| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
No. 0 music CDs
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a ...

$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
No. 0 album
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy ...

| | Steppin' Out: The Very Best Of Joe Jackson CDs (2001)
No. 0 album
$15.69 Recorded between 1979 & 1991. Includes liner notes by Scott Schnider.
In the late 1970s/early '80s, Joe Jackson was one of the quintessential "angry young men" of New Wave, who brought skinny ties and chip-on-shoulder sentiments to rock & roll with a surfeit of verve. Along with Elvis Costello and Graham Parker (and less-famous names like Tom Dickie and D.L. Byron), Jackson married the urgency of full-on rock & roll to the personal perspective and literary sensibility of the singer/songwriter, as documented on his definitive anthology, the double-disc STEPPIN' OUT: THE VERY BEST OF JOE JACKSON.
Matched only by Costello for mercurial eclecticism, Jackson successfully flitted from style to style throughout his career, even though he might have lost some of his core following along the way. One can easily discern his evolution over the course of this collection. The frenetic, punk-inflected "Got the Time" and "I'm the Man" give way to the jump blues of "Jumpin' Jive" and the grand piano balladry of "A Slow Song." Disc Two finds Jackson at his most satisfyingly expansive on such early-'80s cuts as "Another World" and the title tune. And if the latter-day songs meander slightly, it's just further evidence that Jackson was ever the artistic seeker, who never settled into a rut and never stopped looking for new modes of expression.
