After a million lineup changes, several labels and a couple of breakups, singer/guitarist Jeff Ott and company return with yet another Fifteen album on Sub-City Records. The fight-for-your-rights politics are as strong as ever, the epic-length pop-punk songs are still present; but a couple things make Lucky stand out from their previous records. For starters, this album is named after their ex-bassist, who tragically took his own life a couple years prior to this release. Second, proceeds of this record are being donated to the Redwood Summer Justice Project, a very worthy cause and a very heartfelt dedication. Fifteen still fight the good fight against evil corporate ways. ~ Mike DaRonco

Lucky album
$12.35 Taking into account the tattoos, nose rings, and spiky haircuts, one might be forgiven for instantly pegging Lit as a punk-pop band no different from a dozen other Orange County, California combos. One listen to the group's recordings, however, reveals what Lit fans have always known--the band creates some of the most diverse and well-crafted music of its genre. On the group's self-titled fourth album, Lit's trademark Cheap Trick-esque power-pop is very much in evidence, but the sound is fleshed out with echoes of Kiss, Billy Squier, Foghat, and a host of other 1970s and '80s arena rockers. Standout tracks include "Lullaby," a Dashboard Confessional-like life-on-the-road weeper, and "Forever Begins Right Now," a bouncy British Invasion-style rave-up.
This eponymous set is Lit's fourth, and their most self-assured to date. After a three-year hiatus, during which they ended their relationship with RCA, the bandmembers are obviously raring to go; their self-confidence is evidenced by their decision to produce this album themselves, and they deftly emphasize their full-bodied styling while giving plenty of play to the strong melodies that set this set alight. They're even willing to hand over the crucial guitar solo on "Needle ...
| | Bad Religion Empire Strikes First CD (2004)
Lucky CD music
$11.59 A sense of justice and moral outrage is frequently part of punk's ethos, and Bad Religion has willfully flown this flag since the early 1980s. The title of the band's 2004 release, THE EMPIRE STRIKES FIRST, and the songs "Let Them Eat War" and "Sinister Rouge" indicate that Bad Religion has a thing or two to say about United States foreign policy and the George W. Bush administration, among other things. Driving guitars, thundering bass, and jackhammer drums create a sonic assault that reinforces the group's ideological fervor and underscores the pitch of its rage.
Though Bad Religion borrows ...
| | NOFX Greatest Hits Ever Written (By Us) CD (2004)
Lucky music CDs
$11.39 Twenty years is a long time for any band, let alone one that plays jocular warp-speed anthems with titles like "Party Enema" and "Green Corn." Nevertheless, here it is, NOFX's typically self-deprecating Greatest Songs Ever Written: By Us. Entertaining liner notes trace the combo's history in photos, drawings, Xeroxed show bills, and Fat Mike's own scribbled narration; 26 tracks take you from NOFX's first full-lengths in the 1980s through their somewhat surprising, yet still snarky political awakening with 2003's War on Errorism. ("Franco-Unamerican" rhymes "Michael Moore" and "Awful Truth" with "Public Enemy" and "Regan Youth.") ...

| | Euphone Hashin' It Out CD (2000)
Lucky songs
$12.39 Most of Euphone's acclaim stems from drummer/mastermind Ryan Rapsys' ability to manipulate a drum set in a more impressive manner than people are often used to hearing. Rapsys' style centers on flawless techniques, and he routinely performs stunning fills that are difficult for the normal ear to even comprehend. Hashin' It Out, unfortunately, sees Euphone attempt to focus on some much stranger sounds than usual, and in doing so also finds the band at times unable to sustain its experimental leanings. Tracks like the Latin-tinged "Press On" are musically quite technical, at times even reminiscent of the slightly more rocking early Euphone records, but other selections (such as drudging "Honey I'll Be Home for Suppertime") are a bit lackluster, never really commanding any focused attention. When a band shies away from something it is quite proficient at in order to experiment with a more diverse sound, it can create major gaps in consistency. The two-piece ...
| | Alison Moyet Essential CD (2003)
Lucky album
$15.15 Husky-voiced chanteuse Alison Moyet achieved her greatest success with Vince Clarke under their dance-pop duo, Yaz, but her career as a solo artist didn't maintain such momentum. The Essential looks back on this talented singer with the inclusion of only the most sophisticated tracks from her 20-plus career, regardless of her fluctuating popularity. The Yaz classic "Don't Go" kicks things off; however, Moyet's moody aura carries the collection with songs such as "Love Resurrection," "Wishing You Were Here," and "Weak in the Presence ...
