Additional Footage; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Academy Awards; Director's Comments; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Behind The Scenes Jonathan Mostow's (BREAKDOWN) World War II submarine thriller about a crew of inexperienced American mariners forced to pilot a disabled German U-boat through hostile waters delivers plenty of action while paying homage to such war genre greats as DAS BOOT and DESTINATION TOKYO. Matthew McConaughey (EDTV) leads the rag tag American crew as Lt. Andrew Tyler, a young officer determined to prove himself a capable leader after being denied command of his own ship. His fellow seamen include Jon Bon Jovi (MOONLIGHT AND VALENTINO), Bill Paxton (A SIMPLE PLAN) and a cross-section of American society, featuring a hot-headed Brooklyner, an earnest farm boy, a wise black cook, a pack of fresh-faced young sailors, and Harvey Keitel as a salty old sea dog. Working with a lean plot, Mostow employs Oliver Wood's (FACE/OFF) detailed, claustrophobic cinematography and an exceptional sound design to create a series of engaging and genuinely tense action sequences that take the rickety submarine to crushing depths in order to outrun German attacks. While his attention to hard historical facts may be a bit leaky, Mostow's ability to sustain suspense rewards viewers with a tight genre piece with no shortage of action or good old American patriotism. Faithful to the conventions of the World War II genre, Mostow's (BREAKDOWN) submarine thriller pays earnest homage to the pluck and determination of ordinary people forced to overcome extraordinary odds. The mostly young and inexperienced crew of the S-33 is deployed on a top secret, high-priority mission to intercept a disabled German u-boat (the titular U-571) and capture the ship's encryption system--the Enigma--in order to crack the Nazi's communication codes and hasten an allied victory in the North Atlantic. Racing against a German rescue effort, the S-33 stages a daring raid on the U-571. But after capturing the U-571, the Americans find themselves its prisoner as they must pilot the leaky, disabled vessel through hostile enemy waters. McConaughey (EDTV, DAZED AND CONFUSED) leads a strong cast (Keitel - HOLY SMOKE, Paxton - A SIMPLE PLAN) in this fast-paced, tense, submarine adventure. Theatrical Release: April 21, 2000.
The water scenes for U-571 were filmed in St. Paul's Bay, Malta.

U-571 Reviews: "...[A] smooth white-knuckler....It's a simple pleasure to watch..."-- Michael Atkinson, Movieline's Hollywood Life "...A rousing, old-fashioned submarine adventure....Just the right blend of adventure, action and gritty realism to keep audiences riveted throughout....A smart, slick crowd-pleaser..."
-- Wade Major, Box Office "...[The film] gets high marks for tension and excitement. The action sequences are bracing and involving..."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "In the cramped quarters of the submarine you can realistically identify with the high temperatures and sweat on the faces of the stressed crew."

U-571 Movie Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) why U-571 is the best movie about the battle of the Atlantic Personally i think that "U-571" is the best movie ever made about the battle of the Atlantic of WWII. it has so much emotion and feeling. All of the actors of this movie did exceptionally well in filming and acting out the lives of men that actually had to go out and do these things in the heat of battle. When you watch this movie you think "how could these boys get up and do this every day?". I think that this movie portrays a perfect image of what actually happened in the Battle of the Atlantic. Congratulations to all of the Directors, Composers , cast and crew on doing such a wonderful job of making my and many other's favorite movie of all time! Thank you! Das Boot Lite This is an ok film, but most of what is seen has been done before, particularly in the far more gripping Das Boot. You clearly see that you are always on a movie set and the actors are all so-so. On the plus side, the director did do everything that he could to make the film historically accurate. Insult to veterans & historians There is good reason why movies like this are destined to the forgotten video bargin bins while movies like 'Das Boot' remain timeless classics. It's very sad that some people will actually think this movie has any truth behind it. If they are going make a movie with so much fiction, they should have made it more obvious to a less intelligent audience. For example: use laser death ray guns, cloaking devices, teleporters, etc. To anyone with any knowledge of U-boats, WWII, or science, this movie is insulting and extremely painful to watch. $10.49 John Woo raises the action bar in this violent, romantic sequel to Brian De Palma's 1996 original. Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, this time battling wits with rogue IMF agent Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott). Hunt is ordered to recruit Ambrose's former lover, Nyah Hall (Thandie Newton), to infiltrate his hideout. But Hunt never expected to fall for the lovely young thief he must use for bait. The romantic triangle that ensues gives the film a unique emotional balance that is unusual (and most welcome) for an action picture. Ambrose is after the killer Chimera virus and its antidote, Bellerophon; in the old days Ambrose would have been after world domination, but ...

$9.29 AMERICAN BEAUTY tells the story of Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), a suburban father who snaps when he becomes disgusted with his stale, repetitive existence. Burnham lets us know in voice-over from the film's opening that this is the day he dies (using the SUNSET BOULEVARD flashback approach), a technique that adds an inevitable tension to the proceedings and keeps the story moving forward at all times. On a whim, Lester quits his job and begins a regression into young adulthood, lifting weights, smoking pot, doing nothing, and discovering the ...
