Throughout her career, most of Françoise Hardy's arrangements have tended toward the lush, though in a good way. La Question is lush too, but it's one of her most sparsely produced efforts, usually finding her voice accompanied by little more than an acoustic guitar, touches of bass, and very subtle orchestration. Much of the record's lights-low ambience could be attributed to Tuca (no last name given), who played guitar, co-arranged, and co-wrote most of the tunes (though Hardy did contribute to the composition of a few tracks). It may be her best post-'60s effort, songs like "Chanson d'O" and "Le Martien" featuring some of her most whispery, seductive vocals. As fireside romantic music goes, it beats the hell out of José Feliciano. ~ Richie Unterberger
CD reissue of the French Pop superstar's 1971 album, one of her finest and most distinctive efforts. Initially considered a departure from her more commercial hits from the '60s, La Question has become a virtual calling-card for Hardy and has proven to be extremely influential on the modern French Pop scene. Though sparse in it's execution, the album demands the listener's attention and offers more of it's secrets with each additional spin. Although she's had albums that were more successful, sales-wise, La Question continues to be embraced by new generations of music fans. 12 tracks including 'Chanson D'O' and 'Le Martien'. EMI.Magnet (p.118) - "LA QUESTION is Hardy's post-'60s high water mark, a surprisingly complex babymaker symphony of lights-down-low lullabies." La Question
$13.89 Francoise Hardy's ninth LP, "MA JEUNESSE FOUT LE CAMP," from 1967 posses a rich sadness typically emblematic of her tender folk pop. French import.
Hardy moved toward a more adult, sedate form of orchestrated pop balladry on this 1967 album. Nothing wrong with ...
| | Francoise Hardy Comment Te Dire Adieu CD (1968) France
La Question
$7.75 This may not rate as highly as her best mid-'60s recordings, which are less MOR-oriented. That stated, it's about as good as late-'60s MOR Continental pop gets, with tastefully imaginative orchestration, strong melodies, and sexy vocals. It's perhaps even sadder and more sentimental than was the norm for Francoise--she perpetually seems to be singing as though she's gazing out of a deserted chateau on a rainy afternoon. She largely forsakes original material here (although a couple cuts ...
| | Francoise Hardy Et Si Je M'En Vais Avant Toi CD (1972)
La Question
$11.65 This 1972 album from popular French singer and actress Francoise Hardy has a dozen tracks.
One of her weaker efforts, frequently characterized by a happy-go-lucky, pedestrian country-blues flavor. It's nice to know that she was keeping her ears open to outside influences. Yet we Yankees who love Francoise listen to her, at least in part, because of her oh-so-very French qualities. If you want to hear lame L.A.-style early '70s mellow rock, there are plenty of alternatives to turn to before you ...

| | Smokie Best Of CD (1997) (Import) Germany; Australia
La Question
$10.05 This greatest hits packages from Smokie features 18 cuts, including "Living Next Door To Alice," "Miss You," "Here Lies A Man," "Couldn't Live," and "Train Song."
In January of 1977, England's Smokie scored its first and only Top 40 hit on Billboard with the band's version of New World's "Living Next Door to Alice," a slick little pop/rock number that rode on the voice of lead singer Chris Norman. It's this song that kicks off The Best of Smokie, an all-you-need compilation made up of 18 tracks, including the band's version of Bobby Vee's "Take Good Care of My Baby" and a not-so-folksy rendition of "Mr. Tambourine Man." However, it's not the cover tunes that shine from this band by any means, but rather the songs that involve the songwriting prowess of Chinn and Chapman, which coincidentally marked the beginning of Smokie's short-lived run of success. With this duo penning the band's work, songs like "If You Think You Know How to Love Me" and "Don't Play Your Rock 'n' Roll to Me" gave Smokie ample recognition, easily surfacing as two of the group's best pop tunes. Cashing in on a Cliff Richard-like congeniality, sweetened rock efforts like "Oh Carol," "I'll Meet You at Midnight," and "For a Few Dollars More" represent Smokie's formulaic repertoire, which is why a compilation album such as this more than suffices. In 1979, Norman had a Top Ten hit with Suzi Quatro, teaming up for "Stumblin' In," which went all the way to number ...
| | Matt Pond PA I Thought You Were Sleeping CD (2001) Extended Play
La Question
$8.09 This five-song follow-up to the full-length Measure positions Matt Pond PA in a far more positive space than the band's previous outings -- there's a newfound optimism pervasive throughout the material, which spills out not only in its more direct lyrical themes but also in the performances, culminating in the furious ...
| | Quill Voodoo Caravan CD (2002)
La Question
$16.29 The Quill is a Swedish hard rock/metal act that combines the best of classic hard rock with alternative and metal. The group's influences come from across the spectrum, but some show up more obviously than others. First, it is easy to spot Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Give a listen to "Sell No Soul" for a quick example of those. They also chart into Led Zeppelin territory. Check out "(Wade Across) The Mighty River" and think Led Zeppelin III. All their influences are not so old-school, though. Indeed, tracks like "Until Earth Is Bitter Gone" showcase a Soundgarden sort of texture and "Overlord" screams Corrosion of Conformity. The group is being billed as "stoner rock," and it does exhibit healthy doses of that variant of the jam band sound, but that is certainly not the whole picture. The Hammond B-3 organ lends a great retro texture to this release, but much of the power and magic of the group comes from the incredible vocal talents of Magnus Ekvall, who really pulls it all together with style. It is not often that a band of this genre is elevated to greatness by the singing (Judas Priest comes to mind), but that is definitely the case with this one. The album shows a versatility and mastery ...
| | Rough Guide To Nigeria & Ghana CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
La Question
$14.69 It might be more apt to call this a guide to some of the musical styles of Nigeria and Ghana. While both highlife and juju are well represented, with the less conspicuous, very percussive Fuji genre evident in the track by Adewale Ayuba, something's missing -- Afro-beat. One can only assume the label couldn't license any tracks by Fela Kuti or his son, Femi; ...
