Prior to signing with Buddah and recording SAFE AS MILK, Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band had a two single deal with A&M Records in 1965. THE LEGENDARY A&M SESSIONS assembles those two 45s along with a fifth song, the previously unreleased "Here I Am, I Always Am." Clearly indebted to blues and R&B artists such as Howlin' Wolf and Johnny "Guitar" Watson, this southern California band was not alone in their explorations--contemporaries included Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal's Rising Sons and Lowell George's Factory. Beefheart was soon to further personalize his approach, but these first recordings are an important look at his beginnings. By strange confluence, the sessions were produced by David Gates, later to find fame in the soft-rock band Bread.
Before Safe As Milk and prior to the San Francisco Dance Concert boom of 1966, Beefheart and his early Magic Band recorded several sides for the fledging A&M Records of Los Angeles. Legendary A&M Sessions album
$7.59 Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band: Captain Beefheart (vocals, harmonica, bass marimba); Ry Cooder (guitar, bass); Alex St. Clair Snouffer, Jeff Cotton (guitar); Jerry Handley (bass); John French (drums).
The genesis of the first Captain Beefheart album SAFE AS MILK is suitably shrouded in mystery, but the result is a collection of performances that meld blues, R&B, avant garde rock, and West Coast pop in a unique and heady mix that's like nothing else in the Captain's oeuvre. While subsequent outings would emphasize the full-on weirdness of Beefheart and his Magic Band, songs such as "Yellow Brick Road," "Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do" and "Abba Zabba," while not without their own sonic quirks, still sound fresh and accessible today.

That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional ...
