| | Caetano Veloso Circulado Ao Vivo CD (1992)
Ligeti: Cello Concerto / San Francisco Polyphony
$11.19 This live recording captures Caetano Veloso during the New York leg of his Circuladô tour in 1992. Naturally, several of the tracks here are from Veloso's strong 1991 release, Circuladô. But the two main highlights of this CD are the absolutely stunning version of Bob Dylan's "Jokerman" and the equally superb version of Djavan's romantic hit "Oceano." On the latter, Veloso is backed solely by his own acoustic guitar, and the result is nothing else than sheer musical perfection and beauty. These two tracks alone make the album more than worthwhile, but there is a lot more to it -- for example the beautiful "Queixa," which gains a completely new and dramatic string introduction. Veloso also sings the pretty "Debaixo Dos Caracóis Dos Seus Cabelos," written by Erasmo Carlos and Roberto Carlos for Veloso during his exile in London, and "Mano a Mano," a nice tango by Argentine superstar Carlos Gardel. "Um Indio" gains a more robust and direct musical frame, and many people find this version even better than the classic album recording from 1977. "O Leaozinho," from the same 1977 album, does not come off very well, but without a doubt the real low point of this CD is the horrible electric guitar solo that concludes an otherwise nice "A Filha da Chiquita Bacana." Why Veloso permitted his guitarist to solo in this way is something of a mystery, but this misstep is also a very small detail toward the end of an otherwise very fine live album. ...

| | Donna Germano Harmonious CD (2001)
Ligeti: Cello Concerto / San Francisco Polyphony
$15.09 Gentle melodious numbers help this album live up to its name, Harmonious. From "Galley of Lorne" to "Minuet for Hammered Dulcimer," Donna Germano offers delicate and charming selections, exquisitely performed. Her version of "O Mio Babbino Caro" is one of the nicest ones available via MP3.com -- graceful, lovely, and touching. Truly, this one will have listeners reaching for repeat play. Germano's performance of "Canon in D" begins a bit understatedly, but as instruments join in it becomes more full toned and develops depth, concluding just as delightfully as the rest. In all, fans of both dulcimer and Celtic harp will welcome this addition to the genre, and listeners will certainly be staying alert for future releases from this talented performer, as well. ~ Murrday Fisher
Classical and Celtic music for harp and hammered dulcimer. All dulcimer music does not consist of jigs and reels. Donna creates beautiful sounds by combining her instruments with guest musicians playing flute, classical guitar and cello. Beautiful melodies.Donna studied both music and speech/language pathology at Cleveland State University where she received her masters degree in speech pathology. Music studies there included voice and classical guitar. Donna began her professional music career in the 1970's as a singer and guitarist. She performed in coffeehouses in the Cleveland, Ohio area. After moving to North Carolina for her work in speech pathology, Donna performed as a church musician for six years and began to learn to play the hammered dulcimer. She began by building an instrument from a kit and has since moved to professional dulcimers built by Lee Spears and Jerry Read Smith. Due to the fact that there is limited music written for hammered dulcimer, Donna began transcribing music from classical guitar and other instruments for the dulcimer. She has attended master classes in hammered dulcimer technique but has been primarily self taught on the instrument. Her interests are in the performance of both classical and Celtic music on the hammered dulcimer. The instruments she uses include 3 ½ and a 4 octave hammered dulcimers. In 1994, Donna began to study the Celtic harp and gradually moved to the classical pedal harp as well. This has included formal training with the pedal harp in order to develop the required technique and hand skills for this instrument. She plays a Celtic harp built by David Thormahlen and a Lyon and Healy pedal harp.Currently, Donna performs ...
