MOXY is the self-titled 1975 debut of the Canadian hard-rock/metal giants.
Moxy was formed in 1974 by Buzz Shearman from the ashes of his previous act, Leigh Ashford. The same year the band was formed it was signed to Polydor records in Canada, mainly due to the popularity and success of Leigh Ashford and Buzz Shearman's reputation. The band's first album was recorded in California in only two weeks with co-producer Mark Smith, and as luck would have it, guitarist Tommy Bolin was recording next door. Bolin was so impressed with Moxy that he added some guitar work to the LP. After recording the album simply titled Moxy, the band headed back to Toronto and enlisted guitarist Buddy Caine to fill in the guitar parts that Bolin had added to the album. The debut album originally released in 1975 is a powerhouse of hard rock tunes; it was picked up by many radio stations in the U.S.A. and was a number one requested album in Texas. The success of the album lead to a contract with the Mercury Records label in the U.S. and a national distribution deal. This release by Unidisc Records is a straight reissue of the original Mercury/Polydor Records album at a budget price complete with original artwork, but unfortunately, it contains no bonus tracks. ~ Keith Pettipas

Loud 'N Proud Like a northern artic blast Moxy came out of Canada with a full head of steam and blew away many other hard rock acts. Other albums lost a little of that nervous edge the first release brings to the table. If you want the best then this, the first release, captures all the energy and imagination of MOXY. Buzz & Earl!! Moxy has to be one of those bands that I feel never got the props they deserve. Earl Johnson was and still is one of the best Rock guitarist of our time. Buzz Sherman the ultimate vocalist who died too young will always be heard in others trying to emulate his style. On This first lp guitar great Tommy Bolin does some work as a result of Earl Johnson missing some recording dates, but it is Earl that stands out on this lp. Earl is still out there with Moxy to this day and for you that didn't know here is a little known trivia. Before Buzz Sherman's death he was chose to take Bon Scott's place in AC/DC, if you listen to his voice you will understand why. Long live Moxy, and yeah buy this lp and start collecting them all. Moxy album
$9.69 Unquestionably the best offering from New York's Riot, Fire Down Under is considered by many to be an early-'80s metal classic. After two marginally successful LPs, 1977's Rock City and 1979's Narita, bandleader Mark Reale worked out all the kinks in Riot's membership and musical delivery, and the results are dramatic. The songs are tight and memorable, the guitars are flashy, and the production is aggressive and slick on this 1981 collection. The group's best and most recognizable tune, "Swords & Tequila," kicks off Fire Down Under with an astonishing power surge. Other standouts include the fast-paced title track, "Outlaw," and "Don't Bring Me Down." The intensity then lets up as some bland numbers ...

Moxy CD music
$9.05 This remastered edition of UFO's 1975 album FORCE IT contains "Let It Roll," "Mother Mary," Shoot Shoot," and more.
If UFO has one addition to rock's pantheon of classic albums, this is it. FORCE IT builds on its predecessor, PHENOMENON, by taking the band further away from their fuzzier, space-rocking early records. Guitarist Michael Schenker's playing has a new toughness and clarity that perfectly frames the more melodic, hook-oriented ...

