György Ligeti: Continum; Zehn STÜCK FÜR Bläserquintet; Artikulation
$13.95 This live recording captures Caetano Veloso during the New York leg of his Circuladô tour in 1992. Naturally, several of the tracks here are from Veloso's strong 1991 release, Circuladô. But the two main highlights of this CD are the absolutely stunning version of Bob Dylan's "Jokerman" and the equally superb version of Djavan's romantic hit "Oceano." On the latter, Veloso is backed solely by his own acoustic guitar, and the result is nothing else than sheer musical perfection and beauty. These two tracks alone make the album more than worthwhile, but there is a lot more to it -- for example the beautiful "Queixa," which gains a completely new and dramatic string introduction. Veloso also sings the pretty "Debaixo Dos Caracóis Dos Seus Cabelos," written by Erasmo Carlos and Roberto Carlos for Veloso during his exile in London, and "Mano a Mano," a nice tango by Argentine superstar Carlos Gardel. "Um Indio" gains a more robust and direct musical frame, and many people find this version even better than the classic album recording from 1977. "O Leaozinho," from the same 1977 album, does not come off very well, but without a doubt the real low point of this CD is the horrible electric guitar solo that concludes an otherwise nice "A Filha da Chiquita Bacana." Why Veloso permitted his guitarist to solo in this way is something of a mystery, but this misstep is also a very small detail toward the end of an otherwise very fine live album. ~ Philip Jandovsky
The album Circuladô had so much success in the previous year that Veloso released this double CD with some of its ...
| | Dirty Three In The Fishtank CD (2004) Extended Play
György Ligeti: Continum; Zehn STÜCK FÜR Bläserquintet; Artikulation
$9.65 In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental dynamos the Dirty Three. Low invited them in, and in the same collaborative spirit as another In the Fishtank session involving Tortoise and the Ex, this half-hour session is the document. What is truly amazing about this hookup is how natural these two bands sound playing with one another. Low has been striking out lately, playing different kinds of material while keeping its signature slower-than-slow approach to songwriting. The Dirty Three has taken a more melodic and dynamically restrained tack since their landmark Ocean Songs recording of a few years back. Of the six songs recorded here, none is more successful that the nearly ten-minute cover of Neil Young's "Down By the River." Mick Turner's trademark guitar style opens the work with lots of brush and cymbal work. It's unrecognizable for the first five minutes; it's just an opening shimmering drone with guitar strings wafting in and out of the atmospherics before Low's Mimi begins singing the verse and Alan teams with Turner to entwine guitars. And when Warren Ellis' violins slip into the middle of the stream, the eerie effect is complete, and the trancelike motion of the song takes hold and won't let go until silence takes over. The other five tracks are sensual Low originals full of longing and resplendent ...
| | John Adams Adams: Naïve & Sentimental Music / Salonen, Los Angeles Po CD (2002)
György Ligeti: Continum; Zehn STÜCK FÜR Bläserquintet; Artikulation
$14.29 This may be composer John Adams's most ambitious undertaking to date, one that moves him further out of the "minimalist" category. A massive, sprawling opus, it bombards the listener with a dizzying array of swirling melodies, chugging rhythms, vivid sonic colors, and lush orchestral textures. Yet for all its complexity, this three-movement work never overwhelms the ear. Adams makes the work emotionally compelling by creating a variety of moods that sometimes blend smoothly and at other times collide with a clamor.
Poignant melodies churn and percolate until they explode into raucous climaxes; jubilant fanfares crash into craggy dissonance; motifs that dance and spin as if out of control somehow resolve into peaceful reveries. It all makes ...
