Recorded live at the Roundabout Theatre, New York City on January 22-25, 1986.
On his previous couple of albums, Jackson had tried on various styles, inhabiting one or two for the length of a record, or at least for a few songs. On BIG WORLD, he brings all his influences together for a constantly shifting amalgam of textures and styles. After the relative excess of BODY AND SOUL, the band on BIG WORLD was scaled down to bass-guitar-drums and Joe, just like the old days. To underline the excitement generated by small-band interaction the album was recorded live to two-track.
BIG WORLD was initially released as a three-sided double LP, and the tracks touch on everything from Ennio Morricone spaghetti Western motifs ("Wild West") and tango ("Tango Atlantico") to Steely Dan-ish jazzy pop ("Soul Kiss") and dewy piano balladry ("Shanghai Sky"). Ultimately though, the emphasis is on the energetic, hooky pop/rock that is Jackson's strong suit. BIG WORLD also marks a return to the biting sarcasm and social commentary of his early albums, making it an appealing return to (lyrical) form.
Originally released in 1986, It contains all 15 tracks from the 60 minute release. A top 40 album in the U.S., it includes 'Right And Wrong', 'Wild West', 'Soul Kiss' and '(It's A) Big World'. Universal. 1989.

Big World Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars)   Joe Jackson Transcends Pop with Big World
In a beautiful, cohesive set, veteran songwriter/musician Joe Jackson takes us on a vivid aural journey around the globe. Although his lyrics are filled with moral and ethical insights, he is never preachy or heavy-handed and his observations remain relevant in this century as well as the one in which they were penned. I wonder if he has changed his lyric "Forty Years" to "Sixty Years" in order to keep it current, but other than that reference to WWII the sentiments are surprisingly fresh. The centerpiece for me is the call to self-evaluation of the song "Right and Wrong". The album is worth the purchase price for this tune alone, but the 15 tracks as a whole comprise one of modern music's finest pop/rock suites. Get it and make the journey with Joe and company--you'll be glad you became well-travelled in this Big World.

 Hard-to-Find Big World among Jackson's best...
Perhaps my feelings for this album are tinged by nostalgia: at age sixteen in 1986, I was discovering a whole world of music I had never before been exposed to, and Joe Jackson's smart rock rhythms of the early 80's were among my favorites. From his earliest albums, such as the spare, frequently angry tracks off of Look Sharp! and I'm the Man, to the orchestral nuances of Body and Soul and Blaze of Glory, Jackson managed to craft some of the most intelligent and unapologetically sophisticated pop-rock of the times, without sacrificing his musical ambitions to the emerging world of techno-video and single-driven radio.
Big World has been unavailable in the states for several years now; but the ability to import this long-unrecognized gem on CD is well-worth the search. A nicely themed album, featuring the hits Right and Wrong (a sneeringly sarcastic political expose) and Hometown (a wistful, jaunty memorial to everyone's roots), it also includes a great initial track (Wild West), the hauntingly beautiful Forty Years, and the swinging We Can't Stay Together. Mixing musical genres and styles has always been a hallmark of Jackson's more mature work, and this album, though lacking such stand-out tracks as the earlier Stepping Out or You Can't Get What You Want (perhaps his two best-known hits), is thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. No die-hard fan should lack this album, and it is an accessible start for those seeking to discover Joe Jackson for the first time.

Jackson wasted little time following up his successful '79 debut. I'M THE MAN was released later that same year. Perhaps consequently, the overall sonic approach is much the same. Unerringly tuneful pop-rock (once upon a time they called it "New Wave") delivered with plenty of British attitude over spare but energetic guitar-bass-drums backing. As a songwriter, Jackson developed a bit more here. Musically, "Amateur Hour" and the transcendent "It's Different For Girls" cover new balladic ground. He burst onto the scene a couple of years later than Elvis Costello and Graham Parker, but Joe Jackson completed British rock's Angry Young Man trinity. As evidenced by his '79 debut, Jackson was a bit more eclectic than Parker or (early) Costello, and a touch ahead of both in terms of harmonic sophistication (though he downplayed his compositional chops at the beginning). The straight-ahead guitar-bass-drums trio that backed him on his first three albums was inspired by punk, but clearly more a part of the burgeoning new wave scene, marrying punk's aggression with smart, hooky pop song structures.

By the time the Yardbirds recorded ROGER THE ENGINEER in 1966, the British Invasion was in full swing. Like their brethren, they targeted Chicago blues as ground zero for musical inspiration.
