Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Director's Comments Actress Heather Langenkamp, who starred in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, now married with a son, is offered a new role in Wes Craven's newest "Nightmare." The film describes Freddy Krueger as an ancient evil, who must be barred between the walls of a story -- or else he will haunt reality. Since the story remains unfinished, Freddy's back and out for blood, especially Heather's. With her husband dead and her son hospitalized, she must brave the underworld to defeat the evil and, in doing so, bring the story to a close. Freddy's back, only this time he's not confined to dreams in this macabre film within a film. Heather Langenkamp, star of the original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, along with other actors and director Craven all appear as themselves. When Heather's husband is mysteriously killed her son begins to have disturbing nightmares, culminating in a bizarre encounter with the fictional boogeyman. As self-referential as Craven's SCREAM movies, but much more serious and creepy. Some scenes shot on location near the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The New Line Home Video release #4019 is a "Special Collector's Edition."

Wes Craven's New Nightmare Movie Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) A dissapointment Wes Craven wanted to create a darker Freddy and did this by taking away the humorous side of him and making him more dark and evil. He also didn't want this film to be associated with the Nightmares that came before this so he brought the series out of the movie and into real life. Robert Englund, Wes Craven, Robert Shay, Nancy and all the people involved with the Nightmare films were featured as actors. The plot was confusing but the acting was good. This wasn't even near as good as the first one and I think Wes Cravens mission to recreate Freedy was a failure. This film was the least successfull of the series. It really wasn't a good way too end the series. Dont buy it. Submitted by Joseph54 (New Jersey, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.

Original and innovative Wes Craven created a very original, intelligent and innovative film. He did this in a way to recreate Freddy and bring him into real life. Wes wasn't very happy with the Nightmares that came after his classic original and he thought the series was complicated and he didn't understand the plot that Racheal Talalay created in Nightmare 6. This gave him motive to create this New Nightmare film and bring back the original actors and actresses, such as Heather and her Father, who appeared in the first film. Wes Craven even appeared in this film, as well as Robert Shay (Director and Producer). Roger Ebert called this a horror film within a horror film, and that's exactly what it is. It is basically a parody of the Nightmares that came before it and stays on that fine line between fantasy and reality. It is a very very witty and intelligent horror film, sometimes even confusing because the film is taken out of the film and into real life sequences and it is hard for the audience to originally consume to that particular idea. The Nightmares that came before this one were just movies, according to this film.... I hope that makes sense! Some audiences didn't like that concept and I think that contributed to this film being a box-office failure; however it is a very big critical success, even though it was the least successful of the series. I think another negative of this film though is that Freddy Kruger had no humour or comedy about him. He was much darker and evil in this film and I think this also contributed to the box office failure of the film. He didn’t give out witty one liners as he did in the previous Nightmares. I think Wes could've given him more humour and more of a comedic look, instead of making him so serious and non-funny. Overall this film is a great film though. I advice this film highly for anybody who is a fan of Wes Craven. Although it doesn’t compare to the first Nightmare, or even his Scream trilogy, it is still worth watching.
