Best Of Pretty Maids: Back To Back songs
$13.95 Anvil's first album, 1981's Hard 'n' Heavy, may also be their most unique, since it actually predated the band's adhesion (and key contributions) to the up-and-coming speed metal movement, beginning with their seminal sophomore outing, 1982's Metal on Metal. Instead, Hard 'n' Heavy is a transitional record compiling the best fruits of nearly a decade's worth of club shows and basement woodshedding over long cold Canadian winters by inseparable pals Steve "Lips" Kudlow (vocals/guitar) and Robb Reiner (drums), plus, more recently, bandmates Dave Allison (guitar) and Ian Dickson (bass). In fact, prior to its release through Attic Records, Hard 'n' Heavy had already been put out independently under the group's discarded moniker of Lips (where, curiously, their focus had been on S&M-inspired shock rock), so in some respects, it was the work of another band, not Anvil. This S&M connection certainly ...
| | Anvil Forged In Fire CD (1983)
Best Of Pretty Maids: Back To Back album
$13.95 The second of Anvil's two influential cult classics, FORGED IN FIRE essentially refines the blueprint laid out on METAL ON METAL, showing a band more firmly in control of its muse. Lips's vocal performance is more polished and varied, yet no less unhinged; the technical riffery of the uptempo numbers is even more challenging; and Robb Reiner delivers a jaw-dropping performance, pulling out his genre-changing double-bass-drum technique on nearly every song and never letting the record's momentum flag. Even with all the blistering intensity on display here, FORGED IN FIRE isn't the all-out assault of KILL 'EM ALL; Anvil lacked ...

| | TNT Knights Of The New Thunder CD (1984) Import
Best Of Pretty Maids: Back To Back music CDs
$13.95 The debut album from Norway's TNT is anchored by the charismatic pop-metal vocals of singer Tony Harnell (actually an American) and the high-tech fretwork of guitarist Ronnie Le Tekro. The record also benefits from excellent pacing and, for the most part, great tunes. As far as this kind of music goes, TNT does it far better than most of their contemporaries. ...
| | Alberta Hunter Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 4 (1927-46) CD (1996)
Best Of Pretty Maids: Back To Back songs
$14.05 This excellent compilation covers a good portion of singer Alberta Hunter's early career, bringing together recordings made between 1927 and 1946. Unlike the deeply textured sound that would typify the artist's later singing, Hunter's style on these early cuts can be characterized as smooth, ...
| | Marlene Verplanck Breath Of Fresh Air CD (1969)
Best Of Pretty Maids: Back To Back album
$11.79 A BREATH OF FRESH AIR contains 2 LPs on 1 CD from 1968 and 1969 and features jazz standards and '60s show tunes.
The jazz content of this CD reissue is pretty light as singer Marlene Ver Planck (who as usual displays a beautiful voice with a wide range) is backed by rather commercial arrangements on a repertoire dominated by then-current show and movie tunes that often sound quite dated today. She certainly does her best (as can be heard on wordless versions of "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Mission Impossible") but Ver Planck's later recordings are much more valuable from the jazz standpoint. ~ Scott Yanow
accompanied by a large orchestra with and without strings, arranged, conducted and produced by J. Billy ...
| | James Plotkin Atomsmasher CD (2001)
Best Of Pretty Maids: Back To Back CD music
$11.95 Blurring the lines between grindcore, experimental noise, and in-your-face electronica, James Plotkin's Atomsmasher's debut comes off like a cross between Atari Teenage Riot, Merzbow, Aphex Twin, Fantômas, and Torture Garden-era Naked City. In other words, it's wild, it's noisy, it's jarring, and it will leave most listeners ...
