Snailhouse is the bedroom pop project of Mike Feuerstack of the Wooden Stars. In the grand tradition of b-pop, he plays all the instruments himself. He also wrote all the songs and sings them in an aching, innocent voice that will remind listeners of Elliott Smith, a relaxed Will Oldham, or even the male equivalent of his bandmate Julie Doiron. Fine is Snailhouse's first album, recorded in 1995 and reissued in 2000 by Grand Theft Autumn. The 14 tracks are mostly acoustic (guitars and voice) ballads and all are unremittingly intimate and earnest. Feuerstack spills his heart into his songs but does it in a restrained fashion that avoids any charges of twee navel-gazing. Instead songs like the spare "Radio" or the piano-led "What Are Your Coordinates?" sound like small truths doled out with melody and kindness. Records this tiny are the remedy for anyone who feels poisoned by showy singer/songwriters or pop buffoons. Of course anyone who likes his truths with a bit more flash and pomp may find the record to be a touch too samey and overlong. But again, if you like small and true then Snailhouse's Fine is for you. ~ Tim Sendra

| | Epica Design Your Universe CD (2009)
Fine music CDs
$13.15 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral ...

| | Katatonia Night Is The New Day CD (2009)
Fine CD music
$14.04 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has moved in an increasingly melodic direction, even covering ...
| | Solas Words That Remain CD (1998)
Fine music CDs
$14.45 The third album from the dynamic contemporary Celtic-folk band Solas is very consistent stylistically with their first two efforts, peppering traditional Irish folk songs, jigs, and reels with less conventional instrumentation. But if The Words That Remain sticks closely to the formula that brought immediate success to Solas and Sunny Spells and Scattered Showers, it also features a more eclectic song selection that demonstrates the flexibility of the band's distinctive sound. In addition to the expected Irish folk tunes (e.g., "I Am a Maid That Sleeps in Love" and "A Chomaraigh Aoibhinn O") there are brisk and energetic covers of Woodie Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty" and Peggy Seeger's acerbic activist ballad "Song of Choice." These songs invert the band's most significant accomplishment: having first invigorated Celtic music by adding elements of American folk and bluegrass, Solas has apparently turned to invigorating American folk by adding Celtic flair. As always, the production is slick and seamless, employing a seemingly bottomless bag of musical tricks that keep the proceedings lively and unpredictable throughout. The record also features impressive guest contributions by Canadian banjo master Bela Fleck and vocalist Iris de Ment. The Words That Remain does nothing ...
| | Dumptruck Lemmings Travel To The Sea CDs (2001)
Fine songs
$13.25 Disc 1 of LEMMINGS TRAVEL TO THE CD is comprised of new studio material. Disc 2 is a live CD of unreleased material, recorded at CBGBs in 1986.
Expanding their guitar roots and moving into the Americana sphere, Dumptruck, led by songwriter and vocalist Seth Tiven, has shaped a contemporary roots rock record nearly 20 years after forming. Having relocated from Boston to Austin, shades of off-center drawl and a loose spin on Americana drives tracks like "Curse" and the guitar screamers "Waste My Time," "Security," and "Faithless" return to the old school of Green on Red and Dream Syndicate. The package includes a bonus CD filled with live material from 1986 and 1988 (the Dumptruck heyday) displaying the band's impeccable taste and foresight in covers: Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" and "Idiot Wind," Neil Young's ...
| | Jason Darling Night Like My Head CD (2003)
Fine album
$12.05 Although it starts off innocuously with a folksy/strummy guitar, Jason Darling's second album, Night Like My Head, then shifts into more experimental waters. Homebrewed synths and drum machines soon dominate songs like "Angels Down," giving a sort of spacy, futuristic take on the singer/songwriter territory he stakes out. But things really take a strange turn with the rapping that dominates "Lost Desert Motel." It's Beck-like in a "Loser" way, especially when Darling adds bluesy acoustic slide guitar, but it's also unique and hypnotic. Possibly too eclectic for his own good, Darling adds enough of his own voice to these songs to create a diverse but intriguing portrait of his influences. With his delicate everyman, talk/singing voice he writes tunes that twist and shake in soft yet ...
