Sepultura: Max Cavalera (vocals, acoustic guitar); Andreas Kisser (acoustic & electric guitars); Paulo Jr. (bass, percussion); Igor Cavalera (drums, percussion). Recorded at Rockfield Studios and Cheepstow Castle, South Wales. Chaos A.D. was the record where everything came together for Sepultura, when they graduated from being an excellent, if derivative, band into one of metal's most unique voices. Their strident political dissidence is more focused than ever, referring explicitly to injustices in their native Brazil. The band's thick, chunky guitars, busy percussion, and hoarsely shouted vocals may be rooted in death metal, but it was often hard to call Sepultura a true death metal band, even if they flirted ...

| | Eric Clapton 461 Ocean BLVD. CDs (1974) Remastered; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Diabolica
$16.19 Includes a bonus disc Live At Hammersmith Odeon, London. Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar, dobro); Yvonne Elliman (vocals, guitar); George Terry (guitar, background vocals); Albhy Galuten (piano, electric piano, clavichord, synthesizer); Dick Sims (organ); Carl Radle (bass guitar); Jamie Oldaker (drums, percussion); Al Jackson, Jim Fox (drums); Tom Bernfield (background vocals). Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder. 461 Ocean Boulevard is Eric Clapton's second studio solo album, arriving after his side project of Derek and the Dominos and a long struggle with heroin addiction. Although there are some new reggae influences, the album doesn't sound all that different from the rock, pop, blues, country, and R&B amalgam of Eric Clapton. However, 461 Ocean Boulevard is a tighter, more focused outing that enables Clapton to stretch out instrumentally. Furthermore, the pop concessions on the album -- the sleek production, the concise running times -- don't detract from the rootsy origins of the material, whether it's Johnny Otis' "Willie and the Hand Jive," the traditional blues "Motherless Children," Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff," or Clapton's emotional original "Let It Grow." With its relaxed, friendly atmosphere and strong bluesy roots, 461 Ocean Boulevard set the template for Clapton's '70s albums. Though ...

Utopia: Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar); Roger Powell (vocals, keyboards); Kasim Sulton (vocals, bass guitar); Willie Wilcox (vocals, drums). As was his wont in those days, Todd Rundgren, having made a solo album, Hermit of Mink Hollow, for release in 1978, returned to his band project, Utopia, to craft their follow-up to 1977's Oops! Wrong Planet. At the spring 1979 San Francisco concert captured on this archival release, the group apparently had been at work on the album to the extent of knowing its title, Adventures in Utopia, and its projected release date, which Rundgren gave as July 6 (it actually appeared six months later). But in addition to previewing the songs "Shot in the Dark," "Love Alone," and "Last of the New Wave Riders," the band was prepared to review its first four albums, ...

| | Yellowcard Paper Walls CD (2007)
Diabolica
$13.89 On their fifth full-length, PAPER WALLS, Yellowcard prove again that they are one of the more likeable and substantive bands on the punk-pop scene. In addition to the fact that they are the only punk-pop act with a violin player, Yellowcard set themselves apart from their peers by penning catchy tunes and rocking hard, but doing both with a sense of confidence born of true authenticity. Powered by strong material and clean, muscular performances, PAPER WALLS is the sound of a young band hitting their stride. Like most pop-punk albums Yellowcard occasionally dips into sappiness, or drops in a coy, nagging chorus, but on the whole there are fewer of such moments than average, and Yellowcard's stronger moments--like the opening rocker "Take Down" or the snaky, infectious "Shrink the World"-- shine brighter. Yellowcard is neither the flashiest nor the most popular among the new millennium's pop-punk bands but their fifth album Paper Walls goes a long way in proving that they are among the best of their breed. Despite violinist Sean Mackin, whose very presence can seem like a clever ploy (even as the instrument fades in prominence over the years), they're not attention-mongers -- their pop is melodic but not incessantly hooky, they rock hard but not furiously. Without ever seeming laid-back, ...
