| | Doro Force Majeure CD (1989)
Machine II Machine
$14.45 1989 album for the German heavy metal/hard rock goddess. 13 tracks. Vertigo.
In the 1980s, Warlock was among Germany's most exciting heavy metal bands -- which is saying a lot when you consider that Germany also produced Accept and the Scorpions. Lyrically, Warlock fell into the fantasy metal category; if you're a fan of headbangers like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Candlemass, and Ronnie James Dio, you owe it to yourself to have some Warlock albums in your collection. But when former Warlock vocalist Doro Pesch launched her solo career with 1989's Force Majeure, fantasy metal was not a high priority for the German singer. This album found the rough-voiced Doro taking more of a pop-metal approach; references to the supernatural aren't prevalent, and Force Majeure is closer to Crimes of Passion-era Pat Benatar than Warlock (although Warlock's Tommy Henriksen is employed on bass and co-wrote five of the tunes). ...

Machine II Machine
$13.95 Best known for her years as lead vocalist for Warlock, Doro Pesch left that West German gothic metal outfit in the late '80s to pursue a solo career. While Warlock (a band lyrically along the lines of Iron Maiden, Grim Reaper, and Helloween) embraced fantasy-oriented gothic themes, Doro's solo albums took a slicker, more commercial arena ...

Machine II Machine
$13.75 Principally recorded at Woodcliff Studios, Sherman Oaks, California in January 1996.
This 2004 Special Edition of BEWARE OF DARKNESS includes bonus tracks and expanded packaging.
Beware of Darkness, the follow-up to California prog unit Spock's Beard's underground hit debut, The Light, is a complete exercise in MORE. Using George Harrison's beautiful song (but Leon Russell's version of it) as a take-off point, the band uses a full-blown choir, thundering guitars, and Neal Morse's growling vocal to create another valid and moving version of the tune. Beware of Darkness as an album is more "song-oriented" than its predecessor. It contains eight tunes instead of four and the longest, the closing "Time Has Come," is a mere 16 minutes, while the shortest, "Chatauqua," is a mere 2:49! In addition, the band's scope widened here; aside from references to Yes, King Crimson, and early Genesis, listeners can also hear elements of Gentle Giant, Emerson, ...
| | Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship CD (2005)
Machine II Machine
$10.15 Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship is the saxophonist's debut recording as a leader, a self-issued CD made in 2004, prior to his leaving teaching to perform full-time. With a core group including pianist Takana Miyamoto, bassist Moffet Morris, and drummer Chris Burroughs, occasionally augmented by additional musicians, Scruggs includes several promising originals. "Antithesis is the heartfelt opener, with the leader playing lead alto with tenor overdubbed behind it, adding guitarist Daniel Clay and percussionist Jose Musi Marcano in this brooding Latin piece. Scruggs switches to tenor for "The Voice," which showcases Miyamoto at length and has an obvious Coltrane influence. "Beersheba," written with guitarist Gary Kurz, has more of a pop flavor with a hint of the Caribbean, even though there are no vocals, with the leader doubling on flute and Wurlitzer in addition to tenor. Scruggs' adaptation of the well-known "Blue in Green" features his big toned tenor, though the piece oddly transforms into a reggae setting as Daniel Clay is added to the mix, which proves to be more of a distraction than a novelty. But the balance of Will Scruggs' first CD shows a lot of potential and he will be one to watch. ~ Ken Dryden
Born in Atlanta, Will Scruggs began playing sax at the age of 8 before going on to be voted Most Outstanding Member of the Enloe High School Jazz Band in Raleigh, North Carolina, and selected as the First Chair Baritone Sax in the 1998 Honor Band of America. His greatest influences include John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Griffin, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, and Stevie Wonder. After becoming the first student ever to graduate from Emory with Highest Honors in Jazz Performance, "Mr. Scruggs" joined Teach for America and spent a year teaching first grade in Southeast Atlanta. Will has recorded two full-length albums of original music with Cadillac Jones, an original jazz/funk band out of Atlanta. Their second record, Junk in the Trunk, was released in November 2003 on Harmonized Records, a subsidiary of Leeway's Homegrown Music Network.
