There was no reason why Cock Robin shouldn't have been as big as anyone else around at the time. This collection showed a band that was bright, bubbly, and buoyant. "Thought You Were on My Side" oozed all the charm of a band in the studio for the first time. But it was the moody -- and, to a degree, menacing -- "When Your Heart Is Weak" that delivered their only hit Stateside. Certainly, things were not what they seemed. Under the chic shine of Steve Hillage's production lay a group led by intellectual Peter Kingsbery (just read the sleeve notes: "This, our first album, is for those who've helped birth this backwards child"). However, they used enough humor in their poetic license to do well in Europe.
Outside America, the pristine quality of "The Promise You Made" proved massive in France, number one in Holland, and also scored in Germany, Portugal, and even (albeit lower down the chart) the U.K. Most of the record was bathed in a sea of summer sound. "Because It Keeps on Working" and "Born With Teeth" have an almost Meat Loaf epic album feel, though both weigh in at around four minutes. "Once We Might Have Known" is semi-Go West. There's also a Gloria Estefan homage titled "Just When You're Having Fun." "More Than Willing," like "Promise," is simply stunning, but the song remained an album cut. In addition to "Weak," the album possessed another darker moment in its concluder "A Little Innocence." ~ Kelvin Hayes

Purchase Cock Robin CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Freddie Mercury Barcelona CD (1988)
Cock Robin album
$11.99 This is a collection of Spanish and American songs by Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury and opera singer Montserrat Caballe.
With Barcelona, Queen singer Freddie Mercury realized his long-lived dream of performing with an opera singer; in this case, Montserrat Caballe. While it's certainly a treat for any fan of Mercury's to hear this album, it's a difficult record to recommend. Most fans of opera will probably find it far too simplistic and pop-based, while many rock fans are sure to find the record too classical. The first half of the album, however, is deserving of a spin for any open-minded listener. ...

| | Best Tango Album In The World, Ever! CDs (2003)
Cock Robin album
$12.39 The title of this television-advertised compilation may be arrogant, but then the tango is not a dance for the shy and retiring. Whether or not it is, as it claims, The Best Tango Album in the World, Ever!, the two-disc set, containing 30 tracks and running a little less than an hour and a half, does feature some major performers of the music, notably Carlos Gardel, renowned as the father of the tango, heard performing "Volver" and the concluding vocal version of "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," and Astor Piazzolla, who used the tango as a vehicle for composing modern classical music, heard performing "La Rayuela." Other notable performers include Carlos Garcia & His Orchestra, heard on four tracks, Sexteto ...

| | Lone Justice Shelter CD (1986)
Cock Robin music CDs
$8.79 Shelter finds Lone Justice abandoning the cowpunk image of their debut in favor of a more polished '80s sound. What they came up with is rather a mishmash of material that only points the way for Maria McKee to don a solo outfit and carry on alone. Shelter falls into the trap of a record company dictating how a disc should sound no matter what might happen to the group producing it. There are strong cuts here -- most notably, "I Found Love" (a real '80s-sounding product), "Wheels," and "Dixie Storms" (which foretells Maria McKee's future in music) all have something to recommend them. The rest falls into the trap of songs produced to fulfill obligations. Lone Justice was a group not unlike Big Brother & the Holding Company, ...
| | Danielson Famile Tri-Danielson, Vol. 1 (Alpha) CD (1998) Alpha
Cock Robin songs
$12.49 Beginning with the family's repeated chant of "Tri-Danielson," followed by a round of hooting and applause, the Danielson Famile's third LP is the one that sees them at their strongest. This is their brightest collection of songs so far, and it's definitely the album to start with. Beginning with "Southern Paws" -- a simple acoustic melody with Daniel Smith and harmonies courtesy of sisters Megan and Rachel -- it's apparent that the group has finally become comfortable enough to make the music they were on the verge of with 1997's Tell Another Joke at the Ol' Choppin' Block. "Rubbernecker" takes a sort of quirky, straight rhythm and punches it up with Wurlitzer effects and horns, while Daniel Smith sings about people with "hungry eyes," "homemade thighs," and "greasy talk." In the end, it sounds like nothing else and is certainly one of the tracks that will either endear you to or steer you away from the band. The carnival comparisons begin with this track, as do their ties to soul music. Near the end of the song, the band turns the track briefly into Don Covay's "Chain of Fools" and, oddly enough, it's convincing. Other songs add banjo amidst all the pianos, and acoustic guitars amid all the tinkling keyboards. Daniel finds poetry in his spiritual affirmations, crying out "nourishment will come from the many-breasted one" and "the ...
