that they did, to a degree. However, they also persevered, and ultimately bought the rights back and self-released the album.

It's a good thing they did, as THE PROXIMITY EFFECT is a delectable slice of indie rock. Opening track and single "Hyperspace" boasts the perfect singalong hook and the fevered guitar rock that dominated the first record. However, tracks like "Amateur" and "The Voices" uncover a band lost in thought, reflective, but ultimately upbeat. While the record was overlooked by most of radio and the public, it did catch the ear of college radio and then Barsuk Records, sowing the seeds of the band's unlikely revival.

5 stars :) :) :)
The best and most pure rock band from the last 10 year.... The new album 'Let go' is the best one to date!!

5 stars Not as "popular", but much better!
OK, I'm sure everyone and their dog bought "High/Low" so they could all have the "alterna-rock" smash hit "Popular" playing on their stereo, but there's so much more to Nada Surf than that. High/Low was a great album, but "The Proximity Effect" is so much better. Nada Surf are an amazing "power-pop" trio, with great songs and even better lyrics. They're a band that really engages the listener; it makes you think. It's one of my ten favorite albums of all time and Nada Surf are one of the best bands to come out of America in a long time. Highlights include Amateur, 80 Windows, Disposession, Firecracker...it's all great! Do you like Jimmy Eat World or "Pinkerton" by Weezer? Buy this...it's better!

4 stars Proximity Effect
Rather excellent, on the whole, though the first three tracks are clearly the most stellar. I still can't figure out what the fourth one is doing there, though. It not only goes nowhere, and is so pathetically preachy as to be laughable, but it is really at odds stylistically with much else. M'thinks that someone up there in 'sensitive guy-in-a-band'-land is taking themselves just a bit too seriously. I've seen this band in concert and found them extremely musical, easily as much so as the best stuff to be heard here. Why, then, they didn't pull off something as consistently compelling on this CD is a mystery to me.

5 stars Master-class.....
The Proximity Effect is the kind of album that cannot be faulted..Perhaps in a couple of songs namely Bacardi and Dispossession it suffers momentary lapses, the album manages to pull out 4 classics [most albums are normally hard-pushed to have 2 classics] - namely, the opening three tracks, Hyperspace, Amateur, and 80 windows, along with The Voices. The other songs are also stand outs shwoing Nada Surf to be meaningful, without being overly sensitive. I may indeed be 17 years of age, but thankfully, Nada Surf dont produce songs that 'kids' will be attracted to. As a percentage....Nada Surf get 98%.

A funny thing happened to Nada Surf on the way to sure-fire late-'90s alt-rock stardom. Despite obtaining a decent amount of MTV exposure, their sardonic first single, "Popular," ultimately arrived just moments too late to capitalize on the era's short-lived mainstream fancy with geek rock. And with no quality second hit in sight, neither 1996's moderately successful High/Low nor its forgettable 1998 follow-up, The Proximity Effect, gained much traction outside the indie ...

Keats Rides A Harley
Keats Rides A Harley CD  (2005)

Proximity Effect CD music
CD $13.05
Keats Rides a Harley was released as a nine-cut EP in 1981. Released on the legendary Urinals' own Happy Squid label, it contained debut recordings by a number of underground L.A.-based bands -- and one from outside. Some of them, like the Gun Club and the Meat Puppets from Phoenix left a real mark and influenced dozens of bands who came after them. Others left ghostly traces of their sounds elsewhere and had recording careers of varying lengths such as the Leaving Trains, 100 Flowers (a Urinals offshoot), Toxic Shock, and Human Hands. Still others, like S Squad, Tunneltones, and the Earwigs, all but disappeared into myth and folklore. In addition to the original EP Keats Rides a Harley (named after the goldfish of the Urinals drummer, not the poet), this CD contains nine bonus tracks, one by each band featured on the original Happy Squid label sampler. The Gun Club's contributions are early, raw, and utterly superior versions of "Preach the Blues" and "Devil in the Woods." The Meat Puppets' "H-Elenore" is here along with a previously unreleased early cover of Neil Young's "The Losing End," which hints at the direction that the band would go on their classic second album. The Tunneltones featured future Savage Republic boss Bruce Licher on guitar, and this early incarnation of the Leaving Trains had Sylvia Juncosa playing not guitar as she did on her SST debut but keyboards! In sum, this is an excellent document both historically and musically, from a magical time when anything went, because none of it mattered beyond the day anyway. For those who have only heard of the storied EP, here's your chance. ~ Thom Jurek In 1981 Happy Squid Records released what was to become a seminal compilation of underground bands from Southern California, with one soon-to-be-famous Phoenix, Arizona band crossing the border. KEATS RIDES A HARLEY documented the Los Angeles punk scene - but from a perspective that was decidedly non-Hollywood. Consider it the outsiders' take on the new underground happening at the time.

Twenty-four years later Warning Label Records presents KEATS for the first time on CD with newly-discovered bonus tracks from each artist from the original recording sessions. For the original sessions, Vitus Matare of The Last offered up his 4-track recording services and a classic was born. KEATS presented the first known recordings of bands such as Gun Club, The Leaving Trains, ...

The debut full-length by young quartet the Swellers is a decent but naggingly monochromatic slab of no-frills pop-punk. Sounding for all the world like a band with no influences that predate Green Day's Kerplunk, this fresh-faced Michigan foursome never deviates from its chosen path: one dozen brief, speedy slices of melodic punk tunes with clean vocals and catchy riffs, guaranteed to be lapped up ...
