DVD. Feature film. Stars Gregory Peck. CC. 130 min. Robert Mulligan's classic adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, set in the racially charged atmosphere of Macon County, Alabama in the 1930s, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a poignant coming-of-age story. Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Screenplay (written by Horton Foote), and Best Actor (Gregory Peck), TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a timeless film packed with beautiful scenes and meaningful life lessons. The story is told from the vantage point of a young girl nicknamed Scout (Mary Badham) whose widowed white father Atticus Finch (Peck), an attorney, decides on principle to defend a black man (Brock Peters) charged with raping a poor white woman. But the bigoted townspeople would rather lynch the accused than try him, and they make life hellish for the lawyer, his daughter, and his son Jem (Philip Alford). While their father is in the throes of the trial, his bright, inquisitive children learn a hard and unforgettable lesson in justice, morality, and prejudice, part of which requires overcoming an unfounded fear of their mysterious neighbor Boo Radley (Robert Duvall). Theatrical Release: December 25, 1962.
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1995.
According to author Harper Lee, the character of "Dill" was patterned after Truman Capote, a childhood friend.
This marked the screen acting debut for Robert Duvall as the mysterious Boo Radley.
The DVD includes a documentary about the making of the film, as well as extensive commentary from director Robert Mulligan and producer Alan J. Pakula. No, No, No! No speeding car chases! No major gun battles! No nude scenes! All this movie has is a great story and great performances. Peck is great, sooo natural. He's not afraid to work with those amazing kids. This ranks right up there at the top of 'the list'. Submitted by a reviewer (Minnesota) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Good movie Being that this is presented in B&W, I didn't know this until after I got it. But after watching it, the B&W affect goes along with the "spookiness" of the neighbor Boo. Submitted by a reviewer (Dallas, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Superb Film In this stunning film from the Pulitzer Prize winning book by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) defends Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black man accused of raping a white girl. Set in Alabama, at the time of the Depression, little Scout who is narrating the story is growing up and trying to understand the confusing views of adults. Throughout the film we are reminded of the constant problem of prejudice and this is one of the hardest things Scout and her slightly older brother Jem have to deal with.
Although it is a main theme in the film, the court scene and the trial of Tom is not the only story, or example of prejudice: another important part is set around Boo Radley and the mystery that surrounds him and his house. Throughout the film, a picture is built up of Boo – a man who only comes out at night, who kills and eats people’s cats and other pets. Everyone in the little town of Maycomb, including Jem and Scout, is terrified of him, although it seems that no-one has ever seen him; the stories are just rumours that have circulated and been elaborated on as they went. Right near the end of the film, when the climax of the court scene has died down, and the film seems to be coming gently to a close, Jem and Scout are coming home from a pageant organised as some sort of entertainment for adults and children alike on Halloween. Walking through an area of patchy woodland, the children are surprised and shocked by the realisation that someone else is walking just behind them, keeping just out of sight. After a dramatic incident, we finally get to meet the real Boo – is he the monster that has been built up before our eyes through the film?
The court scene is a climax in the film and much time is spent in the 1930s court room with Peck pacing up and down, revealing the truth from the witnesses to jury and audience alike; even if they can’t accept the truth in the end. Gregory Peck won an Oscar for his performance as Atticus; a well deserved reward for some excellent acting. He holds himself as the lawyer he is in all parts of his life and treats many things as one would do in court. Especially when dealing with Jem and Scout, a notable example him acting like this is right at the beginning of the film when Jem refuses to come down from a tree. Scout thinks that she has to do what he says because he’s not going to come down and she respects him. Atticus just tells her to ‘leave him and he’ll come down.’ He realises that Jem only wants attention so in leaving him, Jem isn’t getting the attention he wants. As well as being this almost hard lawyer, Atticus is also a very good father for his children, and he need to be for their mother is dead. He reads with and to Scout and plays a limited amount of football with Jem, and he gets them to understand that ‘you don’t really understand a person until you climb inside their skin and walk around in it.’ -A motto which can be applied to nearly every part of the film from Boo Radley to Tom Robinson to Mayella Ewell.
In conclusion, it is a fantastic film by Robert Mulligan and it is a shame that he didn’t do many other films like it. Some people might say that at times it is a little over-sentimentalised but I disagree; the balance has been got just right between soppiness and being completely unemotional. It fully deserves the four Academy Awards it got for it. A must-see film.

