The largest retrospective of Klaus Nomi's work yet released, Essential features 20 of his definitive tracks, spanning his operatic and classical-inspired works ("Samson and Delilah [Aria]," "Cold Song"), his forays into disco ("Icurok," "Falling in Love Again"), cheeky covers ("You Don't Own Me," "Just One Look"), and the experimental tracks ("Keys of Life," "From Beyond") that make up his surprisingly diverse body of work. While each of the other Nomi best-ofs features tracks that should be here -- the Purcell aria "Death" appears on Collection and "Three Wishes" and "I Feel Love" are on Eclipsed -- Essential more or less lives up to its name and is probably worth its import price for die-hard fans. ~ Heather Phares
It only takes a quick look at the cover to get a reasonably decent idea that this isn't your typical pop album: Decked out in a grossly oversized suit and heavy theatrical makeup, Klaus Nomi is not your typical pop singer, either. Both the cover and the music within lean heavily to the dramatic -- Nomi's delivery is all in a very operatic falsetto, though most of the music itself is more of the early-'80s European dance school (indeed, one of his collaborators here was Man Parrish, probably best-known for his later work with Man 2 Man). Only one of the tracks here was self-penned; rather, Nomi gets down to work here as an interpreter, turning in suitably skewed versions of "Lightning Strikes" and Chubby Checker's "The Twist." The real highlights here are his take on Kristian Hoffman's song "Total Eclipse," and a rather straight (ahem) reading of the aria from Saint-Saens' classical work Samson and Delilah. It's pretty hard to imagine your typical classical music buff embracing this song, let alone the entire album, but fans of off-kilter pop music will certainly find a lot to love about this album. ~ Sean Carruthers
This collection contains tracks from Nomi's debut and the follow-up, Simple Man. As such, the material is an interesting blend of catchy synth-pop, like 'Just One Look' and 'Falling In Love Again' (sung partly in German) and serious choral pieces like 'Death and From Beyond'. 'Rubberband Lazer', an addictive pop song with weird country infusions and brilliant bursts of synth, and the theatrical' Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead 'with its sing-along chorus are my favorites here. | | Klaus Nomi Simple Man CD (1982)
Klaus Nomi music CDs
$10.49 Eclectic pop singer Klaus Nomi blends classical, country, and standards in SIMPLE MAN. On this 12-track collection, the German artist performs "Ding Dong," his unique take on the classic song from "The Wizard of Oz."
Coming off such a left-field debut, it was up in the air as to what Klaus Nomi would do for a follow-up. That second album was Simple Man, and if listeners were unsure if the first album was a put-on, this one certainly didn't do much to clear things up. While the album starts out promisingly with an atmospheric fade-in followed by a hard dance number with the occasional Birthday Party-style guitar thrown in, the rest of the album did its damnedest to move the album's overall tone to one of self-parody. Could one really think any differently listening to the hyper-sugary cover of "Just One Look," the faux-country disco number "Rubberband Lazer," or the version of "Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead"? As with the debut album, Nomi's true capabilities are shown off by his versions of classical works -- in this case, "Death" (taken from Henry Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas") and "Return" (which is based on a choral number by John Dowland). The thing is, those pieces are right at the end of the album and the listeners who would enjoy them the most will probably already have been long shaken off by all of the kitsch leading up to it. ~ Sean Carruthers
The second album from the most unusual of German born singers who combined classical, kitsch, country, pop, standards.....and just plain fun into his act. Nomi ...
| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Klaus Nomi songs
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc ...

Jazz pianist Bill Evans's first released solo record almost glows with an absence of self-consciousness and a pure connection between Evans and his music. This sense of unaffected ease, of effortless flow between keys, chords, and tones, won Evans his third Grammy for ALONE. As usual, Evans's repertoire is heavy on American pop songs, taking compositions like "On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever)" to incomparably innovative places with his subtle, probing style. The introspective, nuanced version of "Never Let Me Go" is perhaps the most remarkable number, with the final two CD bonus tracks feeling tacked on; they include alternate takes of "Midnight Mood" and "A Time For Love," and both lack the sense of unity which characterizes the rest of ALONE.
The heart of this Grammy-nominated solo album lies in Evans's exquisite take on Jule Styne's "People," from "Funny Girl," which he attacks from within with very little improvisation, instead utilizing key shifts and his classic expressive use of color tones. The introspective quality which prevails on Evans's solo recordings is tempered on ALONE (AGAIN) by a smoothness and an assertive quality, both of which were characteristic of the pianist's music in the ...
| | Falco Out Of The Dark (Into The Light) CD (1998) Import
Klaus Nomi songs
$41.89 OUT OF THE DARK is the last studio album from "Rock Me Amadeus" Austrian pop singer Falco, who died in a car accident in 1998 at the age of 40. This nine-song CD includes "Der Komissar 2000," a remake of Falco's early '80s hit.
During the '90s, many synth-based artists from the previous decade toughened up their sound considerably, obviously having taken note of Nine Inch Nails. Adam Ant and Gary Numan would be included on this list, as well as Germany's Falco. But unlike the other aforementioned artists, Falco did not have to rely on the aid of another modern artist to resuscitate his recording career (Adam Ant/Trent Reznor, Gary Numan/Fear Factory) -- issuing Out of the Dark (Into the Light) on his own in 1998. Those expecting an album's worth of tunes in the same style as "Rock Me Amadeus" may be disappointed, as such tracks as "No Time for Revolution" and "Hit Me" are more hard-hitting ...
| | Flammable: Tribute To The Red Hot Chili Peppers CD (2001)
Klaus Nomi album
$14.45 Unlike many of the tributes compiled by Vitamin Records, Flammable doesn't rely on one single style of emulation (for example, chamber music). Instead, the ten artists enlisted perform a cross section of Red Hot Chili Peppers' material, which ranges stylistically from the straight-up boring electro of George Sarah's "Me and My Friends," which uses exactly none of the original song, to the charming twee pop of Gringo Floyd's take on "Scar Tissue." In between there's hot punk, cool funk, and even some hip-hop. Which was a good plan by Vitamin, as the styles above all co-exist inside the belly of the beast that is RHCP. The yowling punk rock of the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs' ...