Moxy music CDs
$15.25 The debut self-titled album released by Canadian rockers Moxy in 1975 became an instant hit for the band, especially in America. In an effort to cash in on that success, the band immediately recorded a follow-up in 1976 simply titled Moxy II. This time the album was recorded in Toronto with Jack Douglas producing. While not as strong musically as the debut, the album contained nine songs written by the band members and was almost a carbon copy of the previous effort except that there was no Tommy Bolin to help out. The album managed to produce a minor hit with the song "Take It or Leave It" and sold well because of strong live appearances and heavy promotion by the label. | | Moxy Riding High CD (1977) (Import) Canada
Moxy songs
$15.25 Ridin' High was the third album released by Canadian rock band Moxy. With the release of this album, it was becoming obvious that hard touring and a rigorous schedule were beginning to take their toll on the band, especially vocalist Buzz Shearman. Recorded in Toronto in 1977, Ridin' High once more contained all original hard rock material written by the bandmembers. Toward the late 70's, the music scene was changing, hard rock was beginning to falter, disco and light rock songs were dominating the radio airwaves, while new wave and punk were beginning to capture a large audience. While Moxy still had a strong fan base due mainly to the strength of the first and second albums, the band was beginning to loose some of its momentum. Beside the change in music trends, Buzz Shearman had developed vocal chord problems and found it hard to perform live. After the Ridin' High album was released, Shearman was forced to leave the band to nurse his illness, so the album wasn't backed by a live support. Shearman's replacement was Mike Rynoski (who would later go on to front Loverboy as Mike Reno), but the spark had gone; it seemed that Moxy had run its course and the fan base was slipping fast. The band was dropped from their American distribution company so the album was only released in Canada. It was the beginning of the end for Moxy. This release by Unidisc Records is a straight reissue of the original Mercury/ Polydor Records album at a budget price complete with original artwork but, unfortunately, it contains no bonus tracks. ...
| | Starz Violation CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Moxy album
$10.45 Starz' sophomore album, Violation, was quite similar to its predecessor. Jack Douglas was still the band's producer, and Starz continued to favor the type of slick, commercial hard rock that would be called pop-metal in the '80s and early '90s. This 1977 LP didn't establish Starz as major players in the pop-metal field; the New Yorkers did have a small following, although not a huge one. Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable record. It doesn't contain any pop-metal masterpieces like Kiss' "Shout It out Loud" or Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," but tracks like "Cherry Baby" and "Rock Six Times" are certainly decent. Most of the time, Starz vocalist Michael Lee Smith sings about the same things that Kiss and Sweet were singing about in the '70s; namely, all-night parties and wild young women in tight dresses. Starz's lyrics, as a rule, were meant to be fun, not profound, and while Violation didn't go down in history as one of pop-metal's all-time classics, it's worth hearing if you're a fan of the style. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
Moxy CD music
$13.55 Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback to the heavy metal, hard rock, and psychedelic rock of the late '60s and very early '70s. Black Sabbath's first few albums with Ozzy Osbourne are a strong influence, and the Swedish band's other inspirations include Jethro Tull, Cream, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and the great but underexposed Budgie. If one didn't know for sure that Firewood was a 2005 recording, it would be easy to assume that the disc was recorded around 1969 or 1970 -- even the production is totally retro. And while Witchcraft's melodic offerings aren't the least bit groundbreaking, they are enjoyable; this derivative outing won't win any awards for originality, although it leaves no doubt that these Swedes are good at what they do. Firewood isn't in a class with the best albums that Sabbath, Tull, and Hendrix had ...

| | Decapitated Winds Of Creation CD (2000)
Moxy songs
$14.05 In the dark, murky realm of death metal, perhaps no band is more worthy of taking hold Excalibur's hilt and leading the next charge down the mountain into fiery oblivion than Poland's Decapitated, and one need look no further for proof than on the band's 2000 debut, Winds of Creation. Much has been made of the band's supposed "tender" age (the average age of the members was around 18 when Winds of Creation was released), and in fact, early on, they were slighted from the respect they would have otherwise been due because of this; however, it must be remembered that a certain gruff-throated, engine-wristed young vocalist/guitarist for another certain popular metal band was only 18 when his band's debut, Kill 'Em All, was released, and needless to say, as is the case here, tender had nothing to do with it. Ironically, in the eyes of many metal fans, Winds of Creation is almost as much of an astonishingly groundbreaking album as Kill 'Em All was in its day. To begin with, the band has a seemingly effortless understanding and command of both their instruments and death metal's highly stylistic requirements. The mind-bendingly blistering technical virtuosity would be amazing in a group of older musicians, much less for a band of teenagers, and better yet, they refrain from slipping into the routine, over-the-top expediency so common in their genre; the guys in Decapitated truly seem committed to getting death metal out of its then current rut and taking it to another level. Plus, the songwriting is extremely solid; even in the first listen, songs such as the manically frenzied "Blessed" and the beautifully haunting "Dance Macabre" stand out and away from the strange dissonance of "The First Damned" and the call-and-response riffage of "Nine Steps." The band even found time to throw in a cover of Slayer's "Mandatory Suicide" that somehow seems better than the original. All in all, this is essential material for death metal fans and anyone curious about the possible future of the genre. Unfortunately, death metal doesn't have a high rate of success for winning over new fans from outside the gates of its own wayward domain; it's one of those things with no gray area that divides people in a furious way -- you either love it or hate it, and if you hate it, then ...

$8.65 This time around, however, Queensryche seems surprisingly content to stay largely within the confines of pop song structures, sometimes even employing melodies so catchy and rhythms so bouncy that they wouldn't be out of place on a Journey record. Make no mistake, though; TRIBE is no pop sell-out, but rather eminently listenable evidence of a gracefully aging group further refining its constantly evolving and steadfastly uncompromising sound.
On TRIBE, Queensryche's first proper album since 1999's Q2K, the band combines all of the disparate sonic ...
