(4 Customer Reviews)
Recorded live in August and September, 1994. Includes liner notes by Mana.
All songs written or co-written by Fher and/or Alex except "El Rey" (Jose Alfredo Jimenez).
In terms of live albums, Maná's En Vivo is exemplary. It's filled with hits, offers crystalline sound quality, and boasts remarkable band-audience rapport, highlighted by the numerous moments when the crowd sings along to the better-known songs. Fher Olvera is a captivating frontman, and it's him in particular who engages this lively crowd most. The band as a whole deserves mention too, though. It not only plays its many hits well, but it often gives the songs new life, extending them and letting them go on until they're truly finished. And regarding those hits, some of Maná's most beloved are here, including "De Pies a Cabeza," "Oye Mi Amor," "Rayando el Sol," "Como Te Deseo," and an acoustic performance of the absolutely beautiful "Vivir Sin Aire" saved for last. Granted, most of these songs are from the 1994 Donde Jugaran los Niños? album. In fact, pretty much every song from that album appears in the 18-song set list somewhere. But that's largely because En Vivo captures Maná in the wake of that album's mammoth success, and also because the guys only had two albums to speak of at the time of this one's release in 1995. So while En Vivo is certainly a wonderful live representation Donde Jugaran los Niños? -- which may be reason enough for a great many fans to get excited, since that album is such a favorite -- it doesn't represent any of Maná's successive work, which includes a bounty of further hits. Keep that in mind when considering En Vivo -- it's far from a career overview and features the band in its early incarnation, even if it is exemplary. ~ Jason Birchmeier

$8.25 SUENOS LIQUIDOS won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Latin/Rock Alternative Performance.
As trippy and loose-limbed as the album art may be (echoes of Santana's ABRAXAS), SUENOS LIQUIDOS finds these rockeros Mexicanos creating an ever-more refined sound. It's a free-and-easy rock ...

En Vivo
$7.75 CUANDO LOS ANGELES LLORAN was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
Although stylistically similar to DONDE JUGARAN LOS NINOS, CUANDO LOS ANGELES LLORAN ("When the Angels Cry") is a relatively harder-rocking, stripped-down record for Mexican pop-rock outfit Mana. The sweet, atmospheric synth sounds of past records are pushed more to the background and Sergio Vallin joins the band as first-chair guitarist, with ...

FRAGILE marks the moment when Yes left the planet and took up residence on one of cover artist Roger Dean's far-off lands. While the band managed to capture the popular imagination with its condensed, accessible version of "Roundabout," which they edited down to a single from the lengthier album version, for the most part FRAGILE laid the groundwork for the expansive, complex, keyboard-dominated work that typified the style known as "progressive rock." The record also marks the arrival of Rick Wakeman--a classically trained keyboardist whose vast array of synthesizers and effects was matched only by his prodigious ability.
In addition to "Roundabout," the band's ...

En Vivo
$18.29 The follow-up to the hit album THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, Chimaira's self-titled third CD continues the group's quest to become the most pummeling, no-frills, downright scary metalcore band on the planet. With the addition of new drummer Kevin Talley, who adds an even greater degree of rhythmic precision and aggression, Chimaira further refines its unique combination of old-school thrash and modern death metal.
"Nothing Remains" takes harmonic cues from Scandinavian black metal, delivering horror-movie-worthy chord progressions with a speed and drive equal to the most mind-numbing industrial beats. "Left for Dead" opens with military-style snare drum rudiments before bursting into a scathing denunciation of greed that recalls early Metallica. Though Chimaira's electronic elements are more subtle than on previous albums, well-placed sound effects add to the record's intense spookiness, particularly on the epic seven-and-a-half minute closer "Lazarus," a chilling, yet strangely sensitive, narrative about a friend's suicide.

Metalcore is full of bands that have mastered the art of being savagely ferocious. Actually, savage ferocity is a primary ingredient if a band is going to provide true metalcore. It goes with the territory. But one thing that fewer metalcore bands have mastered is the art of being truly hooky. Hatebreed and ...
