(4 Customer Reviews)
Wendy & Lisa fell victim to the sophomore jinx on the follow-up to their promising self-titled debut. On this album, the duo decided to incorporate dance-club beats and synthesizers into their music. The results were mixed. Though the album sounds more lively and slick than the debut, Wendy & Lisa came up short in the songwriting department. None of the album's ten tracks are anywhere near as memorable as the debut's "Waterfalls." The beats also sometimes hamper whatever emotional depth Wendy & Lisa are attempting to convey, especially on "Someday I," which has a strangely upbeat sound for a song with rather downbeat lyrics. The title cut is similarly ill-conceived, with a dance club arrangement that is meant to be exuberant, but instead comes off as a bit shrill. Lyrically, there isn't as much depth, either; most of the tracks are simple love songs. There isn't anything truly unlistenable here-Wendy & Lisa remain gifted musicians-but there also isn't anything outstanding either. For simple musical pleasures, Fruit at the Bottom will suffice, but the debut album remains a far wiser purchase. ~ Victor W. Valdivia
Import only pressing of the former Prince prot‚g‚'s 1989 album, currently out-of-print in the U.S. This is what many call Wendy and Lisa's "funk" album. After working with Prince it was pretty much inevitable that Wendy and Lisa would make an album like Fruit At the Bottom. It's funky, it's clever, and it's fun. EMI.
FRUIT AT THE BOTTOM, the 1989 album from Wendy & Lisa, features "Everyday" and "Always In My Dreams."
Personnel: Wendy Melvoin (guitar), Lisa Coleman (keyboards, drums); Carla Azar (drums).

ALTERNO-FUNK-ROCK Well ahead of its time, these girls are genious (and fine also),excellent musicianship, flows very well throughout....5 *'s from me !!! Submitted by Rolo-13 ("Houston, TX, USA") Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Caught You Sleepin' Even though this album came out in 1989 (I was still in junior high), it is a timeless collection of funk well worth repetitive listens. Wendy and Lisa (along with their band) are amazing musicians and song writers, and each of their "solo" albums reaches new heights in genre-bending. These women do it all, and they do it all exceedingly well. Prince fan or not, love these artists on their own merits, as they are unto themselves, in a word...BRILLIANT. | | Ice Cube Death Certificate CD (1991) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Fruit At The Bottom songs
$11.39 Once a member of N.W.A., Ice Cube has consistently put out hits and, throughout his music and film career, has remained admired by the hip-hop community. Rough and rugged, but true and to the point, only Ice Cube can address certain issues facing black, urban America, and he does just that on DEATH CERTIFICATE.
DEATH CERTIFICATE is co-produced by Ice Cube with the help of The Boogie Men and Sir Jinx, and the beats they come up with are hard, funky and fast, resembling Cube's own energy. George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" is revived through "My Summer Vacation" and, along with Cube's threatening lyrics, gives the track a funky, gangsta-party appeal. Ice Cube sums up his values and way of life on the single, "Steady Mobbin'": "Bustin' caps in the mix/Rather be judged by twelve than carried by six." "Look Who's Burnin'" is a story on the results of sexually-transmitted diseases; and though the lyrics are harsh, the song relays a positive message of the need to practice safe sex. In "True To The Game," Ice Cube lets all ...
| | Ice Cube Lethal Injection CD (1993) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Fruit At The Bottom album
$9.99 In 1993, Ice Cube released his third solo album, LETHAL INJECTION. By this time, the dominance of the West Coast rap scene had started to fade, as East Coast hip-hop artists like the Wu Tang Clan and the Notorious B.I.G. started to pull listeners away from the left coast. Hanging tough, Ice Cube released another masterful performance with LETHAL INJECTION. Tracks like "You Know How We Do It" and "Ghetto Bird" are deep-rooted in the classic West Coast sound and bounce. Filled with funk and smooth synth pads, LETHAL INJECTION is an album sometimes overlooked in the lengthy career of Ice Cube. Check out "Bop Gun (One Nation)," on which funk master George Clinton himself makes an appearance. Some of the album's ...

| | Change Is Gonna Come: The Voice Of Black America 1963-1973 CD (2007)
Fruit At The Bottom music CDs
$13.69 A companion piece to Kent's two volumes of Vietnam War-related soul, "A Change Is Gonna Come" is an audio documentation of how it felt to be black and American in the 1960s. 23 exceptional tracks, covering everything from interracial relationships to pov
The civil rights movement had enormous repercussions felt at every level of society, including popular music. Change Is Gonna Come: The Voice of Black America 1963-1973 collects 23 statements of African-American pride from the era, largely by soul artists, though even the tracks by the more jazz-oriented performers represented here bear a heavy soul influence. None of these cuts were massive pop hits, though the Impressions' "We're a Winner," James Brown's "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing (Open the Door I'll Get It Myself)," Nina Simone's "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," and Gil Scott-Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" are certainly well remembered. Even stars like the Staple Singers, Otis Redding, the Drifters, the Spinners, Parliament, the Chi-Lites, and the Temptations are represented by pretty uncelebrated efforts, and a good number of tracks are by artists known mostly to soul buffs. But unlike some compilations that largely eschew well-known cuts in favor of more obscure items, the quality is uniformly high, and the cross section of takes on black pride and protest intriguingly wide and eclectic. There's a moving lamentation about barriers to interracial relationships on Patrice Holloway's "Stay with Your Own Kind"; a witty jazz take on the legacy of slavery on Oscar Brown, Jr.'s "Forty Acres and a Mule"; haunting uptown soul-jazz fusion on Lou Gossett, Paul ...

| | Mathias Grassow Calibration CD (2009)
Fruit At The Bottom album
$17.69 Mathias Grassow was born in Wiesbaden Germany in 1963. From the start, music has always been a deep passion. He played drums and guitar in the 70's and moved on to keyboards in the early 80's. Mathias became increasingly fascinated with the flexibility and possibility inherent in keyboards and electronics and created experimental electronic music between traditional German and 'New Age' styles. Since the late 80's he has specialized in synthesizer drones and myriad forms of overtone music and explored their effect on the human psyche (similar to the old Indian Nada yoga) by using his voice, tambouras, zithers, flutes, guitars, singing ...
