Jean Martinon Conducts Ravel
$8.49 OOPS!... I DID IT AGAIN was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Oops!...I Did It Again" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
This second album by the former Mouseketeer turned nymphet heartthrob breaks little new ground compared to BABY ONE MORE TIME. The formula here remains, deliberately, the same: a candy-colored mix of Eurodance, hip-hop, and old-fashioned pop ballads. As before, the lyrics split the difference between "Baby, I love you so bad," as in "Can't Make You Love Me," and "Sorry, I think of you just as a friend," in the title song.
There are also some genuinely amusing moments, as in the conversational finale of "Oops!" in which Britney, after being informed that her boyfriend has recovered the jewel the old lady dropped into the ocean at the end of the TITANIC movie, replies "Oh, you shouldn't have." Most of the stuff here is, of course, transparently disposable pop, but to give Spears her due, she's a far, far better singer than any of the mall-rat pop stars of the late '80s.
Engineers include: John Amatiello, Harvey Mason, Jr., Rodney Jerkins.

| | Winter's Solstice, Vol. 2 CD
Jean Martinon Conducts Ravel
$8.69 Depending on the mood you're in, this compilation album will make you dream, smile, or cry a nostalgic tear. It is a typical Windham Hill sampler: wistful, joyful, lush, and lovely. Most songs stick with piano or string instrumentation, and none of them could ever be classified as up-tempo. A few of the tracks, including "The Gift" and "Sung to Sleep," sound like Windham Hill's famous pianist George Winston, but they are actually performed by lesser-known artists. The selections are an interesting combination of classical pieces ("Chorale #220," J.S. Bach), traditional melodies ("Come Life Shaker Life"), and original compositions ("By the Fireside," written and performed by William Allaudin Mathieu). There are almost no vocals in the compilation, although a boy's choir adds an ethereal quality to the end of "Salve Regina." Windham Hill co-founder William Ackerman proves that he's an artist as well as a label exec with his moving, poignant performance of the original composition "Abide the Winter." All in all, this is another success for the label and its talented bunch of artists. It isn't edgy or dramatic or hooky, but it's not intended to be. However, each song in the collection is beautiful, atmospheric, and timeless. ~ L. Katz
| | Vanessa-Mae Storm CD (1998)
Jean Martinon Conducts Ravel
$11.69 Former classical violinist Vanessa-Mae follows her pop debut album, THE VIOLIN PLAYER, with another energetic marriage of classical music, pop, and techno beats. Most of the songs on STORM are lively instrumentals, wild remakes of classical pieces like Bach's "Partita in E," whose opening movement finds new life here as "Bach Street Preludes." In the liner notes, Vanessa-Mae offers this statement to potential critics: "Anyone who thinks this is blasphemy is unlikely to be in the good company of a genius such as the pianist/composer Rachmaninov, who performed his own 'untraditional' version of this violin piece on piano." Vanessa-Mae's whispery vocals have a delicate prettiness on 'I'm a Doun' and "Embrasse Moi (You Fly Me Up)."
Recording information: Comfort Place Studios; Cts Studios; EMI Abbey Road Studios, London, England; Whitfield Street Studios, London, England.
Personnel includes: Vanessa-Mae (violin).
Personnel: Vanessa-Mae (vocals, violin, background vocals); Miguel Montero (vocals); Andy Hill (guitar, keyboards, programming); Geoff Whitehorn (guitar); Antón Jiménez (flamenco guitar); Richard Cottle (keyboards, programming); Graham Broad (drums); Peter Lockett (percussion); Wendy Page (background vocals).
| | Whitney Houston My Love Is Your Love CD (1998)
Jean Martinon Conducts Ravel
$12.95 MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "It's Not Right But It's Okay" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "It's Not Right But It's Okay" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. "Heartbreak Hotel" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best R&B Song.
Whitney Houston's voice is a marvel of technical perfection. Equally at home with pop, R&B or Gospel, Houston exerts unprecedented control over her celebrated pipes, moving through a song like a graceful bird in flight. It is this quality that makes MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE such a consistently satisfying work. With a talent like hers, there's no need for Houston to stick to any one formula, so MY LOVE is all over the stylistic map. There's a novel update of the rock & roll classic "Heartbreak Hotel" enlivened by guest appearances from Faith Evans and Kelly Price. There's the no-nonsense "In My Business," where Houston gets down and dirty with hip-hop star Missy Elliott. Appropriately, though, this strong and varied collection closest out with a tune that hints at Houston's church-raised roots, the heartfelt, inspirational "You'll Never Stand Alone."
Engineers include: Brad Gilderman, Manny Marroquin, Rickie St. Hilaire.
