Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Soundtrack Spanish; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Behind The Scenes Steven Spielberg directed this powerful film depicting the real-life events that followed the 1839 insurrection aboard the slave ship Amistad. Desperate prisoner Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) leads his fellow prisoners in a bloody revolt on the ship and demands to be returned to Africa. When the slaves are recaptured and imprisoned in New England, lawyer Roger Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey) is hired to represent the Africans and their desire to return home. With the help of John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins), Cinque and Baldwin try their historical case in front of the Supreme Court. Based on actual events in 1838, AMISTAD is the story of captured African slaves who took over their transport ship in a bloody revolt with the hopes of returning back to their homeland. After the slaves are caught and imprisoned, their leader, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou), unable to understand the language or court system of America, tries to communicate his desire to return home to his defense lawyer, Roger Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), and former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman). The men plead for help with their groundbreaking court case from former president John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins). Steven Spielberg directed this moving film, using as a reference the book by William A. Owens, BLACK MUTINY: THE REVOLT ON THE SCHOONER AMISTAD. The Africans in the movie speak Mende, with subtitles added. West African actor Djimon Hounsou had to learn to speak the language for his role--and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Spielberg shot the film at the State House in Providence, Rhode Island, the seaport in Mystic, Connecticut, and other New England locations. Theatrical release: December 4, 1997.
The film was shot on location in Newport and Providence, Rhode Island; Boston, Massachusetts; Mystic, Connecticut; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Amistad Reviews: "...Sheer power, moral and otherwise. It possesses a massively majestic hero..." -- 3 out of 4 stars
-- Susan Wloszczyna, USA Today "...It has excellent cinematography....Djimon Hounsou gives the film a strong visual focus as he radiates extraordinary presence and fury..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...A monumentally impressive achievement and further proof of Spielberg's ongoing maturation as an artist..."

Amistad Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Powerfully emotional and compelling work of art! The struggle for dignity and equality is powerfully told. Cinque's journey is one to be admired and empathized with by everyone. If this does not move you, nothing will. A few good men fight the evil of a system (slavery) for other men in a world they do not understand, but through faith, they preservere in a world that is just as unforgiving. Brilliantly touching. One of my altime favorites Adam's speech at the end of the movie was amazing. The fact that he is humble, yet such a hardass just gave me the goosebumps! It was amazing. Submitted by Lauren (Sarasota, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Spielbergian Misstep Everything that Spielberg got right in _Schindler's List_, he gets wrong here: the director's didactic presence is too strongly felt; the actors' love their dialogue, rather than what it means; and we are allowed to feel the screen time too frequently. The only one who escapes without a scratch is the DP, Janusz Kaminski. Fortunately, Spielberg regained his senses for _Saving Private Ryan_ and, as a 'historical' filmmaker, left his sentimentality out of the picture. $10.49 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera ...

$10.55 Don Cheadle gives a riveting performance as Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of a European-owned hotel in Rwanda, who created a secret refugee camp for the Tutsi people during the brutal genocide committed against them by the Hutu people in 1994. His efforts helped to save 1200 lives out of close to a million who were killed. HOTEL RWANDA shows this man's courage, while also capturing the political events that occurred between April and September '94. First, United Nations soldiers are restricted from fighting back against Hutu guerillas, even after the Rwandan president is assassinated and the country is thrown into chaos. But as the fighting worsens, all non-Rwandans including UN peacekeepers, Europeans, and Americans are evacuated. This leaves the Tutsi people defenseless against aggressive Hutus who are armed with machine guns and machetes. While working the system with strategic phone calls to powerful international contacts ...

Matsumoto (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is in love with Sawako (Miho Kanno), but he chooses to marry his boss's daughter instead so he can get ahead in the world. After Sawako attempts suicide and loses her mind, Matsumoto chooses to do his penance by giving up everything to take care of her, leading her through the streets and parks tied to him with a red cord so she can't get away and hurt herself.
