Recording information: Puk Studios. Photographer: Herb Ritts. The past Elton John has in mind is the era of soul music of the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, and although all the songs are new, he recreates it well here. The album's most notable selection is the ballad "Sacrifice," which amazingly became his first-ever number one hit in the U.K. ~ William Ruhlmann SLEEPING WITH THE PAST finds Elton John finishing off the eighties with a mature, and above all, serious musical statement. Kicking off with the tropical groove and social message of "Durban Deep," the album moves straight into the anthemic "Healing Hands," with its larger-than-life chorus, inspiring lyric and stirring piano runs. The seamless teamwork of Elton and Bernie Taupin reaches a career high with the instant classic, "Sacrifice," a tender ballad which instantly took its rightful place among the pair's best work. This varied, solid work finishes out with the epic production number that is "Amazes Me" and the quiet build and slow burn of "Blue Avenue." The past Elton John has in mind is the era of soul music of the mid-'60s to the mid-'70s, and although all the songs are new, he re-creates the period well here. The album's most notable selection is the ballad "Sacrifice," which, amazingly, became his first-ever number-one hit in the U.K. [The Polygram International edition features two bonus tracks, "Dancing in the End Zone" and "Love is a Cannibal."] ~ William Ruhlmann

Sleeping With The Past
$36.69 Who could have predicted that his Back to Mine selection would include tracks from Kate Bush, Chet Baker or The Cure? His sleeve-notes explain all and give us a peek into the psyche of the man. About Dr. John he says ''This isn't music, it's magic''. This album is full of surprises and delights for inquisitive Tricky fans and any music fans who are after something different. The album even includes four exclusive tracks from Tricky's own label, Brown Punk Records. 16 tracks. DMC. 2003.
This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Tricky. This part of DMC's Back To Mine DJ series. DJ: Tricky. Predictably unpredictable and unnerving as all get-out to sit through, Tricky's contribution to the Back to Mine series still manages to be an absorbing listen, despite all of the slammed-together transitions and wild stylistic jumps from track to track. Tricky's picks continually flit from old favorites of his to new discoveries and projects -- several of which are given their first official airings. The disc begins as solidly and smartly as any other edition of Back to Mine, with smooth transitions within the first four disparate tracks. The Cure's eerie, string-laden "Lullaby" is successfully blended into the queasy sway of Radanna's "How We Wide," a street-oriented downtempo/gangsta hybrid featuring the compiler on the mike. This abruptly shifts into Eric B. & Rakim's "My Melody," which carries the melody from its predecessor for nearly two minutes. From there, the disc derails and gets back on track a number of times. Unsurprising appearances from Kate Bush ("Eat the Music"), Buzzcocks ("You Tear Me Up"), and Chet Baker ("My Funny Valentine") are broken up with more of Tricky's own projects and interests, including a pair of tracks from artists (Kat Cross, Costanza) ...
