Traffic's last album before their 1974 split, WHEN THE EAGLE FLIES takes the jazz-rock textures of THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS and SHOOT OUT AT THE FANTASY FACTORY to a logical conclusion. The songs here are more tightly structured than they had been on previous records, with only three of the seven tracks creeping over the six-minute mark. However, the band's interplay is more rhythmically loose than ever before.
It's not surprising that bassist Rosko Gee and percussionist Reebop Kwaku Baah went on to join German art-rockers Can. In fact, the 11-minute workout "Dream Gerrard," with its fluid groove, surreal lyrics, Chris Wood's lyrical saxophone interjections, and Steve Winwood's idiosyncratic sound-over-meaning vocal style, would fit quite nicely on one of Can's albums from this period. Elsewhere, more concise R&B-influenced tunes ("Something New" and "Walking in the Wind") foreshadow the mature elegance of Winwood's later solo work, and the soaring, keyboard-led title track ends the album--and the key phase of Traffic's career--on a suitably strong, communal note.
1974 album for Island, the last they cut for the label ever& their final outing until the 1994 reunion album on Virgin,'Far From Home'. Seven tracks, including the title cut and'Something New'.
A German issue of the English group's 1974 release. 1994. When The Eagle Flies Music When The Eagle Flies Music When The Eagle Flies Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) trafficing the skies A moody, elegant album. It's more in the line of the title tracks to "John Barleycorn Must Die" and "The Low Spark of High-heeled Boys" (but electric-piano based) than the pop or r&b tracks ('Hole in My Shoe,' 'Feelin' Alright') that made them popular. 'Something New' opens the album with a catchy, sweet, descending-chord riff . . . but strange things are afoot: it's a break-up song. Winwood & co. take their leave from AM radioland, and even put their FM career in jeopardy, with this collection of late-night musings on love, death, and the past.
"When the Eagle Flies" reminds me of albums like Brian Ferry's "Boys and Girls," Van Morrison's "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart," Richard & Linda Thompson's "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight," Jethro Tull's "Stormwatch," and Dylan's "Time Out of Mind." I think of songs like Ten Years After's 'I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes,' Pete Townshend's 'The Sea Refuses No River,' and Sandy Denny's solo piano-based songs. Overall, it's my favorite Traffic album, the one I listen to the most.

Spacey jazz, rock Although not their best selling album, it has been great to find this on CD. Jams on "Walking in the Wind" and "Graveyard People" are especially entrancing. Submitted by a reviewer (McAdoo, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
good stuff... this has always been a favorite of mine, though i like all traffic albums. its lesser known probably because
it took so long for it to be issued on cd and the vinyl is far and few inbetween. i kind of think it sounds like stevie was listening to the moody blues when he recorded this. my girl calls it mood music. When The Eagle Flies album
$6.55 SHOOT OUT AT THE FANTASY FACTORY is the second of Traffic's expanded line-up studio albums, following 1971's THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH-HEELED BOYS. The five extended pieces here have little in common with the pastoral, psychedelic folk-pop of Traffic's first four albums, betraying instead Steve Winwood's roots in the Spenser Davis Group and foreshadowing his later solo success in the '80s. Traffic toured constantly before recording FANTASY FACTORY, and the album's extended grooves are clearly born of these performance experiences.
The band's rhythm section was the famed Muscle Shoals Studio bass and drums team of David Hood and Roger Hawkins. But the character of the songs does not depend solely on rhythm. This material is highly inventive and memorably melodic, showcasing Winwood's passionately soulful singing. Throughout, Chris Wood's saxophone ...

$6.69 If your familiarity with Traffic extends no further than the band's first two albums--1967's MR. FANTASY and 1968's TRAFFIC--you might not have thought about Traffic in terms of a performance entity. In fact, Traffic became quite a flexible live act, documented on half of ...

When The Eagle Flies music CDs
$6.59 THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS was a big change from the quiet, largely acoustic flavor of Traffic's reunion album JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE. Although the gentle opening track, "Hidden Treasure," and the meandering, mellow closer, "Rainmaker," were in keeping with the pastoral vibe of the previous record, sandwiched in between those are several increasingly aggressive and lyrically sour songs about that evergreen topic--life in a rock & roll band.
The venality of the business gets a workout in the 12-minute title track, a slow-building jazz-rock groove that starts with a sense of quiet menace and ends with a pealing, distorted guitar solo, with one of Steve Winwood's most impassioned and lengthy organ solos at the song's heart. "Rock & Roll Stew" and Jim Capaldi's sneering putdown "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" are even more forceful, with only the groovy ecological message of "Many a Mile to Freedom" lightening the mood. Even that song rocks harder than anything on JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE, though, and that extra hint of power is likely what helped make THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS Traffic's most commercially successful ...

Two years on from the conceptual innovations of THICK AS A BRICK, Tull had learned how to crystallize the creativity of that prog-rock masterpiece and incorporate it into more traditional song structures. Thus, the songs here are full of daunting time signatures and dazzling feats of instrumental derring-do, but all in the context of shorter, more concise composition. There's also a darker edge to things here, as introduced by the tumultuous title cut.
The band's fascination with medieval-sounding themes was also beginning to blossom here, blending with their folk and prog influences. In this sense, WARCHILD can be seen as the template for much of what followed in the Tull catalog. The two best-known songs here represent extremes of the band's sound. "Bungle in the Jungle" is a bit of humorous riffery heavy on the hooks. "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day" is a poignant, folk-tinged ballad that ...

When The Eagle Flies CD music
$17.79 This two-fer from Beat Goes On features a pair of out-of-print Spirit LPs: Son of Spirit and Farther Along. Both originally released in 1976 on Mercury, these 22 tracks include some fine compositions, including "Stoney Night," "Magic Fairy Princess," and Lennon/McCartney's "Yesterday." This is an enjoyable reissue, but the absence of two original key members, vocalist Jay Ferguson and bassist Mark Anders, is felt. Most listeners would be better served with Epic/Legacy's 16-track Best of Spirit or the 1970 masterpiece The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. ~ Al Campbell

When The Eagle Flies CD music
$47.29 Following the wake of Picturesque Machstickable Messages From the Status Quo, Spare Parts tries to imitate the psychedelic sound that was so fashionable at the time. The disc is known for being one of the less-fortunate made by the British band, and they have even despised it on some occasions. In fact, 1969 was going to be the most dismal year in the story of Status Quo. Urged by Pye's request to reach the charts at any rate, the songs in the record reflect the band's frustrated attempts to please the company. The result is an irregular album that does not reach the imaginative sound of their earlier songs nor the brightness of their subsequent records. Beyond that, a friendly and deep listening ...
