Ronald Shannon Jackson's free funk group in 1986 featured quite a bit of talent, most notably Eric Person (alto and soprano) and Zane Massey (tenor and soprano) along with two guitarists, bassist John Moody and Jackson's drums. This obscure LP, recorded live at the Caravan of Dreams, has plenty of intense outbursts and fiery solos, showing that it is possible to play creative funk. ~ Scott Yanow

When Colors Play album
$15.15 More rock than Little Feat, but with a similar Southern boogie feel and absolute top-notch musicianship. [sentence fragment okay with Muze?] Al Kooper produced this record, which explains the sensitive use of strings and piano. Although tracks such as "I Ain't The One," "Simple Man," and "Tuesday's Gone" are outstanding, the one to wait for is "Free Bird," a song that rivals "Stairway To Heaven" for hard rock credibility. The nine-minute epic starts with organ and slide and builds in a similar way, but at 4:44 it changes into fifth gear and the air guitars are out in force.

| | Ronald Shannon Jackson Live At Greenwich House CD (2000)
When Colors Play CD music
$14.49 Recorded live at the Greenwich House, New York, New York on January 1, 1986. Includes liner notes by Ronald Shannon Jackson.
This gig took place in 1986, almost two years after Vernon Reid and Melvin Gibbs left the Decoding Society. For whatever reason, they returned for this New Year's Day gig at the Greenwich House. The standing band had moved deeply into its African rhythms phase by this time, and most of its members had been playing together for over a year. They had recently added Henry Scott on trumpet, making Eric Person's job as saxophonist a little easier. Here is the largest Decoding Society ever assembled. Two guitars, two basses (acoustic and electric), and horns, along with Jackson, make up the band of seven. The set smokes, though the producers get no points for the live mix -- it's thin and ...
| | Children On The Corner Rebirth CD (2003)
When Colors Play music CDs
$12.95 Even more come across the time-worn paths of ether and obscurity: Children on the Corner is a collective made up of ex-Miles Davis sidemen from his eclectic years that include Sonny Fortune, Michael Henderson, Badal Roy, Ndugu Chancler, and Barry Finnerty. The band is led by keyboardist and composer Michael Wolff, the only non-Davis personnel. Rebirth was recorded live over two nights at the popular Oakland, CA, nightspot Yoshi's. The program is a set of tunes from Davis, as well as some group and Wolff originals. The album kicks off with one of the most inspiring readings of Josef Zawinul's "Directions." For over 21 minutes, Fortune and Wolff explore the outer reaches of Davis' loose harmonic universe. The small vamps ...

When Colors Play CD music
$15.09 On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor ...

| | A M Band Eight Hit Wonders! CD (2005)
When Colors Play songs
$14.79 THE A.M. BAND has been causing people to do a "double-take" in the tri-state area since early 2000. Originally formed as an extention of singer/guitarist Bryan Gordon's solo act that contained dozens of songs by early 70's "One Hit Wonders". Believing that there was an audience just waiting to hear the songs "people love to forget" again, Gordon enlisted the services of bassist Matt Kaprelian and drummer Stuart Stahr (and more recently drummer Brett Roberts), all well seasoned veteran's of the NY/Connecticut club and studio scene. Together they decided that the new band would perform Top 20 AM Radio Hits from 1968-75 exclusively, partly to avoid being labeled a "Disco Band", but also because they felt it was an era of great songs, but with a terrible reputation (it didn't hurt either that no other bands in their area were doing that kind of music!). After settling on the the type of music they would perform, it was decided that in order for people to appreciate what the band was doing, they would have get people to stay around long enough to listen (don't forget at the time heavy "alternative" music was the norm). This would not be an easy task if a Metallica, Creed or Chili Pepper's fan walked in on the band in the middle of "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head". ...
