Robert Smith and the boys are in fine form on this 1984 release which features eight tracks including "Let's Go To Bed," "Upstairs Room," "Walk," "Speak My Language," and "Lovecats."
After the fallout both psychologically and physically of Pornography, it looked unlikely that anyone would hear from the Cure ever again. Surprisingly, from 1982-1983 Robert Smith and (now keyboardist) Lol Tolhurst put out some of the catchiest singles of their career. "Let's Go to Bed," "The Walk," and "The Lovecats" were not only singles that got the Cure radio play and made them a household name, but more importantly marked the next phase in the music of the Cure, which would reach its peak with albums like Head on the Door and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Dropping the stripped-down darkness of Faith and Pornography, the songs on Japanese Whispers (the aforementioned singles from that era, including all the B-sides) are light, dancy, and at times jazzy. Adding new keyboard sounds, old-timey percussion, standup bass, and some damn silly lyrics rejuvenated Robert Smith and sent him on a course that would cement his role as one of the most interesting musicians to emerge from the '80s underground. Japanese Whispers is one of those rare releases when a singles collection works just as well as a standard-issue album. ~ Chris True

This is a really good Cure album for anyone who likes The Cure or just wants to choose an album. While the length is short the songs are right. Highly recomend to all.

 My thoughts!
Being a Cure fan and having an understanding of what The Cure means to me, my favorites on Japenese Whispers has to be Lament, Just One Kiss, and The Upstairs Room...to me, these are the songs on the album that are truly, "The Cure." And what I mean by that is this, The Cure, (Robert Smith) knows exactly how to make a song that feels dreamy and takes one to a place where you can get lost...and for most of us Cure fans it's a darker place where we can relate to the hurt that Robert so often writes of. The happy-go-lucky songs The Cure have written I love as well, but the slower, darker, and deeper songs, (meaning wise) are the songs that to me are, and why I love the Band! All in all it's a good shorter album.

Change isn't always bad.
This is such a good album; it's so different, very "un-Cure" as most Cure fans would say. Basically every song could have been a single. But the stronger tracks on this album (I think) are, "Lament", "Lovecats" and "Lets Go To Bed". This album isn’t going to disappoint you.

Timing is everything in pop music, and Marilyn Manson hit a zeitgeist in the mid-'90s with Antichrist Superstar, riding the post-alternative wave to the top of the charts with his dark, arty, industrial metal. Marbles is Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo's solo project, and Expo marks the first full-length album since Schneider mothballed the name with the formation of the Apples in 1993. The m.o. is very Apples-like, with loads of their trademark catchy melodies, slightly trippy lyrics, swirling guitars, and sonic textures. But instead of the usual '60s psych-pop influences and song structures, ELO seems to be the major influence at work, with tracks like "When You Open" and the pulsating "Magic" sounding like an unlikely lo-fi Jeff Lynne project. The record is filled with vocoders, electronically treated vocals, cheap drum machines, tinny synths, and robotic beats.
