FROM LUXURY TO HEARTACHE is a 13-track release by U.K. pop quartet Culture Club, featuring "Move Away," "I Pray," and "Gusto Blusto."
For their fourth album, From Luxury to Heartache, Culture Club jettisoned producer Steve Levine in favor of pop/R&B veteran Arif Mardin, seeking to reverse the commercial decline they had suffered with their third album. When the danceable leadoff track, "Move Away," rose into the singles chart, that seemed like a good decision, and the rest of the album followed through with a pronounced drum sound and a relentless beat. The group's flamboyance was played down in an attempt to redefine Culture Club as dancefloor favorites. But previously the group had enjoyed a broad-based pop appeal, and by focusing on one part of their constituency, they ultimately sacrificed the rest. What's more, to make this kind of music, you didn't need a group; all you needed was a lead singer and some synthesizers. No wonder Boy George went solo before the year was out. ~ William Ruhlmann

Missed Opportunity It was a shame that the band was going through so much turmoil at the time, because this album could have put them back at the top. It was great. The style & production was better than the last LP, and they even foreshadowed the "disco sound" that soon would take hold. However, with Boy George's drug & emotional troubles, the album was not as polished as it could've been AND there was no promotional push from the band (unless you count that appearance on the A-Team!). It trule was a Missed Opportunity. Submitted by Ren (Freeport, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A massive change to Culture Club's sound. I loved this album it was fantastic to see the boys come back with something different. A much more american sound with lots of influence from synth act's stateside. The songs were much stronger than (waking up with the house on fire)production was much better. This for me was one of Culture Club's best and a must have to any Boy George fan. Submitted by Polburnett (Edinburgh, Scotland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

a sad departure...... This particular album is one of those that suffered at the time of release, then sounded better as time went by. I was always loyal to the Culture Club sound, but even I could hear the strain of the groups' issues and how quickly they were to unravel. I was deeply saddened at their break-up. But nevertheless, I always found something interesting about this release (although i thought Gusto Blusto was a ridiculous effort!!) I give them four stars anyway because Culture Club was so unique in the music industry and still is! Submitted by fRed (NiagaraFalls) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$22.25 If ever something could be called a labor of love, Jungle Records' Born Too Loose is probably it. Delving into New York's back alleys, this two-disc set collects many of Johnny Thunders' finest moments. Given Thunders' legendary penchant for sloppy, unfocused performances (both live and in the studio), this is no mean feat. The collection spotlights the guitarist's post-New York Dolls career, compiling a healthy 39 tracks of studio and unreleased live material. Disc One contains studio recordings drawn mostly from the Jungle catalog. The first three tracks -- "Born to Lose," "Chinese Rocks," and "It's Not Enough" -- are taken from the L.A.M.F. Lost Mixes album, and are tight, nervy examples of the Heartbreakers' three-chord bloodbath. The disc continues with material from the solo albums Hurt Me, Que Sera Sera, In Cold Blood, and the excellent 1988 collaboration with Patti Palladin, Copy Cats. "Crawfish" and the greasy gutter anthem "Little Bit of Whore" are particular highlights, showing that in Thunders' streetwise hands, R&B could be thrown to the ground, spit on, kicked in the head a couple of times, and still come out of it better for the beating. The first disc ends on a poignant note with a live version of "Society Makes Me Sad." Recorded shortly before Thunders died in 1991, the song illustrates the ex-Doll's thoughtful, introspective ...
