You Us And Them album
$6.99 In the spirit of South African nu-metallists Seether, who sound for all the world like U.S.-born and bred heavy rockers, comes Blindside, who are from, of all places, Sweden. Sure, Swedish garage-rockers like the Hives had already made themselves known, but who would have guessed that ...
| | Peter Tosh Wanted Dread Or Alive CD (1981) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
You Us And Them CD music
$8.85 Lou Marini, Jon Faddis, Lew Soloff (horns); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums); Iziah "Stick" Thompson, Noel "Scully" Sims (percussion);
Not many singers can sing "I am wanted by the evil forces" without sounding paranoid, but with Peter Tosh, you believe it. By 1982, Peter Tosh had been brutalized by the Jamaican police more than once. His chief crime was speaking out against the forces of oppression in his native land. As the wanted poster on the cover indicates, WANTED DREAD OR ALIVE finds Peter Tosh in a typically combative mode.
The record begins with both guns blazing on the menacing "Coming in Hot." The mood lets up on the uncharacteristically schmaltzy "Nothing But Love," a duet with soul diva Gwen Guthrie, and on the laid-back "Reggae-Mylitis," a sort of dreadlocked cousin of "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu." But in general, this is dark stuff indeed. He inveighs against the wickedness of Babylon on the chilling "Cold Blood" and the crisp, powerful title track. A rock-solid backing group, including the legendary rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, supplies sympathetic support to Tosh's gruff, impassioned vocals. On "That's ...
| | Burning Spear Social Living CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
You Us And Them music CDs
$12.65 If Bob Marley was the populist spokesman of the Rastafarianism movement, then Burning Spear (Winston Rodney) was clearly, through his music, the intellectual spin doctor. His albums are gentle history lessons in black culture; they tend to inform rather than preach. This is one of a number of excellent albums built around his theme of Marcus Garvey, the great leader of the Back To Africa movement. Spear is surrounded by the finest session musicians in Jamaica, in addition to Sly and Robbie. In assembling a record collection there are always a few token Marley records included. At least one Burning Spear album should be made compulsory.
Social Living, Burning Spear's sixth new studio album, first saw limited release under the title Marcus' Children in Jamaica in 1978. The retitled, resequenced, and remixed version heard here was released internationally on Island Records on July 11, 1980. The album represented a reversion by Winston Rodney, who, as of 1977's Dry & Heavy, was the sole member of Burning Spear, to the overtly political concerns of his masterpiece, 1975's Marcus Garvey. That meant ...

| | Sparks Indiscreet CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
You Us And Them CD music
$14.45 In the '70s and '80s, Sparks' American fans couldn't understand why the Mael Brothers weren't as big in the United States as they were in England. "Why don't more of our fellow Americans realize just how great these guys are?" was the question that Sparks addicts in the U.S. often found themselves asking. Whatever the reason, British audiences really connected with Sparks' goofy, insanely clever lyrics -- and the fact that Russell Mael sings like he could be an eccentric upper-class Englishman (although he was born and raised in Los Angeles) probably didn't hurt. Indiscreet, which was the Mael Brothers' third album for Island ...
