This is a keeper My wife and I really enjoy this version of Pirates of Penzance. By jjh112 (Erie, PA USA)
A Classic Linda Ronstadt and Kevin Kline together make a movie that you will want to watch over and over. Angela Lansbury is an added bonus. Great musical - of the old Hollywood style. By alibenchr (Texas)
Pirates of Penzance steals the show. This is a funny musical that stays true to the cheesiness of Gilbert and Sullivan. I could do without Rex Smith's pop singing. I'm sure he could have sung it much better, but it sounded like he was trying too much to be a pop/rock star. That's my only complaint here. Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt are great. Of course the incomparable Angela Lansbury is a great Ruth. My favorites are the patter songs. It's remarkable that people can sing that fast. However, I can only recommend it for people who *really* like musicals, because they sing almost every 5 minutes. By a reviewer (Fayetteville, NC)
Pirate King meets the Keystone cops! A refreshing take on an old classic which drags G+S into the 21st Century. Well cast; a mix of well known faces and a few unknowns (at least this side of the pond). Kevin Kline excells as the Pirate King; Linda Ronstadt is in good voice, as is Angela Landsbury. Tony Azito steals the show with his double jointed and rubbery antics as leader of his chorus of "Keystone Cops" - the highlights of the show for me are the scenes set around "When The Foreman Bears His Steel" and , of course "The Pirates Chorus" which is particularly athletic, and "high-kicking"! Altogether a rollicking good show. By Esther (Glasgow, UK)
| Great Movie!!! I love this version of P of P! I was very disapointed with the DVD version that was filmed on stage. I was too distracted with the poor sound quality and photography to really enjoy the film. This version is more like a movie, but still has the feeling of a play. Better photograhy and sound. And in a musical, good sound is important. In reference to the other review, I think that Rex Smith's pop singing helpes add to the humor of the play. Its one more thing to make fun of in this movie. Besides, he only does that in one song. I love this movie and this is my favorite version. The more I watch it, the funnier it gets and, the more funny stuff you see going on in the background. This movie is only for thoes who LOVE musicals. Lets just put it this way: Linda Ronstad, who is a main character, only has 3 spoken lines. The rest is all music. I highly recomend this movie. Enjoy!
