Black & White; Colorized; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles In his stunning documentary, Australian photographer, filmmaker, and adventurer Frank Hurley captures the astonishing true story of Sir Ernest Shackelton's ill-fated two-year Antarctic expedition aboard the ship, the Endurance. In July 1914, Shackleton and his twenty-eight-man crew (including Hurley) sailed from England for Antarctica, hoping to be the first explorers to cross the continent. However, eighty miles from land, the Endurance became locked in impenetrable pack ice. For the next nine months, the crew desperately tried to cut "leads," and batter through to open water. Hurley's glorious images show the ghostly Endurance landlocked in unremitting white ice, as far as the eye can see. In August of 1915, the crew and their seventy sleigh dogs were forced to abandon the Endurance as the pressure of the ice began crushing the ship. The crew was able to row to Elephant Island, where twenty-two remained, while Shackelton and five others attempted the desperate eight hundred mile voyage to inhabited South Georgia Island. Miraculously, all of the men survived the two-year ordeal, and Hurley was able to save 150 of his 400 glass plate negatives and all of his film reels to provide this dazzling documentation of the Endurance's harrowing experience. Filmed on location in the Weddell Sea, Elephant Island, and South Georgia Island, Antarctica.
The British Film Institute's National Film and Television Archive restored the film in the late 1990s.
Shackelton hoped to partially finance the Endurance expedition through advance sales of Hurley's photograph and film rights.
Hurley returned to South Georgia Island in the winter of 1916 to finish the film, since he had remained on Elephant Island with the majority of the crew while Shackelton and five other men made the dangerous trip.
First Officer Lionel Greenstreet called Hurley "a warrior with his camera," due to Hurley's risky actions like carrying his heavy camera equipment high into the ship's rigging to get a shot, and diving into the freezing water to rescue his negatives and film reels from the sinking ship.
In 1933 a sound version called ENDURANCE: THE STORY OF A GLORIOUS FAILURE was released, which included a voiceover by the ship's captain, Frank Worsley. South: Shackleton & The Endurance Reviews: "...Perhaps the century's greatest survival story..."

Journey to the Antarctica The dvd was well put together and the photos were well taken and showed much of what they had to endured just to stay alive all that time, not knowing if they would get back home again. The fact that everyone got out safety was amazing. We are planing a trip to the Antarctica in January of 2004 and it will be helpful while planning the trip. The Most Authentic Movie Ever Made This movie is a rare find. Filmed while attempting to reach the Antarctic on the ship Endurance, it was the endurance of the crew, the smiles and laughter one could see despite hard work and harrowing conditions, that drew me to this movie. The ship held dozens of dogs; the men found solace and joy in taking care of them while pushing through desolate waters. Footage of the ship acting as an ice breaker is tense but great. The real adventure started when the ship went down, though, and they were nowhere near land. The beautiful photography caught amazing numbers of animals along the way and birds captured on film that are now extinct. An exciting, suspenseful film which is more so because there are no actors, only real people, real joy, real suffering, and a true conclusion. South: Shackleton & The Endurance DVD South is the extraordinary chronicle of one of history's greatest epics of courage and leadership. In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton embarked on an expedition to cross Antarctica via the South Pole. Before it could reach shore, the explorer's ship, Endurance, was trapped in an ice pack, held frozen in a sea of icebergs for eight months and finally crushed. After five months adrift on ice floes, the crew embarked on a perilous sea voyage to rocky, windswept Elephant Island. From there, Shackleton led five of his men on a miraculous 850-mile journey across unimaginably dangerous seas in a small open boat to get help from a whaling station in South Georgia. The explorer made three failed rescue attempts for the rest of the crew before finally succeeding--nearly two years after first setting sail. Frank Hurley, a veteran cinematographer and member of the Endurance crew, shot this beautiful and moving film as their incredible adventure unfolded.
