| | Ronald Shannon Jackson Puttin' On Dog CD Ronald Shannon Jackson Discography of CDs
Originally issued under the title Pulse, this is more or less a solo Ronald Shannon Jackson record. Poet Michael Harper appears unaccompanied on "Those Winter Sundays" and with Jackson on "Bessie's Last Dance," the latter a rare success in the poetry-and-music category that has something in common with clarinetist Don Byron's later collaborations with spoken word artist Sadiq. Meanwhile, guest Onaje Allan Gumbs takes care of "Lullaby for the Mothers," an uncharacteristically sentimental solo piano piece that borders on new age territory. The rest of the album is all Jackson, though. The most interesting tracks are the ones where he sings (in the same rough, weathered, bluesy style as his occasional vocals in Last Exit) or speaks along with his drumming. He does the latter on "Raven," the album's 11-minute centerpiece, groaning out a surreal mix of wordless noises and quotes from Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe in tandem with his explosive drum rolls and fills; Jackson really seems to be out in his own world here. Elsewhere, there are several more straight-ahead solo drum tracks that, while being as well played as one would expect, aren't as engaging as "Raven," the New Orleans-flavored "Puttin' on the Dog" (sic), or "Slim in Atlanta." Due to its inconsistent nature, Puttin' on Dog is probably better left to established Jackson fans, but its unusual highpoints do make it worth hearing. ~ William York

$11.99 COMPACT SNAP!, a collection of the Jam's singles, is an abridged version of the 2-LP set SNAP!, released on Polydor in 1983. The LPs included eight additional songs: "Away From The Numbers", "Billy Hunt", "English Rose", "Mr. Clean", "The Butterfly Collector", "Thick As Thieves", "Man In The Corner Shop" and "Tales From The Riverbank."
Includes an excerpt from Paolo Hewitt's biography of the Jam, "A Beat Concerto."
THE VERY BEST OF THE JAM brings together 21 favorites from seminal punk trio The Jam.
The Jam started out as a punk band and ended up as a soul band, one of the more eclectic and rewarding journeys found in the rock pantheon this side of The Clash. However, because certain elements remained constant--Paul Weller's stunning lyrics, the energetic rhythm section, the healthy, try-anything attitude--the quality never diminished, it only transformed. COMPACT SNAP! travels the distance from the desperate punk of "In The City" to the equally desperate soul of "Beat Surrender," touching on most of the great ...

$18.99 At a wayside inn located in the Colony of New York in 1775, a night-long farewell party sets the stage for a swirl of political intrigue and romantic folly resulting in treasonous plots and a potentially deadly conspiracy. A new and completely original story for the musical stage, "Fair Liberty's Call" is based on surprising glimpses into the true history of the Revolutionary War era. It deals with the conflicting emotions that faced Americans in those politically-charged times and, especially, with the fervent hope of many African-Americans that a general emancipation would come to America's slaves as a result of freedom ...

$11.49 JUTA TAKAHASHI was born in Miyagi, Japan in 1959, and then spent his childhood to teens in Aomori. At his teens, he was strongly influenced by so-called progressive rock and synthesizer music that had been assumed to be avant-garde at that time. He went to Tokyo for going on to school, and his career as a musician started afterwards. Though he originally was a guitarist and played rock music like King Crimson's that valued improvisation, he gradually devoted himself to electronic music. He now resides in Sendai, Miyagi and is producing music by using synthesizers and computers as an independent musician. He received the major impact from electronic/ambient musicians, such as ...
