92 minute feature film DVD. The greatest surf movie ever m ade. Made in 1964. Mike Hynson and Robert August were among the world's best surfers in the mid-1960s. Bruce Brown was a surfing enthusiast with a few largely unseen films on the sport. The three became legendary when Brown followed the two Californians around the world, filming their quest for the perfect wave in THE ENDLESS SUMMER. Brown captured his subjects hanging ten in their home waters as well as in Hawaii, Australia, Tahiti, Africa, and New Zealand.
While the surfing footage is amazing, what truly sets this study of the sport apart from its brethren is the larger questions posed in the athletes' search. As they move from ocean to ocean, Hynson and August seek deeper meaning in their lives and come to a spiritual understanding of their purpose on the waves. The thoughtful protagonists also challenge the stereotype of the brain-dead surfer dude. The laid-back guitar sounds of the Sandals, along with Bruce Brown's own wry narration, provide a relaxed soundtrack for this landmark film. It was followed almost 30 years later by ENDLESS SUMMER II (1994), featuring a new generation of surfers. Theatrical release: 1966
THE ENDLESS SUMMER was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2002.
Bruce Brown's trip following his surfing subjects lasted approximately three months.
Despite the extensive traveling, the film was made for approximately $50,000.
Nearly nine miles of 16mm film were originally shot.
Before the final cut was blown up to 35mm, the film was screened at West Coast surfing venues with Bruce Brown providing live narration.
Bruce Brown's previous surfing films used light jazz scores. Upon hearing guitar band the Sandals, he asked them to provide the soundtrack. The "Theme from Endless Summer" is one of the cinema's most identifiable instrumentals.
This is the only Mike Hynson video. With the Surf Craze heating up this is a Must Have!!!! As a an armchair surfer I loved being taken around the world, and dipped in warm water with the gentle, humorous narrative of Bruce Brown. Seeing the surfers in suits and ties on the airport tarmack is just a small dose of the "blast from the past" this DVD provides. As with Bruce Brown's "On Any Sunday" about the world of Motorcycles in 1971, "The Endless Summer" is rarely out of our DVD player! Submitted by a reviewer (Keyport, WA) Was This Review Helpful? $9.85 BIG WEDNESDAY follows the lives of Matt (Jan-Michael Vincent), Jack (William Katt), and Leroy (Gary Busey), three young Californians who live to surf. Together, the boys ride the waves, throw beach parties, and, of course, get into scrapes. However, as the years go by, the trio must contend with the escalating war in Vietnam and embark on the painful road to maturity.
Although director and screenwriter John Milius usually dwells in a macho world of action, his meditation on the waning of youthful dreams, partially based on his own childhood, is surprisingly heartfelt. While the film depicts the close friendship shared by Matt, Jack, and Leroy, it also does justice to their favorite pastime with stunningly photographed surfing sequences. Widely considered to be one of the best surfer movies of all time, BIG WEDNESDAY pinpoints a specific era with pitch-perfect skill and nostalgia.

Endless Summer film
$10.15 With STEP INTO LIQUID, Dana Brown emerges from his legendary father's shadow and adds another classic film to the surf documentary canon. Son of hugely influential filmmaker Bruce Brown (THE ENDLESS SUMMER, ON ANY SUNDAY), Dana's debut as a writer/director is a gorgeously photographed tribute to surfing and the individuals who love it. Journeying all across to the world to show just how universally praised a sport--and lifestyle--surfing is, Brown uses his natural enthusiasm and humor to great effect, narrating the film with an infectious, breezy optimism. He presents a wide range of surfers, from superstars (Kelly Slater, Laird Hamilton, Keala Kennelly) to amateurs, including an old man who hasn't missed a day of surfing in over 25 years. The locations include such unknown surf spots as Wisconsin, Texas, and even Ireland, to the more widely regarded waters of Hawaii, California, and Australia. Brown wisely saves the best for last, as a group of incredibly bold surfers journey out to sea to test out their skills on 60-foot-plus waves. But what makes STEP INTO LIQUID such a vital experience is its overall positive energy. This is a film that doesn't just celebrate surfing; it celebrates life.

| | Eddie And The Cruisers DVD (1983) Widescreen
Endless Summer review
$9.79 Back in the early 1960s, Eddie and the Cruisers, a (fictitious) rock band, was the hottest act around. However, in 1964 the group broke up, following the apparent suicide of the band's charismatic lead singer Eddie Wilson, who drove off a bridge. His body was never found.
After 20 years, TV reporter Maggie Foley decides to do an investigative story on the band. At the same time, she searches for the missing tapes of the group's last recording, which could provide clues to Eddie's disappearance. The more Maggie researches her story, however, the more she suspects that Eddie Wilson may still be alive...
A reporter searches for a vanished 1960's rock star who ran his car off a pier years earlier.

$7.95 With superb investigative skills heightened by uncanny natural instincts, Iliana Scott (Angelina Jolie) is not a typical FBI profiler. This beautiful, no-nonsense Special Agent is a cut above the rest, which is why her old friend Captain Le Claire (Tcheky Karyo) calls her to assist his detectives in Montreal when a brutalized body is discovered in a construction site. A murder the next night provides proof of a serial killer, but this time, there is a witness. Artist James Costa (Ethan Hawke) not only saw the murder, but also tried to save the victim, and is even able to provide a sketch of the killer. The plot only thickens as ultra-dedicated Scott, along with ornery, territorial Detective Paquette (Olivier Martinez) and good-natured Detective Duval (Jean-Hughes Anglade), continue their investigation, linking together numerous similar murders over the years and arriving at a disturbing conclusion. To complicate matters even more, Scott is drawn to their charming key witness, Costa, and finds herself in uncomfortable territory as she fights her romantic impulses in an effort to remain professional. Director D.J. Caruso's (THE SALTON SEA) second feature also stars Keifer Sutherland and Gena Rowlands, and was filmed on location in Canada.

Endless Summer review
$17.05 Targeted by dishonest airline owners out to collect insurance money on a plane, drunken former pilot Butch is blackmailed into piloting a passenger flight; the dirty dealers threaten harm on Butch's adopted son, Tony, if he does not agree to fly. Flying high over ocean waters, the rigged plane's engines fail, and although Butch's expertise guides them to safety, the survivors find themselves marooned on a jungle island where the adventure has only just begun.
Their flight has been delayed and the handful of passengers waiting to depart are plenty annoyed. Little do they know that the delay is caused by the "negotiations" between the slimy airline owner and a reluctant drunken, retired pilot named Butch. Butch is being forced to take over the flight, rigged to crash, so the insurance policy on the aircraft can be cashed in. The pilot would prefer, however, to stay grounded with the little boy who has become his companion, Tony. With Tony's life threatened if he doesn't fly, Butch gives in and accepts the flight. When both engines fail mid-flight over the ocean, it is Butch's expertise that lands the craft safely on a remote island.
