Starring Pierre Magnier
Director Augusto Genina
114 minute feature film DVD.

This silent version of Edmond Rostand's classic play "Cyrano de Bergerac" was the first cinematic adaptation of the tale. The eloquent, deeply poetic Cyrano de Bergerac adores his lovely cousin Roxanne, but fears that his ugliness will prevent her from ever returning his feelings. So he uses the handsome but inarticulate Christian as a conduit for his emotions, pouring his heart out in letters signed with Christian's name. Wooed by the beauty of the words, Roxanne falls in love with the man she believes wrote the missives -- never realizing that is Cyrano whose voice has aroused her passion.

This silent French version of Edmond Rostand's passionate story of unrequited love is presented in "Pathecolor," a process of tinting, hand-painting and stenciling that gives the film a unique, impressionistic beauty.

Shot in Pathécolor, a forgotten art in which each frame of the film was colored through a variety of techniques, including: tinting, toning, hand-painting and stenciling. Produced by the Unione Cinematographica Italia. The video was digitally remastered from an archive print and features an orchestral score by Carlo Moser, copyright 1996. Intertitles are in English and French.

5 stars Very Well Done
I love silent movies, but even I have to admit that most of them have a lot of "over-acting." However this movie is one of the best silents I have seen yet. The acting was great, the photography and coloring excellent, and the movie had me in tears by the time it was over. I highly recommend this movie, especially if you're a silent movie lover like myself.

Cyrano De Bergerac DVD Features

The most beloved of all love stories! Edmond Rostand's play "Cyrano de Bergerac" was a triumph from the moment of its premiere on December 28, 1897. It has become the most popular play of the modern French theater, and Cyrano, despite an ugly visage dominated by an enormous nose, has become a world-beloved symbol of generosity, magnanimity of spirit and beauty of soul. In adapting "Cyrano de Bergerac" to the silent cinema, director Augusto Genina and scenarist Mario Camerini retained the beloved poetic language of Rostand's original work. The grandeur of costume, setting and action is captured not only in impressive staging and sensitive performances but also through the filmmakers' bold decision to present almost the entire work in the highly stylized and beautiful Pathe Stencil Color process. Three years were devoted to the by-hand coloring of "Cyrano de Bergerac," so that this 1922 film was not fully released until the Fall of 1925! With this beautiful release, this rarely-seen silent classic can take its place with the all-time greats!

Fritz Lang (METROPOLIS, M, THE BIG HEAT) creates an allegory of love, death and faith in this elaborate tale of a woman's quest to test fate. Realizing that her husband has been taken away by Death--literally, dragged out by an old cloaked man symbolizing the end of life--a young woman tries in desperation to bring him back. After a vision of lost souls marching into Death's property, the woman faints and is taken to the herbalist's house, where in despair, she takes a vial of poison. As the woman faces Death, he presents her with three flickering lights, which represent three lives about to end. Death tells her he is tired of his duties and dislikes seeing so much human suffering, but that no one has the power to defeat him. If she can save any of the three lives represented by the candles ...

Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera. Director Fernando Meirelles combines visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of three decades of unrest in underground ...

This fictionalized biopic chronicles the final years of opera meta-diva Maria Callas (Fanny Ardant), filling in the blank spots with a "what if" scenario. It's the late 1970s and Callas, once the greatest singer in opera, has lost her voice, been thrown over by Aristotle Onassis in favor of Jackie Kennedy, and now stomps around her apartment in a haze of pills and regret. But just when it seems all hope is lost, her former manager Larry (Jeremy Irons) hits on the plan to do an opera film of CARMEN, with Callas lip-synching her younger voice in the lead, thus preserving her stage presence for future generations. The trouble is that once Callas gets back in the limelight, her over-the-top artistic temperament threatens to destroy the entire project. What's more, Larry's gay lover (Jay Rodan) is throwing tantrums of his own. Fanny Ardant is incredible as the tortured, egotistical diva and Joan Plowright lends some welcome warmth and wit as the British reporter who sets the plot in motion. As with many a Zeffirelli film, the cast is packed with beautiful people and the photography is elegant. The passages from CARMEN are a real highlight, with Callas's actual recordings used on the soundtrack. An opera director as well as a film director, Zeffirelli was friends with Callas ...

Filmmaker and leftist activist Michael Moore asks some serious questions as he probes the depths of America's trigger-happy gun culture in the insightful and amusing documentary, BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE. Guns in America are used to kill an average of more than 11,000 people per year. This death toll is obscenely out of balance with other first world countries, which generally average a total in double digits. Experts and analysts have pointed to America's bloody history as a reason, but how does that explain the lower murder rate in Germany? Violent entertainment has also been fingered, but how does this account for staggeringly low numbers in Japan, home of the most violent entertainment video games on the market. Moore's trademark comedic tone is razor-sharp as his quest leads him everywhere from Littleton Colorado's Columbine High School to the home of NRA President Charlton Heston. Moore, oddly enough a lifetime NRA member, makes his ...
