Originally released in 1989, this third effort from the synth-pop band Alphaville (best known for the single "Forever Young") was produced by Klaus Schulze, previously of Tangerine Dream.
The Breathtaking Blue was a somewhat disappointing follow-up to Alphaville's early-1980s records Forever Young and Afternoons in Utopia. It lacked the shimmering standout quality of songs like "Big in Japan," "Forever Young" and "Afternoons in Utopia." The production, by Klaus Schulze and Alphaville, experiments with a somewhat richer instrumentation, adding strings, saxaphone, trumpet, double bass, electric and even acoustic guitars to Bernhard Lloyd's synthesizers. This strategy is met with mixed success. The lush production only serves to muddy "The Mysteries of Love," which might have been one of the album's better tracks had the songwriting been valued above the somewhat ostentatious arrangement. But the slinky bass and restrained sax ornamentation make the mildly jazzy "Heaven or Hell" one of the album's more interesting efforts. And "For a Million" is about as genuine as the band gets, thanks to the attractive minor-key melody and the surprising piano and acoustic guitar solos. But all things considered, Alpahville seems most in its element when sticking to simple synthesizer arrangements, as on the pretty "She Fades Away" and the clever "Middle of the Riddle" ("It's the middle of the riddle/It's not very serious/It's nothing but a big surprise/And the president's horse/is a rabbit of course/that is living in a big boy's mind"). Marian Gold's rich baritone vocals, with their classic Europop excesses, hold the record's diverging strands together. ~ Evan Cater
French edition of the synth-based Europop act's 1989 album for Atlantic. Ten tracks including 'The Mysteries Of Love', 'Heaven Or Hell', 'For A Million', 'She Fades Away' & 'Middle Of The Riddle'. Alphaville Breathtaking Blue Songs Breathtaking Blue Review

Breathtaking Blue album
$5.95 Following up her enormously popular debut, Out of the Blue, Debbie Gibson sought to grow from the teen fan base she had established, while not alienating those who made her a household name. The result is slickly produced teen pop, like her debut, but it's not as squeaky clean or as compulsively likable. That is not to say it's a bad album. "Lost in Your Eyes" is a pretty ballad that showcases her songwriting skills, her clear voice, and her talent on the piano. "Electric Youth" is a bouncy, frenetic song that is ridiculously sing-alongable, but at the same it is time hard to really identify with it unless you're 12 (or at least young at heart). "We Could Be Together," in which she basically tells her friends and family to go fly a kite, is practically anthemic in its joy at taking a risk on love: "I'll take this chance/I'll make this choice/I'll give up my security/for just the possibility/that we could be together/for a while." It's teen pop ...

Breathtaking Blue album
$9.39 With the release of this debut album in 1983, Paul Young was immediately hailed as an intriguing synthesis of the old and the new. Blessed with a classic blue-eyed-soul voice, in the Bobby Hatfield/Daryl Hall tradition, Young pays homage to R&B tradition with respectful covers of Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay ...

| | Todd Fancey Fancey CD (2004)
Breathtaking Blue music CDs
$12.95 Indie rock fans who are devout readers of fine print will recognize Todd Fancey as one of the less-hyped members of the really super supergroup the New Pornographers. He plays guitar for them, and also played in Limblifter with Kurt Dahle, who's also in the New Pornographers, and all over Fancey's album, too. Speaking of that, Fancey is Todd Fancey's debut record, and fans of his day job will welcome it as they would a family member. More soft rock than the New Pornographers, more fixated on the '70s too, the album is nearly as hook-filled and sounds like it was built in the same factory -- a much sunnier factory -- less prone to songs about alcoholism and more likely to burst out into silly songs about rock & roll ("Rock N' Roll Rhythm"), or outer space ("Dial Jupiter"). Fancey also makes more use of Neko Case, putting Sara Wheeler's angel-sweet vocals on every song. His songwriting doesn't quite measure up to Carl Newman's or Daniel Behar's, but he is certainly no slouch. Fancey builds many of the songs around his electric piano, which gives the record a unique sound. "Carry Me" is a perfect way to kick off the record; it's a breezy power pop tune with an infectious ...
