PSYCHO is the horror film that spawned a thousand imitations, not to mention three sequels. A busty blonde pockets $40,000 in stolen cash following a tryst with her divorced lover. Afterward, she heads up to a remote rural motel run by psychotic mama's boy Norman Bates. The stage is now set for a classic tale of terror and depravity that includes a cross-dressing murderer, stuffed corpses, the ultimate Oedipal conflict, and, of course, the most notorious shower scene ever filmed. Based on the novel by Robert Bloch, PSYCHO is generally considered the progenitor of the horror genre--and an unmitigated masterpiece.

Credited with inventing the genre of the modern horror film, PSYCHO has had its share of sequels and imitators, none of which diminishes the achievement of this shocking and complex horror thriller. Alfred Hitchcock's choreography of elements in PSYCHO is considered so perfect it inspired a shot-by-shot remake by Gus Van Zant in 1998. However, Hitchcock's black-and-white original, featuring Anthony Perkins's haunting characterization of lonely motel keeper Norman Bates, has never been equaled. Bates presides over an out-of-the-way motel under the domineering specter of his mother. The young, well-intentioned Bates is introduced to the audience when Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a blonde on the run with stolen money, checks in for the night. But Momma doesn't like loose women, so the stage is set for this classic tale of horror--and one of the most famous scenes in film history. PSYCHO was initially received by audiences with shock and amazement--and it still terrifies today. Though it is now considered prototypical Hitchcock, its setting, pace, and emphasis on terror were major departures for the director at the time, coming after the more classically grand NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

Hitchcock cameo: Hitchcock can be seen through the window in Janet Leigh's office, wearing a cowboy hat. PSYCHO is number 18 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies. PSYCHO was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1992. PSYCHO was followed by PSYCHO II (1983), directed by Richard Franklin; PSYCHO III (1986), directed by Anthony Perkins; and PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINNING (1990), directed by Mick Garris. Gus Van Zant directed a shot-by-shot remake of PSYCHO in 1998. Hitchcock insisted that no one be allowed to enter the theater after the film had started. Joseph Stefano was the winner of the 1960 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Screenplay. Filmed on an approximate budget of $800,000. PSYCHO was the first Hollywood film to show an image of a toilet flushing. In its original release, which was before the MPAA, the film had no rating; it was rated M (for Mature Audiences) by the MPAA for a 1968 reissue, then rerated R in 1984.

Psycho Quotes/Excerpts:

"Mrs. Bates? Mrs. Bates?"--Lila Crane (Vera Miles), looking for Norman's (Anthony Perkins) mother

Psycho Reviews:

"Hitchcock's only out-and-out horror flick -- and possibly the most important ever made." -- Jamie Graham, Total Film

5 stars out of 5 -- "It's such an essential film -- remaining fresh, shocking, perversely funny and tragic..."-- Kim Newman, Empire

"[N]early 50 years after its release in 1960, the 45-second shower scene in PSYCHO is still terrifying and paralyzing."-- Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

5 stars Truly a classic
This has got to be Alfred Hitchcock's greatest picture ever made. This is not only the greatest movie in the horror genre, I consider it the greatest movie of all time. All of the veteran actors did an incredible job and Anthony Perkins played Norman Bates better than anybody could. The shower killing scene is one of the greatest scenes in movie history and has been impersonated and copied in other feature films so much over the years. This is truly a suspensfull film and broke alot of bars back in 1960. There was so much controversy surrounding this film but it turned out to be a huge box office hit and is still talked about today. It was the first ever feature film to show a tiolet flushing and show a women being murdered naked in the shower. The film also being shot in black and white gave it even more of a suspensfull feeling to it. Any fan of great acting and classic films, this dvd is definately for you.

5 stars Greatest Horror movie ever
This is without a doubt Alfred Hitchcock's greatest creation. I don't think anybody really knows just how classic this film really is. It broke so many barriers in film history, such as showing a toilet flushing and the classic killing shower scene. This movie was made nearly 50 years ago and it's still considered as the greatest horror movie in history. I don't think anybody would've been able to play Norman Bates like Anthony Perkins. He did such a great job and that's why the movie was so successfull. This movie will never be outdone by any other thriller or horror film. This film stands alone.

3 stars Greatest Film Ever Made With Greatest Male Actor of the said
No Actor can ever have played the part of Norman Bates other than the greatest Anthony Perkins. He died too young in 1992. There will never be another anthony Perkins. There will never be another Psycho. Except for the fact Anthony Perkins starred in Psycho II and Psycho III and his last in 1990 Psycho IV. I loved this actor, his acting and all his films. I really miss him greatly.

