Day the actress rose to fame on the merits of her voice. This collection validates this caveat, presenting her performing a variety of standards such as 'Singin' in the Rain', 'Stardust', 'I'm in the Mood for Love' & seventeen others.
The intention of this 20-track British compilation seemed to be to establish Doris Day as a singer of standards, since the selection eschewed her hits in favor of titles like "Stardust," "Singin' in the Rain," and the title song, as well as compositions by Fields and McHugh, the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, and Whiting and Donaldson. (There was a recording of her breakthrough hit with Les Brown, "Sentimental Journey," but it was not the hit version.) The point was well-made; relieved of the duty to be cute and coy on the kind of forgettable pop she usually recorded, Day responded, turning in smart interpretations of these much-performed tunes over spare arrangements. (Confusingly enough, 18 of the tracks found here are also featured, in different sequence, on the similarly titled 22-track British compilation Blue Skies: Doris Day at Her Best issued the same year on Castle Communications' Kaz label.) ~ William Ruhlmann

FLAVE… One could not find the words that perfectly describe the mentality of this Sagittarian artist, songwriter, and visionary. Her favorite slogan is "Don’t let the long hair fool you", and her attitude makes it clear- sheer determination, perseverance, and a bit of stubbornness aren’t enough to keep one focused in today’s music world for you must love what you do. It is this unlimited love for Hip Hop and music in general that separates FLAVE from the vast majority of so-called artists looking to get their fifteen minutes of fame from novelty music.
