Lake Placid Blues album
$11.65 EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman.
The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either ...

| | Tony Joe White Snakey CD (2002)
Lake Placid Blues music CDs
$14.69 Why Tony Joe White isn't spoken of in the same revered tones as J.J. Cale is a mystery as well as a crime. White invented a brand of greasy, funky, deeply soulful Louisiana bayou rock that's been quoted by everyone from the Neville Brothers and the Meters to Marvin Gaye to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to ZZ Top to Funkadelic to the Cramps to the Gun Club to the White Stripes. Mark Knopfler owes his entire guitar playing approach to White. OK, enough bitching. Snakey is the most aptly titled Tony Joe record in some time. Here that shadowy guitar style, with its serpentine leads and chunky, syncopated chords, catches a groove that is echoed by Little Troll Forrest's basslines punching through the pocket just ahead of Boom Boom Cohen's drumming. The songs -- whether it be "Feeling Snakey," with its screaming leads and soulfully regretful message about leaving the booze alone to uncoil the body and mind to boasting about how your woman knows how to make the crawfish boil, or the driving, fuzzed-out high-wire ...

| | Trembling Blue Stars Last Holy Writer CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Lake Placid Blues album
$15.25 Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. What makes a difference here is a boost in the overall energy level from unrelenting gloom to mostly sad, a slightly expanded sonic palette that makes room for field recordings and a wider range of drum sounds, and most importantly, some really good songs. Chief among them are the Beth Arzy-sung "Idyllwild" which, much like Helen Reddy on the last album, fairly bursts out of the speakers like sun through the clouds, "Darker, Colder, Slower," which has the kind dramatic shifts in ...

| | Steve Diggle Secret Public Years: Best Of 1981-1989 CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Lake Placid Blues songs
$15.75 The solo work of Steve Diggle, best known for his work with the Buzzcocks, is featured here on the compilation SECRET PUBLIC YEARS: BEST OF 1981-1989.
Here at last is a chance to peruse just how good Diggle was in the eight years Buzzcocks were broken up, before their reunion. Unfortunately, since these 21 tracks are presented chronologically, the unfamiliar or unconvinced might not be instantly converted. It's not that the first 13 tracks, from '81-'86, aren't of good quality -- they are. But it's the final eight songs that should have led-off here, in establishing Diggle as one of the most important and overlooked artists in all of Britain during the '80s, despite his impressive run as an original Buzzcock hit-tunesmith. Starting off with his two brilliant '87 singles "Pictures in My Mind" and "Last Train to Safety," and continuing on to '88's mouth-opening Exiles EP and the final '89 almost-as-good but not quite "Tomorrow's Sunset," you have the ultimate proof that a fully recommitted Diggle had regained his pen, gotten together a real band, and was putting together punkish mod-pop gems with ...
