Mellow Guitar
$8.09 The master of the seven-string guitar, George Van Eps, joins the rising young jazz guitarist Howard Alden, which works perfectly in spite of a 45-year difference in age and different approaches to the guitar. Van Eps' chordal style meshes perfectly with Alden's single note lines in part because of the younger man's study of the senior's recordings and Alden's quick ear and gift for harmony. In any case, it was an obvious thrill for Alden to play with the experienced Van Eps, who literally invented the seven-string guitar (also played by Bucky Pizzarelli) and would soon be added to Alden's musical arsenal. The second of four CDs that they would make together prior to Van Eps' death in 1998, they play a mix of popular standards and show tunes from the 1930s, '40s and '50s. Highlights include a lyrical "What's New." a deliberate "I Could Write a Book," and an intricate "All the Things You Are," along with less frequently played chestnuts like the swinging "It's Wonderful." Van Eps is unaccompanied on both of his original compositions, "Lap Piano" and "Forty-Eight." Bassist Dave Stone and drummer Jake Hanna, who sticks to brushes, are present on most of the tracks. ...

| | George Van Eps Soliloquy CD (1968)
Mellow Guitar
$12.35 The inventor of the seven-string guitar (which he called a "lap piano"), George Van Eps always kept the melody in mind and was able to play a theme, its harmonies, and a bassline simultaneously in an unhurried and relaxed style while creating the most beautiful chords in the world. The son of the pioneering banjoist Fred Van Eps, he was a significant musician starting in the early '30s and spent much of his life playing in the studios. The guitarist appeared on many jazz recordings along the way, but other than four titles in 1949, his recorded debut as a leader did not take place until he headed an album for Columbia in 1956. Late in life Van Eps made three ...

| | Karrin Allyson Ballads CD (2001) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Mellow Guitar
$43.09 A unique version of the American vocalist's noted "BALLADS" album issued out of Japan; contains one additional track. 2002, Japanese import.
Since John Coltrane's original 1962 BALLADS is quite delberately one of his most mainstream efforts, the contemporary jazz singer Karrin Allyson's superb recreation of this landmark session is less of a conceptual stretch than it might have been otherwise. Neither is it a mere waxworks-like simulacrum. For one, Allyson's wholesome sound is perfectly suited to these songs. In fact, it's the very innocence of ballads like "I Wish I Knew," "Too Young To Go Steady," and "Nancy (With The Laughing Face)" which lent such poignancy to the iconic saxophonist's melodically rhapsodic readings, and now spur Allyson on to such beautifully-rendered performances of her own. The singer also receives sympathetic support from the pianist James Williams, and one of John Coltrane's worthiest descendants, the saxophonist James Carter.
Jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson strikes a sentimental chord with this super fine 2001 release, inspired by tenor sax titan John Coltrane's infamous Ballads LP. The diva exhibits her near flawless phraseology and alluring vigor throughout these wonderfully executed pieces. Allyson also receives exemplary support from what some might consider ...
