| | Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs CDs (1999) Box Set
Reich: Phase Patterns, Pendulum Music, Etc / Avantgarde
$31.59 Each CD in this box set is also available separately on Merge (166, 167 & 168).
Originally envisioned as a 100-song stage revue but cut down to 69 songs (as Stephin Merritt explained, "That was the first love-related number I could think of") and released on three CDs under the name of the first of Merritt's many musical projects (also including the 6ths, Future Bible Heroes, and the Gothic Archies), 69 LOVE SONGS is a sprawling masterpiece of alternately romantic and rueful tunes. Where each previous Magnetic Fields albums had a specific musical identity, 69 LOVE SONGS leaps casually through genres that include show tunes, jazz, country, punk, techno, and '80s-style synth pop, somehow managing throughout to sound like no one but the Magnetic Fields. Though the three CDs were originally released as a box set enclosed in a special slipcase with an exclusive booklet, Merge Records also released the three 23-song discs separately as 69 LOVE SONGS, Volumes One, Two and Three.
Includes a 76-page booklet.

| | Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos CD (1998)
Reich: Phase Patterns, Pendulum Music, Etc / Avantgarde
$9.29 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Guitarist Marc Ribot is well-known and respected for his session work with the likes of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, as well as his association with John Zorn and other downtown New York experimental musicians. Like several others in that scene, Ribot has formed a group to create an outlet for an interest in ethnic music, in this case, the music of the late Cuban composer, instrumentalist, and bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez, who wrote most of the tunes on this CD. The result is a well-crafted album that should bring Cuban music to a whole new audience.
The album's overall feel is understated--on many cuts it's just Ribot, a bassist, a drummer, and a percussionist. Ribot's guitar solos are always highly articulate and he has a great command over a variety of tones. A few cuts also feature organ (either frequent Zorn collaborator Anthony Coleman or John Medeski), and Ribot even takes a couple of spoken vocals on "No Me Llores Mas" and "La Vida Es Un Sueno." The production is spare and uncluttered, giving ...
| | John Fahey Death Chants, Breakdowns & Military Waltzes CD (1999)
Reich: Phase Patterns, Pendulum Music, Etc / Avantgarde
$8.09 This reissue contains both the 1963 and re-recorded 1967 editions of DEATH CHANTS, BREAKDOWNS & MILITARY WALTZES.
Tracks 1-12 originally released in 1963 on Takoma (1003). Tracks 13-22 originally released in 1967 on Takoma (1003). Includes liner notes by Byron Coley and Chester C. Petranick (John Fahey).
Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Fahey recorded two entirely different versions of this record: one issued in 1963 and one mostly of re-recordings in 1967. The CD reissue of Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes does Fahey fans a massive favor by combining both versions onto one disc. Preceded only by the super-rare original version of Blind Joe Death, the 1963 LP of Death Chants was the first Fahey album to gain reasonably wide distribution. It's a work that beautifully displays both Fahey's virtuosity on folk and blues guitar and a distinct composing voice that draws much from folk and blues traditions, but is not quite part of either school. Fahey's gift for making music that's tranquil and evocative, but also with enough odd angularity and minor melody to give it depth and ambiguity, is evident right from the start, and heard to best advantage on "When the Springtime Comes Again," "Some Summer Day," and the epic "America." Even on the pieces with more straight blues connections, Fahey achieves a full ...

$15.49 | | Davka Lavy's Dream CD (1996)
Reich: Phase Patterns, Pendulum Music, Etc / Avantgarde
$13.99 In 1996, violinist Daniel Hoffman, cellist Moses Sedler, and doumbeck and zarb player Adam Levenson (with special guest Norbert Stachel playing flute on one track) released the album Lavy's Dream on an obscure San Francisco label. Few people heard it, even fewer bought it, and it disappeared into the realm of the obscure. Enter John Zorn, one of the few to be sure in more ways than one. In the spring of 2000, the band reassembles, cut five more tracks, and then issues the whole bunch on this CD. No wonder Zorn was so keen to reissue in his Radical Jewish Culture series. There is simply nothing like it. Davka is aa chamber ensemble who uses Jewish folk melodies, classical music both Eastern and Western, jazz improvisation, and elements of klezmer to produce a music that is somber and moody yet full of spark and wonder. Their musical sophistication combines mixed harmonic and interval ...
