The new wave of British heavy metal that dawned along with the 1980s yielded heavier and more popular bands than Saxon (Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, to name just two), but anyone who listens to their second album, WHEELS OF STEEL, will recognize the origins of what came to be the dominant style of FM radio metal for over a decade. Combining the muscle of Black Sabbath with the nimble, twisting two-guitar attack of Thin Lizzy, Saxon helped create the template for British "power metal." Its driving rhythms and wailing theatrical vocals may have eventually become the norm, but in 1980 WHEELS OF STEEL was a shiny chrome beast of an album, and without precedent. Songs such as "Motorcycle Man" and "Freeway Mad" are the soundtrack for outlaw biker parties on both sides of the pond, and "Suzie Hold On" is a perfect hard-rock love song, tough and tender in equal measure.
Their 1980 release "Wheels Of Steel" was a huge success and considered career-defining by fans and critics alike. From the fantastic opening track "Motorcycle Man," the album pounds through 9 tracks including the 8-minute title track and classic ballad "Suzie Hold On."Kerrang (Magazine) (p.54) - "[A] classic in every sense....'Motorcycle Man' and 'Machine Gun''s quickfire power stood alongside the dramatic and strangely emotional 747..." The British Heavy Metal Band's Stunning 2nd Release! Britiain's Saxon were part of the late seventies/early eighties "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal" (MWOBHM) movement that produced such groups as Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Angelwitch, Diamond Head, Sweet Savage, White Spirit, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Trespass etc.! "Wheels Of Steel" is actually the band's first full length album (1979's self titled "Saxon" was considered an E.P. consisting of eight songs) and what a great one it is. The hits "747 (Strangers In The Night)" and "Motorcycle Man" are included but other songs such as the title track "Wheels Of Steel", "Suzy Hold On", "Stand Up And Be Counted" and "Freeway Mad" are almost equally as good. Fronted by a powerful singer named Biff Byford and twin lead guitarists in Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver, the band put most bands to shame during concerts. Unfortunately, Saxon never achieved the success in the U.S. that bands such as Def Leppard or Iron Maiden did which is a shame because this band was (and still is) as good as any of them. Even today the band continues to release excellent material (good examples are 2004's "Lionheart", 2001's "Killing Ground" and 1997's "Unleash The Beast"). Also, check out Saxon's earlier albums "Denim And Leather" (1981), "Strong Arm Of The Law" (1982), "The Power And The Glory" (1983) and "Crusader" (1984). I highly recommend them all. The best year in metal! 1980 was by far and away the best year for metal. AC/DC's Back In Black, Saxon's Wheels Of Steel, Judas Priest's British Steel. Iron Maiden's debut, etc.
This album is a piece of metal history, if you liked the 80's music scene, you MUST buy this album! Submitted by Brian (Oneida, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Purchase Wheels Of Steel CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Riot Fire Down Under CD (1981) Reissue
Wheels Of Steel
$9.69 Unquestionably the best offering from New York's Riot, Fire Down Under is considered by many to be an early-'80s metal classic. After two marginally successful LPs, 1977's Rock City and 1979's Narita, bandleader Mark Reale worked out all the kinks in Riot's membership and musical delivery, and the results are dramatic. The songs are tight and memorable, the guitars are flashy, and the production is aggressive and slick on this 1981 collection. The group's best and most recognizable ...
| | Black Sabbath Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath CD (1973)
Wheels Of Steel
$8.65 While the title track is the album's best-known song, SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH proved to be another in a long line of 100% filler-free records from Ozzy and co. Highlights included the creepy "Who Are You?," plus the Tony Iommi riff-mongers "A National Acrobat," "Killing Yourself to Live," and "Sabra Cadabra," a song that Metallica would cover on its 1998 release GARAGE INC. You'll also find one of Sabbath's most haunting yet serene instrumentals, "Fluff," as well as the melodic album-closing rocker, "Spiral Architect." SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH ...
| | Saxon Power & The Glory CD (1983) Remastered
Wheels Of Steel
$10.09 POWER & THE GLORY is a 1983 album by the British heavy metal band Saxon.
After their first significant hiatus, the members of Saxon (including new drummer Nigel Glockler) returned to the studio to work on Power & the Glory, an album which sounds like it was recorded in a tin can, albeit a very large one. The title track shows some promise, but it's all downhill from there, culminating ...
| | Saxon Crusader CD (1984) Germany
Wheels Of Steel
$9.99 Heavy Metal rockers from the U.K., Saxon, present CRUSADER, featuring 10 tracks on this German import release.
It's hard to pinpoint the reasons for Saxon's gradual fall from stardom, but by the time they released 1984's Crusader, the band had obviously stopped leading the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with its aggressive biker anthems, and fallen in line behind Iron Maiden's epic historical themes and more complex song structures. It did them no good. Crusader was actually a slight improvement from ...

| | Saxon Strong Arm Of The Law CD (1980) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; United Kingdom; +5 Bonus Tracks
Wheels Of Steel
$9.89 STRONG ARM OF THE LAW has always been a favorite among Saxon fans. With its driving Deep Purple-ish aggression and Thin Lizzy swagger, the band wades through each track with rocking fury. Originally released in 1980, not only did STRONG ARM OF THE LAW serve as an influence for budding European metal bands, but its gritty confidence and fist-thrusting anthems can be heard in many L.A.-based metal bands throughout the '80s.
A mere six months after releasing their stunning sophomore album, Wheels of Steel, Saxon managed to top themselves with Strong Arm of the Law. All the ingredients fell into place with this record, and though it lacked the obvious hits of its predecessor, its greater consistency from start to finish marks it as the band's definitive work for most fans and critics. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find any New Wave of British Heavy Metal Top Ten that doesn't include both these albums. Opening in bombastic fashion with the embryonic thrashing of "Heavy Metal Thunder," side one races by at breakneck speed with "To Hell and Back Again" and "Taking Your Chances," and only slackens the pace somewhat for the ever-popular title track, based on the bandmembers' true-life experience of being pulled over during their first American tour. The band had spent much of the precious ...

| | Remembering White Lion: Greatest Hits CD (2005)
Wheels Of Steel
$10.05 Sadly, Ultimate White Lion is neither ultimate nor White Lion. In fact, there are no other members of White Lion to be found on this disc; a notion further reinforced by the three photos of lead singer Mike Tramp gracing the inside and outside of the CD sleeve and the names of European session musicians in the credits. To make matters worse, these are actually re-recordings of White Lion's greatest moments and they are nowhere close to the brilliance of their original renditions. A painful seven-minute, slowed-down version of "Wait" is the most unforgivable offense; followed closely by the horrific butchering of "Little Fighter" and "When the Children Cry," which now finds itself backed by a children's choir. All of the hits and then some are re-recorded here, and that is fine for those who are looking ...
