This collection of salsa from Colombia is something of a crossroads of the genre, where the Atlantic and Pacific influences are each given their due in the cities of Cali and Barranquilla. The album is entirely compiled from the archives of Discos Fuentes, perhaps the most notable record label in existence for Colombian salsa. That said, the compiler took some liberties in what was deemed "Colombian" as a couple of tracks from Panama and Venezuela creep in quietly, still in the Colombian style, but hailing from elsewhere. In essence, the foundations for salsa are the same in both cities of importance, but the additional influences differ. In "Barranquillero," the sound is informed by the 1970s New York movement, with horns taking a prominent role throughout. While Cliff Carlisle is often mentioned in the same breath as Jimmie Rodgers (both men were 'blue' yodelers), when it came to the type of material they recorded there were differences. Like another early artist, Jimmie Davis, Carlisle was not averse to using risque material, songs that Rodgers and his management would not have considered suitable. Thus, although Carlisle and Rodgers both included railroad numbers, songs about gambling and drinking in their respective repertoires, Carlisle was quite prepared to embrace songs with elements of sexual innuendo along with humorous numbers despairing of marriage. Cliff Carlisle's recording career commenced in 1930 and he continued to record prolifically through the '30s, initially with Wilbur Ball and then later his brother Bill Carlisle. After the Second World War he appeared and recorded with The Carlisles.
These recordings show Cliff Carlisle to be more or less a contemporary of the great Jimmie Rodgers, albeit a far more obscure one.
