Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Behind The Scenes This modern fantasy stars Anthony Hopkins as William Parrish, a wealthy New York City media mogul who suffers a heart attack on the eve of his 65th birthday; although he survives, he senses that his death is near. On the same day, Parrish's younger daughter, Susan (Claire Forlani), meets a handsome young stranger (Brad Pitt) at a neighboring coffee shop and is instantly smitten. As they part, the young stranger is killed and his body is occupied by Death, who is coming to Earth to warn Parrish that his death is, indeed, imminent. Death enters the Parrish household disguised as Joe Black, the handsome stranger, and although Parrish understands Death's intentions he lets the family believe that Joe Black is a young business associate. Susan is shocked to find the familiar young man at her family dinner that evening, and, as she begins a passionate love affair with the debonaire stranger, she has no idea that she has fallen not for the young stranger from the coffee shop but for Death himself. In an effort to prolong his life and his daughter's happiness, William agrees to take Joe on a tour of human life that includes board meetings, family parties, and, ultimately, romance. As long as Joe falls in love, Parrish remains alive. This version was inspired by the Alberto Casella play DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY and the subsequent 1934 film. Theatrical release: November 13, 1988. Dance with Death: My Expectations for Meet Joe Black I saw this movie for the first time when our teacher showed it in government/economics class. One of my friends had just died of cancer and our teacher deemed it appropriate.
I must say, it is now one of my all time favorites.
The plot is about a rich old man, (played by Anthony Hopkins) and his meeting with the Angel of Death (also known as "Joe Black" and played by Brad Pitt.) They reach an agreement that Death should take a holiday, and with the help of a human host, investigate planet Earth. (This movie is a remake of the old black and white film Death Takes A Holiday.)
The dialogue in this movie is rich, and the score by Thomas Newman (so romantic!) is now one of my all time favorites as well. CD Universe has a good price for this one and it's well worth the greenbacks to buy it new. So if you don't own this already...what are you waiting for? GO GET IT! Thought provoking What an amazing, underrated movie this is. For a person interested in the way that people interact with one another and why, this is a real pearl. It covers the different kinds of love, reminds us of the real pleasure of some of the simple, taken for granted 'stuff' in life and, of course, the superb acting and original story line don't do it any harm either. And the music is fabulous. Submitted by upanzau (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

$10.29 This thriller is a heady, suspenseful brew that mixes dark comedy with scare tactics, resulting in a tense buildup and a complexity that belies the apparent simplicity of the plot. Ray Wise plays Frank Harrington, the sharp-witted patriarch of a family that's having difficulties getting along during the holiday season. Driving to Christmas dinner at the in-laws, his passengers include his wife, his psych-student daughter, her unhinged boyfriend Brad, and her teenaged, gothed-out brother.
