German electronic pop duo Modern Talking released their eighth album, ALONE, in 1999, including the single "You Are Not Alone" and "Sexy, Sexy Lover."
Modern Talking is one of the better-known outfits in European techno-pop, and on Alone the group delivers another batch of technologically advanced ditties. Utilizing all the elements of techno music, Modern Talking comes off as an ABBA-esque group of sugary sweet songwriters who make the most inoffensive music this side of the Carpenters. They have their obvious issues with being too simple and naïve, which may turn off a good part of their potential audience. On the other hand, there is no safer brand of pop for younger audiences, making this a recommendation for parents looking to get something from this brand of pop music for a young teen. It probably won't be what they want, but few other audiences will appreciate this music outside of techno-pop fanatics and there are few albums that use the word "sexy" as much as this does that are so harmless. ~ Bradley Torreano

Modern Talking's "Alone" album can be regarded as a positive development in their career in that it mixes their eighties style Euro pop with elements of the hi octane energy and beat of 90's dance and club music. It takes the pace and beat of the "In the Garden of Venus" album a few steps further. All of the songs are well produced and the Modern talking fan should not be disappointed. Recommended.

BACCHANAL/1969 is a reissue of two late 1960s releases by psychedelic jazz composer Gabor Szabo and features the tracks "Three King Fishers," "Love Is Blue," and a cover of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman."
This two-fer includes two late-'60s recordings guitarist Gabor Szabo released on his own Skye label (his partners were Gary McFarland and Cal Tjader). As an m.o. in his career as a leader, Szabo found not only commercial viability in covering the pop tunes of the day -- as opposed to the dusty standards that were the norm for jazz pickers at the time -- but creative expression as well. The first, Bacchanal, was the last to feature the band that had previously recorded for Impulse! The group included drummer Jim Keltner, guitarist Jim Stewart, bassist Louis Kabok, and percussionist Hal Gordon (Keltner and Kabok would remain for 1969). Szabo had been raising eyebrows ever since his tenure with Chico Hamilton for his blend of jazz and gypsy styles, but his Impulse! recordings, most notably Spellbinder, Jazz Raga, and Sorcerer, put him in a league of his own as he added pop, rock, and Indian modal and Middle Eastern scales to his intoxicating brew.
