Lynyrd Skynyrd One More from the Road CDs (1976) Top Seller
Live in Japan buy CD music Recorded live at the Fox Theater, Atlanta, Georgia in July 1976. Originally released on MCA (6001). Includes original liner notes by Cameron Crowe and reissue liner notes Ron O'Brien.
Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angles, California).
The '70s was the era of the live album--it seemed like just about every rock band used the format to bolster its career. But Lynyrd Skynyrd was already established as the premier Southern rock outfit by the time of its 1976 in-concert double album, ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD. What this release did was serve as proof that the non-stop touring the band had been indulging in since the dawn of the decade had made them an untouchable, rock-solid live act.
These renditions show that the band poured its heart and soul into its live set--the moving "Tuesday's Gone" is even more gut wrenching than its studio incarnation. "Saturday Night Special" is just as fierce, and "Sweet Home Alabama" takes on a party atmosphere, while the near 12-minute album closing "Free Bird" stretches to even more epic proportions than the studio version.

Recorded live at Leeds University, Leeds, England on February 14, 1970. Originally released on Decca (79175) in May 1970.
In addition to making some of the finest studio albums in rock history (ranging in approach from proto-pop-punk to the first rock operas), the Who, live, epitomized the brash, electrifying energy that put a new face on the music in the 1960s. The original LIVE AT LEEDS album, released in 1970, looked straight into the eye of this hurricane on a single disc featuring six tracks. A 1995 reissue doubled the number of songs. The DELUXE EDITION, however, released in 2001, is the first document to feature the Leeds concert in its entirety. Spread out over two discs, this most recent update is definitive, and includes a 28-page booklet, sections of band-audience banter, and--most importantly--a full performance of TOMMY. The sound, enhanced here in a new mix supervised by guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend, is crystalline, without losing any of the group's swirling chaos and bone-crushing sonic impact. Though the Who later began to abridge TOMMY live, disc two features the entire opera, while the first disc houses "Substitute," "My Generation," and a blood-pumping cover of "Summertime Blues," among other singles. For any Who fan, this edition is essential.

Talking Heads Name of This Band Is Talking Heads CDs (1982)
Live in Japan CD music This live album was originally released as a double LP in 1982, when the Talking Heads were still extremely active. Twenty-two years later, the bonus-laden, two-CD reissue serves as a fascinating in-concert document of the phases the band went through during its first five years. The late-'70s tracks on the first disc show the early version of the band in all its geeky glory, mixing spastic New Wave quirkiness, funk rhythms, and art-school lyrics. It's intriguing to hear the difference between some of the songs' inception and their eventual recorded versions, such as a relatively straightforward "Electricity (Drugs)," which would turn ominous and atmospheric on FEAR OF MUSIC.
The second disc captures the expanded, early-'80s version of the band, with extra musicians and backing vocalists in tow, tackling the fugue-like art-funk masterpieces of the aforementioned album and REMAIN IN LIGHT. It's all the more impressive to hear the interlocking of the guitars, keyboards, and percussion achieved without the benefit of studio overdubbing, and David Byrne's near-manic intensity is even more focused and affecting in the live setting. Even vinyl freaks/Heads maniacs who hung on to the original LP for two decades will need to get this, if only for the wealth of indispensable bonus tracks.
Formed in NYC in the mid-'70s by David Byrne, Chris Franz, Tina Weymouth, & ex-Modern Lover Jerry Harrison, Talking Heads soared out of their humble CBGB's beginnings to become Rock & Roll Hall of Famers & one of the most adventurous & influential bands ever. The onstage energy that propelled their rise to fame was documented in the 1982 double-LP set THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS, now available on CD for the first time. Following them through several early evolutions from '77-'81, this live gem - a 1982 Top 40 Billboard Album- is a riveting portrait of a stellar band on the rise. For its CD debut it's been expanded with over 30 minutes of rare & mostly previously unreleased bonus material.

Deep Purple in Rock CD (1970) Top Seller
Live in Japan songs British import edition, this includes nine bonus tracks, including remixes, unreleased instrumentals, and in-studio chatter.
With IN ROCK, Deep Purple added vocalist Ian Gillan into the line-up, a decision that irrevocably changed their fortunes. IN ROCK is one of the genre's definitive albums, combining hard-edged riffs with virtuoso technique, topped by Gillan's full-throated roar. Few singers could survive the instrumental power beneath him, but this he does with room to spare, reacting to and emphasizing his colleagues' musical prowess. Chock-full of material destined to become Deep Purple anthems, later releases were evaluated against this trail-blazing, heavy rock collection.

Ten Years After Live at the Fillmore East 1970 CDs (2001) Top Seller
Live in Japan album for sale This superbly recorded double disc (the original engineer was Eddie Kramer, best-known for his work with Hendrix) captured over a weekend worth of dates in February 1970 at the venerable New York City venue catches the Brit boogie quartet at the peak of their powers. These shows were sandwiched between their triumphant Woodstock set and the release of Cricklewood Green, generally considered the band's best work. They find the group primed through years of roadwork, as well as obviously excited to be playing in front of an appreciative N.Y.C. crowd. Kicking off with one of Bill Graham's patented individual-member intros, the group winds their way through the ominous riff of "Love Like a Man." Mixing extended and rocking versions of blues standards -- like Sonny Boy Williamson classics "Help Me" and "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl," as well as Willie Dixon's "Spoonful" -- with two Chuck Berry covers and some nuggets from their own catalog, Ten Years After burns through this show with enormous energy and infectious enthusiasm. Alvin Lee and his flying fingers stay firmly in the spotlight, but the remastered sound is so immaculate you can finally appreciate the contributions of the other, generally overlooked TYA members: Chick Churchill on keyboards and especially Leo Lyons' fluid bass work, along with Ric Lee's jazzy drums. The songs shift into overdrive on the jams -- the longest of which pushes "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" to 20 minutes -- and amazingly stay interesting for the majority of that time thanks to Lee's sense of flashy dynamics, as he quotes liberally from Hendrix and Cream licks. Detailed liner notes from drummer Lee describe the scene, not only in terms of Ten Years After, but also of the musical camaraderie of the time. Some of this is almost embarrassingly dated -- the drum solo-laden "The Hobbit" is particularly guilty, as are the often-interminable guitar gymnastics -- and the Chuck Berry numbers might have been live crowd-pleasers but don't add much to the originals. Still, this is the best Ten Years After concert album (of the three in the catalog), and proves just how vibrant these boogie boys could be when inspired by the crowd and each other on a perfect night. ~ Hal Horowitz

Knebworth 1985 CDs (1998)
Live in Japan CD music Deep Purple Mark II (Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore) reunited in the mid-'80s and staged a comeback with the album Perfect Strangers. This live two-CD set comes from the band's first show in England following the reunion. Besides the songs from Perfect Strangers, the band sticks to their Machine Head-era set list, except for an array of classical quotes and a brief tribute to Gillan's starring role on the original Jesus Christ Superstar album. The band isn't quite as together as they were in the glory days of Made in Japan, but the excitement of the day, and the outdoor show's rainy and muddy adversity, lend the playing a wild energy. Blackmore in particular flies around unpredictably and occasionally brilliantly. An enjoyable set. ~ Stephen Raiteri