The third installment in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series. In a medical facility, seven teenagers who have constant nightmares about child murderer Freddy Krueger undergo monitoring for sleep disorders. But nothing that anyone does seems to help them -- until Nancy Thompson, the heroine of the first movie, joins the medical staff. She suggests that they try a new drug, which inhibits dreaming, on the youngsters. The gullible doctor-in-charge opposes this treatment, forcing Nancy to fight both him and a suspicious nurse in order to save the teens. When Heather's husband is mysteriously killed her son begins to have disturbing nightmares, culminating in a bizarre encounter with the fictional boogeyman. It is caravan time in Dolpo, high in the Himalayas of Nepal. The villagers must trek for days across the mountains with laden yaks to trade their salt for grain. But when Karma (Gurgon Kyap) returns to the village with the body of Lhakpa, leader of the caravan and son of the old chief Tinle (Thinlen Lhondup), the new chief blames Karma for the death, and will not allow him to lead in Lhakpa's place. Though Tinle's grandson, Tserin (Karma Wangiel), is far too young to lead the tribe, Tinle simply renames him Passang--a chief's name--and prepares him to lead the caravan. Karma challenges Tinle, threatening to take away the yaks, Lhakpa's widow Pema (Lhapka Tsamchoe), and Passang before the day that the caravan begins. Old Tinle in turn visits the monastery to gather his son, Norbou (Karma Tenzing Nyima Lama), a frescoe-painting monk, to join him on the caravan. But Norbou refuses to join his father, and Tinle returns to the village to discover that Karma has left early, taking most of the caravaneers with him. Tinle, Pema, Passang, the late-arriving Norbou, and the old men of the village leave on the scheduled day, and leading their own caravan in an effort to end the rivalry that threatens every resident of Dolpo. DVD $22.15  3 stars
Based on the success of their popular MTV reality-based shows, producers Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray decided to take their formula to the multiplex. The result is THE REAL CANCUN, a raucous 90-minute descent into the debauchery that is Spring Break. After an intense audition process, 16 people were chosen to fly to Cancun for a weeklong, all-expenses-paid vacation. It isn't long before the partiers are drinking the days--and nights--away. There's David and Heidi, lifelong friends who have never acted on their obvious attraction for one another; Sky and Paul, who flirt with each other at every waking moment; Nicole and Roxanne, twins who can't seem to find the right guy; Jeremy and Laura, who form a quick bond that is destroyed when Jeremy's head gets in the way; Casey, a model who can't control his raging libido; and then there is Alan. An innocent 19-year-old who has never had a drop of alcohol in his life, Alan is determined to remain sober. Yeah, right. As the tequila continues to flow at an ungodly pace, the revelers flirt, hook up, break up, and search for another conquest. Parents, teachers, authority figures, intellectuals, beware. Everyone else, get ready to be entertained. This is exploitation at its most fascinating.

Fight Club/Kiss Of The Dragon

DVD $19.85  5 stars
FIGHT CLUB: FIGHT CLUB is narrated by a lonely, unfulfilled young man (Edward Norton) who finds his only comfort in feigning terminal illness and attending disease support groups. Hopping from group to group, he encounters another pretender, or "tourist," the morose Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), who immediately gets under his skin. However, while returning from a business trip, he meets a more intriguing character--the subversive Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). They become fast friends, bonding over a mutual disgust for corporate consumer-culture hypocrisy. Eventually, the two start Fight Club, which convenes in a bar basement where angry men get to vent their frustrations in brutal, bare-knuckle bouts. Fight Club soon becomes the men's only real priority, and when the club starts a cross-country expansion, things start getting really crazy. Like Tyler Durden himself, director David Fincher's FIGHT CLUB, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is startlingly aggressive and gleefully mischievous as it skewers the superficiality of American pop culture. Outstanding performances by Norton and Pitt are supported by a razor-sharp script and an arsenal of stunning visual effects that include computer animation and sleight-of-hand editing. One of the most unique films of the late 20th century, FIGHT CLUB is a pitch-black comedy of striking intensity. KISS OF THE DRAGON: The writers of THE FIFTH ELEMENT, Luc Besson (who also directed the Bruce Willis film) and Robert Mark Kamen, have teamed up again to deliver Jet Li in the action thriller KISS OF THE DRAGON. Li stars as Liu Jiuan, a Chinese agent so dedicated to his job that he has no friends, no family, no dreams. He is sent to Paris to help the French police capture a Chinese gangster, but France's top cop, Jean-Pierre Richard (Tcheky Karyo), has set Liu up to take the fall for a brutal killing he himself carried out. On the run in a strange city, Liu keeps a low profile until he unwillingly becomes friends with an American hooker, Jessica (Bridget Fonda)--who just happens to hold the key to his innocence. But Richard is always one step ahead of them--he has Jessica's daughter. Li and Fonda make a great team; their relationship is at the core of the film, as neither character has ever been able to put complete trust in another person before. The action scenes, directed by Corey Yuen, are fast and furious and very violent, featuring mesmerizing moves by Li, especially one involving a billiard ball. Chris Nahon, in his directorial debut, makes excellent use of the location, including numerous shots of famous Parisian landmarks as the bad cops try to machine-gun down Liu in the streets and sewers and on the Seine.
