Two-step heaven? Well, close to it; if the sound of a fiddle and a button accordion gets your blood racing then you owe it to yourself to let the Cajun Playboys come into your life. While there's nothing blatantly ground-breaking going on here, the Playboys do sneak a little bit of country and early rock & roll flavor into their arrangements. It's not overt, but it's there, more in the way they attack their instruments than in anything else. It's that subtle deviation from the norm that sets this group slightly apart from its peers.
Still, if you're looking for a good, solid Cajun music starter set you won't go wrong with this. It's a nicely varied program of originals and standards, with flavorful versions of two country classics, Hank Williams "Jambalaya" and Moon Mullican's "Jolie Blon" that at this point probably qualify for Honorary Cajun status.

This is more great stuff from the "Legends Of Specialty" series. Drummer and vocalist Roy Milton was one of the first artists signed to Juke Box Records, the label that became Specialty, and his "R.M. Blues" was a factor in getting the label capitalized. The Solid Senders came about, in part, because of the growing economic unfeasibility of the big bands. The streamlining that followed had a dramatic and interesting effect, first highlighting simpler, punchier, and more direct arrangements over a firm rhythmic backing, and then by the directions it led -- listening to the 1947 "Milton's Boogie" is an instant education in the roots of rock and roll. The powerhouse piano riffs and short solos from Camille Howard will be nothing unusual if you've heard many of the primary white rock and roll records (and a few of the black ones, too.)

This blues-oriented set has the feel of a jam session. Bassist Willie Kent and Lil Ed Williams split the vocals on a date that features contrasting guitar voices in the relatively clean Eddie C. Campbell and the more distorted playing of Williams; both have plenty of solo space.
