Akira Kurosawa's Academy Award winning production is a testament to the value of friendship and the indomitability of the human spirit. An old hunter is hired as a guide by a party of Russian soldiers on a surveying expedition through Siberia. His thorough knowledge of the land and his mystical ability to communicate with nature saves the soldiers from certain death. Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's adaptation of novelist Vladimir Arsenyev's novel about survival, set against the stark wilderness of Siberia. When Mongol guide, Dersu, is hired by a Russian crew of mapping surveyors, they soon realize their original negative opinion of him as an inexperienced, naive eccentric, is woefully inaccurate, when they must rely on his bravery and courage to get them out of difficulty. A "man of the woods" saves the members of a Russian surveying expedition by teaching them how to cope with nature. Years later, a member of the team meets up with him again, and tries to convince him to come and live in the city. Academy awards: Best Foreign Language Film. Shot in widescreen (Sovscope).
The Criterion Collection laserdisc was transferred from a 35mm anamorphic color reversal internegative in the Cinemascope aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Both the English and Russian soundtracks were created from separate 35mm optical soundtrack negatives. The intermittent film scratch on the left side of the screen is inherent in the source materials, which were the best available elements.

Dersu Uzala Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Friendship and Respect This movie is based on a true story. What Dersu Uzala shows us, seems to be in the beginning funny or ridiculess but in end effect, he gives us a great vision and experience about nature, friendship, love and respect to the nature and to other human beings. I really recommend this movie. Submitted by a reviewer (Rueggisberb, BE(rne), Switzerland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A must see for some. Quiet, paced, touching film. Stunning scenery. A very different kind of 'buddy' film. Reminiscent of Lawrence of Arabia. Submitted by a reviewer (San Francisco, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One, if not the best, of the best films ever. I am a huge Kurosawa fan and I thought I'd seen his best work before this film. I was wrong. Never has such high quality filmmaking been married to such a beautiful and touching story for me.
Its the lovely story of two men who love each other as human beings despite their differences. Dersu Uzala is a masterpiece of the human emotion. It just doesn't get any better than this. Submitted by hawkmankt (Kansas City, MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
