Siempre Estais Alli music CDs
$28.99 THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is a collection of rare and unreleased Beatles recordings; a companion book and 10-hour video are also planned. Among the material on the first volume are recordings by The Quarry Men (a band that featured a teen-aged John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison); five songs from the Beatles' unsuccessful audition for Decca Records on January 1, 1962; live tracks from various television appearances; and alternate versions of several early Beatles songs.
Additional personnel includes: Tony Sheridan (vocals, guitar); Brian Epstein, Eric Morecambe, Ernie Wise (spoken vocals); Andy White (drums).
Principally recorded between 1958 and 1964. "Free As A Bird" recorded circa 1977 and in 1994. Spoken tracks recorded between 1962 and 1994. Includes a 48-page booklet with track-by-track annotations, and liner notes by Derek Taylor.
"Free As A Bird" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Though the Beatles changed rock & roll forever from low culture to high art, they started as a skiffle group, a British amalgam of American rock & roll influences--Elvis' swagger, Little Richard's unholy gospel, the Everly Brothers' country-rock harmonies, Smokey Robinson's sensual soul. THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY: 1 traces these roots, tapping a rich motherlode of unreleased early Beatles material. There are scratchy recordings of the Quarry Men (Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison, circa 1958) and pre-Ringo Beatles practice sessions that show the Fabs dreaming of being Elvis and Buddy Holly. Amazingly well-preserved tracks from the early '60s show them starting to let their hair down, while rocking merrily through such pop standards of the time as "Ain't She Sweet" and "Besame Mucho." They were an electrifying live band, and among the treasures here are Ringo tearing through "I Wanna Be Your Man" and "Boys" at a 1964 TV taping, and John ripping into "Twist And Shout" at the band's 1963 Royal Command Performance after his famous request: "Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands, and the rest of you, if you'll just rattle your jewelry."
Equally compelling is the one "new" track. "Free As A Bird" was the pop event of 1995, a Lennon demo completed by the ...

| | Claire Holley Dandelion CD (2003)
Siempre Estais Alli music CDs
$13.49 Claire Holley's fourth album, Dandelion, is the sort of record whose craft is so fine and so subtle that the music nearly gets lost in itself -- while Holley is a capable songwriter and her voice has a winning warmth and purity, by the time the 11 songs come to an end, you could have a bit of trouble recalling what most of the album sounded like. Dandelion leaves little doubt about Holley's obvious talent, and the production and arrangements (by Holley in collaboration with two of her sidemen, Steve Graham and Rob Seals) have an open and natural sound that favors the material, but the material is ultimately the problem with this album. Musically, too much of Dandelion follows a very similar path: calm midtempo folk-pop with a hint of country twang that's pleasing upon first listen but gets to be a shade monotonous over time, and her skill as a lyricist doesn't quite overcome the frequent similarity of the melodies. Which is a shame, because the buzzy country-rock of "6 Miles to McKenney" and the witty, understated throb of "Waiting for the Whales" suggest she has some other ideas in mind, and they stand out from the other cuts here simply by their willingness to do something different. Dandelion is a good record from an artist with potential, but it also suggests that Claire Holley would do well to find a collaborator who can make her final product as good as her raw materials. ~ Mark Deming

| | Steve Lacy One More Time CD (2005)
Siempre Estais Alli songs
$14.39 This album was recorded live in July 2002, as part of Steve Lacy's "farewell" tour of Belgium, before he moved back to the United States. Joëlle Léandre was among the few musicians the saxophonist selected as partners for this ten-date event, and One More Time should provide all the proofs necessary to those who still don't understand why. Yes, the soprano sax and double bass form an unlikely pair, and yes, Lacy and Léandre come from very different backgrounds and approach free improvisation from separate paths, but why should any of that matter? In fact, the unusual instrumentation opens up a wide range of colors and expressions -- and these two sure know how to draw the best from such an opportunity -- and different approaches translate to a wider common vocabulary whenever the participating musicians know each other's work. And the result ...