$13.59 VERTIGO is Alfred Hitchcock's haunting tale of deception, madness, and death--a masterful exploration of fantasy and anxiety. The film ranks with REAR WINDOW as one of the director's most closely studied films for its psychological complexity, while the obsession of its protagonist--John "Scottie" Ferguson (James Stewart)--can also be seen to parallel that of Hitchcock's own fascination with the icy-blonde leading lady he re-created at the ...

$13.59 Credited with inventing the genre of the modern horror film, PSYCHO has had its share of sequels and imitators, none of which diminishes the achievement of this shocking and complex horror thriller. Alfred Hitchcock's choreography of elements in PSYCHO is considered so perfect it inspired a shot-by-shot remake by Gus Van Zant in 1998. However, Hitchcock's black-and-white original, featuring Anthony Perkins's haunting characterization of lonely ...

AMERICAN GRAFFITI presents a powerful collage of youth on the brink of maturity just before the assassination of J.F.K.. Based on George Lucas's own teenage hot-rodding days in Modesto, California, this brilliant, bittersweet comedy inspired numerous other productions, including the long-running TV series HAPPY DAYS. Lucas's second feature film (following THX 1138), AMERICAN GRAFFITI contains an early screen appearance by Harrison Ford, who would figure heavily in the director's next movie, the sci-fi epic STAR WARS. The film follows one night in the lives ...

$10.55 Sidney Lumet's directorial debut is a snapshot of the American judicial system in action. Twelve average New York males convene in a very small jury room on a very hot day in order to reach a verdict in a murder trial. Almost everyone wants to vote guilty and get on with their lives except for Juror No. 8 (Henry Fonda), a conscientious citizen who insists on establishing reasonable doubt. Arguments are made, cigarettes are smoked, murder weapons examined, diagrams drawn, and prejudices revealed. Firm opinions weaken and reverse; voices get raised, the clock ticks, ...

$9.69 John Ford's memorable screen version of John Steinbeck's epic novel of the Great Depression--often regarded as the director's best film--stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. $9.79 Martin Lawrence stars in this action comedy directed by Dennis Dugan (HAPPY GILMORE). The film concerns an unlikely partnership that forms between two L.A.P.D. rejects. Hank (Steve Zahn) is a straightlaced L.A.P.D. officer who is fired after supposedly brutalizing an innocent black man. It turns out the "victim," Earl Montgomery (Lawrence), is actually just an angry citizen who is allergic to bee stings. To Kill A Mockingbird film
$13.55 While it might sound outlandish to speak of THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS in the same sentence as CITIZEN KANE, in its own little neck of the cinematic woods the Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen comedy is perhaps just as groundbreaking. In fact, it's nearly impossible to think of another film that blends so seamlessly pitch-perfect stoner babble with high-octane action sequences.
Dale Denton (Rogen), a process server with a weed fixation, witnesses a murder and turns to his dealer, Saul (James Franco), for support. The murderer is actually Saul's main drug supplier, and because of Saul's access to some extremely rare high-grade pot (called Pineapple Express) the two are quickly tracked down and put on the run. Like all Apatow/Rogen vehicles, the movie deals with the theme of men succumbing to adulthood and all the adjustments they are forced to make in the process. However, unlike KNOCKED UP and THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is just too wacky to offer any lessons. Still, there's more going on here than giggles and the munchies. Indie director David Gordon Green (SNOW ANGELS) brings a subtle auteur's ...
