| | Black Sabbath Master Of Reality CD Black Sabbath Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Digitally remastered British reissue with original cover art.
While other frontrunners of hard rock/metal like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple began dabbling in other musical forms (folk and string symphonies, respectively), Black Sabbath stuck close to its original direction and was rewarded with several of the most enduring rock releases of all time. Coming off the worldwide breakthrough of the band's 1971's landmark, PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY (released the same year) proved to be Sabbath's third classic in a row. Like all Sabbath albums of the era, not a second of filler is present--even the lesser-known material is superb.
The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is in fine voice on "After Forever" and "Lord of this World," while the more tranquil "Solitude" and the instrumental Iommi compositions "Embryo" and "Orchid" offer a bit of variety. Though not quite as influential as PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY remains one of heavy metal's founding gems.
1996 reissue on Castle of their top 10 1971 album for WarnerBrothers. Digitally remastered from the original mastertapes with the original cover art intact. Contains all eight original tracks, including 'Sweet Leaf', 'Into The Void', 'Lord Of This World' and 'Children Of The Grave'.Rolling Stone (1/20/00, p.59) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...the definitive studio relic of Sabbath's golden-hellfire era (1970-74)...Ozzy preached a gospel of light: dignity, redemption and, in the heaving stoner's hymn 'Sweet Leaf,' peace through weed..." Q (7/01, p.86) - Included in Q's "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time" - "...Malevolent....casting Black Sabbath as a Titanic-style house band on the eve of Armageddon, cranking it as the bomb drops..." | | Black Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath CD (1973) Import; Remastered
Master Of Reality CD music
$14.79 1974's SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is widely considered to be Black Sabbath's last true classic album. The musical experimentation that began on 1972's VOL. 4 was continued here, but this time it took the form of subtle synthesizer colorings (instead of VOL. 4's tranquil ballads). And whereas its predecessor didn't contain a true, instantly recognizable Sabbath anthem (save for "Snowblind"), SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH's title track resumed the quartet's penchant for penning heavy metal compositions that sounded like they were tailor made for being blasted in a huge arena.
While the title track is the album's best-known song, SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH proved to be another in a long line of 100% filler-free records from Ozzy and co. Highlights included the creepy "Who Are You?," plus the Tony Iommi riff-mongers "A National Acrobat," "Killing Yourself to Live," and "Sabra Cadabra," a song that Metallica would cover on its 1998 release GARAGE INC. You'll also find one of Sabbath's most haunting yet serene instrumentals, "Fluff," as well as the melodic album-closing rocker, "Spiral Architect." SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is quintessential heavy metal.
1996 reissue on Castle of their top 20 1974 album for WarnerBrothers. Digitally remastered from the original mastertapes with faithfully restored artwork, it contains alleight original tracks, including the title smash and'Killing Yourself To Live'.
Digitally remastered U.K. edition.

| | Dokken Beast From The East CD (1988)
Master Of Reality music CDs
$7.59 By the time Dokken's first live album, BEAST FROM THE EAST, hit the record store shelves in time for 1998's holiday season, the hard rocking L.A. quartet was no more. Tensions between guitarist George Lynch and singer Don Dokken had come to a head during the previous summer's MONSTERS OF ROCK tour (in which Dokken played alongside such rock big names as Van Halen, Scorpions, and Metallica), splitting the band asunder after nearly 10 years.
BEAST FROM THE EAST shows that Dokken had become quite a capable live act over the course of four studio albums. All the expected Dokken favorites are included here, as well as a previously unreleased studio track, "Walk Away." Standouts include the guitar solo showcase "Mr. Scary," as well as the melodic rockers "Dream Warriors," "Kiss of Death," "Into the Fire," "It's Not Love," "Alone Again," "Just Got Lucky," and "Breaking the Chains."
Principally recorded live in Japan.
| | Carter The Unstoppable Sex... Straw Donkey: The Singles CD (1995) (Import) United Kingdom
Master Of Reality songs
$13.15 Although it's a solid recapitulation, in order, of all of the singles Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine released through 1995's Worry Bomb, there's something kind of unsatisfying about Straw Donkey. Part of it is that the duo's singles were not necessarily its best songs (although the group's two highest points, "Sheriff Fatman" and "The Only Living Boy in New Cross," are both duly accounted for), but the real reason is that the joy of Carter's albums is in their utter relentlessness. Listening to 1992: The Love Album or 101 Damnations is, in the best possible sense, a mildly exhausting adventure, like a drunken evening out with your best mate who declaims at the top of his lungs with a wicked sense of humor and a caustic eye for pretension and mendacity in popular culture. There are flashes of that same keen wit all over Straw Donkey, but the totality of the albums is missed. This is a useful intro for the newcomer, but fans might feel slightly disappointed. ~ Stewart Mason
| | Swans Great Annihilator CD (1995)
Master Of Reality album
$12.79 THE GREAT ANNIHILATOR is often hailed by critics and audiences alike as Swans' most palatable and accessible album. On this release, multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira foregoes his more experimental and industrial tendencies in favor of easily digestible soundscapes and tracks that are, at times, downright catchy. Songs such as "Mind/Body/Light/Sound" even tread into dance territory. "My Buried Child" and "Warm" showcase the breathy female vocals of Gira's partner and collaborator, Jarboe, who nicely complements his deeply brooding, almost demonic drawl. Also of note here is Gira's assemblage of a strong crew of instrumentalists--including frequent collaborator Norman Westberg on guitar, Algis Kizys on bass, Clinton Steele on guitar, and Ted Parsons on drums.
Swans includes: M. Gira, Jarboe (vocals).
