Audio Mixer: Benny Faccone. Photographers: Lucero Gonzalez; Marina Chavez. Arranger: Maná. A harmonically wise and confident band capable of loosely wound Latin pop/rock, Maná has returned with some of their best songs of their career stuck to a midday high-gloss finish. No twitchy tokenism here -- it would be ridiculous to lump this music along with the patronizing Latin pop stars crossing over into America's gaze -- but the album's generally mid-tempo moseys can only feature an intriguing cross between Cheap Trick and the films of Carlos Diegues before things seem especially anachronistic. Not due to threading disparate genres together, not due to misguided skill, but for how the band seems more concerned with pin-drop clear production standards than the naturalized, flowing, sit-down-and-play setting the music demands. Difficult to hate, then. A talented misdirection that sold millions. ~ Dean Carlson As trippy and loose-limbed as the album art may be (echoes of Santana's ABRAXAS), SUENOS LIQUIDOS finds these rockeros Mexicanos creating an ever-more refined sound. It's a free-and-easy rock & roll that's been baked in the Yucatan sun, with all the fun of Bryan Adams, the drive of the Police and an unflinching love of the ballad. With a nylon-string guitar fill here or a harmonized vocal fadeout there, frontman Fher and drummer Alex Gonzalez display an impeccable production sense, enhancing the mood while keeping the mix clear and each instrument distinct. Fher's gone and caught gypsy fever, with his dreamy, dust-throated crooning about a mermaid enchantress on "Hechicera." Lead guitarist Sergio Vallin provides fine shredding over the song's reggae-rock beat, a familiar Mana sound. "Un Lobo" and "Clavado" are pure chunky-riff fun, songs about the highs and lows of being lost in love. And who could resist all those sweet chorus harmonies? These chicos may be getting a little older, but their music is still full of life, y en Espanol como siempre. Suenos Liquidos
$13.05 Illumination Remixed By Stereo Lab,Cornelius,My Bloody Valent
The Pastels: Stephen McRobbie (guitars, vocals, keyboards); Aggi (bass, vocals, melodica); Katrina Mitchell (drums, vocals, keyboards, melodica, violin). Additional personnel: Norman Blake, Dean Wareham (guitar, vocals); Jonathan Kilgour, Gerard Love (guitar); Isobel Campbell (cello); Sarah Ward (flute); Dawn Kelly (French horn); Bill Wells (piano); Gregor Reid (percussion). Producers: Ian Carmichael, The Pastels, Gregor Reid. Recorded at Cava Studios, Glasgow, Scotland. On paper, Illuminati looks like it would be an amazing collection of remixes. With 15 assorted artists remixing twelve different songs by The Pastels, one would think there'd be a great deal of variation between the remixes, especially considering the talent of the remixers. But Illuminati ultimately falls a bit flat, as artists as diverse as My Bloody Valentine, Cornelius, Stereolab, To Rococo Rot, Future Pilot AKA, and Jim O'Rourke, among others, mostly play things too close to the vest. The result is that the tracks sound remarkably similar, and, for the most part, like white-washed versions of the original songs. It doesn't help that three songs make multiple appearances in various forms. Some tracks end up working no better than aural wallpaper. My Bloody Valentine, which makes two appearances, seems to be the chief influence of most of the other remixers; the first remix is too short to leave much of an impression, so ardent fans won't be as happy as they expected to be upon finding out that two new My Bloody Valentine creations are included. The best moments come from Cornelius, Future Pilot AKA, John McEntire, and Ian Carmichael. The Cornelius remix of "Windy Hill" is as interesting and exciting as anything from his Fantasma album; it's pretty, touching, and accomplished. Ian Carmichael turns The Viaduct into an even ...
| | Jim O'Rourke Insignificance CD (2001)
Suenos Liquidos
$12.69 Personnel includes: Jim O'Rourke, Tim Barnes, Darin Gray, Glenn Kotche, Jeff Tweedy, Rob Mazurek, Ken Vandermark, Ken Champion. Jim O'Rourke's second full-length solo album for Drag City has a similarly odd and vividly colored cartoon cover as 1999's EUREKA, but while it takes the pop experimentation of that album as a starting point, INSIGNIFICANCE goes considerably farther. This is Jim O'Rourke's most conventional indie rock album by some distance, with none of the 15-minute solo guitar instrumentals or noise experiments that colored his earlier albums. Featuring vocals on every song for the first time in his career, O'Rourke makes a virtue of his somewhat thin voice in much the same way that James Mercer of the Shins does, by delivering his sometimes elliptical lyrics in an offhand, conversational tone that fits surprisingly well with the elaborate arrangements of songs such as the title track and "Get A Room." Where EUREKA sounded heavily influenced by Van Dyke Parks and the more baroque end of 1960s sunshine pop, INSIGNIFICANCE is a scrappier album, featuring more of the electric guitar assault that first made Jim O'Rourke's name. All pretensions ...
